Never thought this would happen now. I thought for sure it would happen just after the playoffs. Interesting.

Like most have said, it's hard to be excited for this. We'll see I guess.

I dont care for this move much.
Shanny has no experience in the field of running a team or ties to the franchise.

Its a name to appease the fans.

Well the thing is Shanny is a winner, he's a hockey great and he's a smart guy. I don't care if he has ties to the team or not, I do believe this signing is a good one on the management side of things.

I just hope people don't expect him to come in and make things instantly better, what he does bring is a lot of experience in knowing what it takes to win, the respect of being a ex-nhl great who is still a big part of hockey operations.

At the end of the day I personally believe this is a good move, expect the next big move in the firing of Randy Carlyle to follow after the last leaf game of the season.

The problem is the wrong hockey executives. Claude Loiselle should probably be fired. He's our cap management guy, but we're always slightly overpaying players to stay here while other teams work out discounts. Might as well be handing out blank checks.

Absolutely, supposed to manage the cap and has obliterated it irreparably

That Clarkson signing was all on Nonis.

I can't believe the story I read where Nonis expected us to take a step back. Not only did he sign Clarkson to the worst contract anyone can imagine, but he also tried to recruit Scuderi, traded a valuable pick for Bolland as well.

Why would a team make all those detrimental moves when they expected to bad?

I'm absolutely baffled and have lost a lot of confidence in Nonis.

Nonis should be fired for the Clarkson debacle alone- he got played hard.

Nonis is a smart man, he is an experienced hockey exec. I think this may work.

Shanny is a smart man, as with any smart hockey man, he will surround himself with good hockey people.

A Shanny/Nonis tandem can work. Shanny will have his vision, Nonis will have imput but he will have to execute the vision.

I don't see Nonis staying if he is simply a yes man. Neeley/Chiarelli work this way, Burke and Nonis did also, Nonis was basically the GM when Burke was here. Dryden/Quinn.

I think there will be other shoes to fall, but not Nonis. Carlyle, Belza, some of the front office will probably change over.

Shanny coming in can only be a positive for this organization. Good move by Leiweke.

its not a tandem .....who's kidding who burkes footprints are all over this club still...truth be told ,bernier trade was likley lweike's pushing with maybe a little advice from ron hextall ,just confirming bernier could stil play .:sarcasm:.....shanny is boss ,nonis works for shanny ,if he doesnt like it ,he can quit and go somewhere else ,...happens in real life to all of us

Dreger "names that are circulating around Shanahan are Martin Lapointe, Kris Draper and Pete De Boer as a coach"

You understand what this is right? You know about PR and making a positive image for the franchise right? You know that Shanahan has zero experience as a GM right?

Jesus... can those candidates be more in the left field?

Plenty of names with better resumes that are up for grabs for the coaching position, unless of course the first 2 are simply names for executive roles.

Well we know DeBoer loves Clarkson, but he probably loves Clarkson a little too much.

I want John Stevens.

Dreger didn't post that.

A Troll did.

That's a fine name but I wasn't a fan of him when he was in Philly though. Payne is also a popular name to be coach next year, whose also an assitant coach with the Kings.

Then there's Boucher and Desjardins. There are a few other interesting names as well.

I just don't want an Adam Oates hiring. Way too green for the Toronto market and a team that desperately needs someone that can take over the room with leadership and that can whip this team into something semi-respectability.

Should clarify, Lapointe and Draper wouldn't be coach candidates, they'd be brought into front office. De Boer is coach option

I missed that. Draper and Lapointe in the front office would be fine people to have. At least the younger players would have some players that played with heart around the arena to look up to...

look over here SQUIRELS

the timing of all this could not be more perfect right MLSE Pravda.

Im ok with De Boer as a coach candidate (also like Stevens). Lapointe and Draper however have fairly thin resumes, but as long as its for support roles in the front office, i wouldnt mind. Id just be pretty wary if one of them was made GM.

Im down with cleaning house. I want to see everybody on the same page, Marlies and Leafs playing the same or at least very similar systems, and coaches/front office all involved in pushing for that same system/types of players. Not to mention a fresh set of faces in the front office means they have zero ties to the roster, which puts everything on the table without pride getting involved.

It should only be the start to what should be a change in the MLSE front office, coaching staff and hopefully in the player structure.

The timing is definitely perfect for MLSE but at least change is starting to happen all ready.

Team sucks but hey, we have a president now. We think you're going to remember him...

I heard they hired a new janitor to clean the dressing rooms too.

DeBoer would be a solid candidate for coach. He's had history with Kadri and he might actually get something out of Clarkson.

oh I get your point dave but

I'm old jaded and cynical when it comes to the leafs.

The timing of this reeks of slick hucksterism. I don't truth folks that need to try and pull off that kind of greasy nonsense.

The hiring might be based on honest ,genuine strategy but the timing of the announcement surely is not.

TL better wake up and realise this kind of LA slikster crap don't work out here (see the timing of Dion's inking as another example".

Seems like he can't stick with a team or very long though. Isn't that something to be a little worried about?

He's coached some horrible look rosters though and still had some decent success.

I see what you're saying and I agree. The timing is definitely there to get the fans a bit more optimistic about next season and also not get too rowdy for heads to roll, both at the management level and the player level.
