TSN: Brendan Shanahan named President of Toronto Maple Leafs

Please take Deboer. For the love of all things holy. Enjoy being the Toronto Grinders for 3 years all while getting zero development from your prospects and having Debo play veterans far too much. Oh and enjoy CBGB. Your new fourth line.

You need a coach that utilizes your skill not Debo who thinks every line is a checking line.

Shanahan wants DeBoer? Things are looking up...

Aaron Ward is reporting (or suggesting) it.

@MapleLeafsHS suggesting only that's a name in the event of a coaching change. He's unsigned and his deal is up in NJ.

Just a bit more info that it may not be 100%.

You want goals in bunches and no defence? How about getting outshot by 20 shots in a single period and close to 40 shots on average a game? How about utilizing a 4th line center for 20 minutes a game and in the offensive zone with a last change and fresh legs? How about a coach that is mystified as to how to fix the deficiencies of his own team and system?

We can trade you Carlyle.

DeBoer isn't perfect but at least we'll finally see what is hopefully the look of a respectable 2-way hockey team that can ****ing defend a lead.

So Carlyle taking the fall? didn't see that coming :help:

GM now reports to a guy with no management experience , makes sense

Never thought this would happen now. I thought for sure it would happen just after the playoffs. Interesting.

Like most have said, it's hard to be excited for this. We'll see I guess.

It was a certainty that they would bring in a President, I had assumed it would be Nicholson.

Why is it hard to be excited for this? Seems like a great move to me.

You understand what this is right? You know about PR and making a positive image for the franchise right? You know that Shanahan has zero experience as a GM right?

That and Tim putting a little more distance between himself and the hockey operation. After all his bravado about the Leafs since his hiring, he probably had an "oh crap" moment recently and wants a little more insulation.

Because this team's issues are for deeper then needing another executive guy sitting on his butt trying to find answers.

I'm not saying it won't help but with the crap we have witnessed over the last 3 years, on top of this disarray of crap on the ice, bringing onboard someone that has zero experience in a front office is hard for me to be excited about.

Whatever floats your boat though.

Also, I knew they would bring in a president, but I thought it would be after the playoffs. Shanahan still had a job and a duty to do and the playoffs are a busy time for suspensions.

it never even seems like these guys are interviewed before they're hired. and now Shanahan "wants DeBoer"? how about interviewing some candidates and asking them about how they would go about turning this stinking mess of a franchise around? maybe get some details beyond changing the culture, some evidence that they're fit for the job beyond their status as HOCKEY GUYS.

I dont care for this move much.
Shanny has no experience in the field of running a team or ties to the franchise.

Its a name to appease the fans.

Another management type. How many do they need? Too many chefs in the kitchen, unless they plan to replace Nonis with Shanny ultimately. :sarcasm:

If you've made bad investments it always makes sense to invest more in those investments to keep your job otherwise you'd have to admit you were wrong and probably be fired

Already pot committed on Nonis and Clarkson I guess so might as well build with them. Then in five years they'll be gone and we'll all still be here saying the same things.

2nd team in GTA!

Well if I read your post accurately we are at that franchise "make it or break it call".

RC had been saying since the start of the season "this is not the way to win, if you want sustained success"

Do we have the player skill, will, egos, coachability to play that kind of hockey?

I say ,not even remotely close.

So do we "bend" the coach to serve these players or "bend the players(roster changes)" to make this work?

Steve Spott, our Marlies head coach, used to be Deboer's assistant coach for the Kitchener Rangers when they won the Memorial cup.

Have to agree with this. We've seen it far too often over the last 10 years... bring in a new coach / GM, and then be forced to rebuild around them. I'm not saying Carlyle is the right coach for this group, but I'm pretty sure DeBoer isn't. Yes, guys like Bolland & Clarkson may succeed under him, likely Lupul & Bozak as well. On Defence, Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Franson & Gleason will certainly succeed... but these aren't the guys we should be building around. Guys like Kessel, JvR, Gardiner & Rielly should be our future.

To me, Laviolette is the guy to bring in with this roster. He knows how to coach a true two-way game.

Deboer in his first year at Florida brought a bad Panthers team within a tie breaker of making the playoffs with 94 points.

He brought a mediocre Devils team to the Stanley Cup final 2 years ago.

He's a very capable coach.

Not the most exciting teams, but the teams are well coached, and play a back pressure, more defensive style.

After years of run and scramble, I am ready for more structured hockey.

I look fwd to Kessel with 60 points and more winning. I am ready for Kadri with 40 points but making the playoffs.

Winning > Style points

Deboer with Spott, a natural fit. But then again I also like Willie Desjardin.

I'd give it a shot. I can't remember the last time we had a structured defensive system.

yea the tsn guys just said shanahan has to come in and assess the situation before making a decision. carlyle and nonis still not safe.

also, tsn insiders > sportsnet's wannabe insiders

"Sportsnet's wannabe insiders" were the ones that broke this story.

Kypreos was first to mention Shanahan's name on Wednesday and Cox broke the news of the deal being done.

I can already feel Shannys impact: Leafs climb up the draft ranking and the Prospects thread and the Marlies thread are re-unified, I expect more good things to come every day now!

Two way hockey? You think you would score goals under Deboer???

To be fair, I think the Leafs have a lot more talent up front than the Devils. Unless they're all shipped out to get Deboer type of players. (Just like how Carlyle wanted Carlyle type of players  )
