Player Discussion Brendan Gallagher: all heart, no hands

  • Xenforo Cloud upgraded our forum to XenForo version 2.3.4. This update has created styling issues to our current templates, this is just a temporary look. We will continue to work on clearing up these issues for the next few days and restore the site to it's more familiar look, but please report any other issues you may experience so we can look into. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
really thought he was on his way out of the league 3 years ago. good for him for still bringing it and overcoming so many injuries. doesn't look as slow as he has in years past and still plays the same game that's made him successful.

He has 1 point in his last 10 games. Had a decent start of the year but he's back at being washed up Gally.

I've taken flak for suggesting Gallagher should not be on the first line. His line went flat so we bump him up great. Nine points and a team worst +/-
He should never see top six period.

I'm really glad MSL put him and Pearson on the 4th line. I hope they stay there - except to take Armia's spot if he gets in a funk.

Ylonen and Slaf were playing with more assertion and conviction with the puck. They both wanted the puck on their stick and they wanted to do something with it.

Well I'm glad you see it that way. While I don't mind his game when he is engaged he is slow and unable to be effective on a forecheck. Newhook would get in as the first man and force the play but Gallagher would get there too late and the puck is already gone. He is not quick enough to be a top six player in this league. I think he is half a step faster but that isn't enough.

definitely not a top 6 player and isn't worth his salary but i was convinced he was completely done. and with how much he sacrificed his body for this organization and the fact that the team isn't in a position to compete, i'm happy he's on the team.

He's done. Might have a short burst here and there. Play over his head for few games but Gallagher basically done. He's in his 30s had a ton of injuries. It's too much for a player to overcome

I hope his contract will be buy out before the end of it. 6,5 millions for that kind of player is one of the reason why the team is at the bottom. With the cap era right now, each contract needs to be a good one to make playoff

Gallagher still gives it all, and bless him for that. He's showing the young ones the correct mindset to be a winner. However, I think the game has left him behind. When Newhook comes back, Gallagher would be the player to sit in my opinion. Not sure how HuGo will deal with the last three years of that contract, but that's the most important move of the summer.

Next year (without any major Playstation moves):
Slaf-Suzuki-Caufield
Newhook-Dach-Armia
Monahan-Evans-Anderson
Heineman-Dvorak-Ylonen
Pezz

Gallagher has been a true warrior this year. I'm so happy to have him on this team. He is a great role model but more importantly has been healping his lines create scoring chances and extend O-zone time. His contract sucks, but if he can keep playing like this I want him on the team. Just my opinion.

His effort and heart are appreciated.

The diminishing skill set is very hard to watch.

Obviously but I think he still has a positive impact on his lines. Does anyone know what the advanced stats say? I'm not great at reading those...

-14 on the team (worst by far). He looks good because of the effort, but he is a liability.

He’s the best in on-ice expected goal differential this year on the team, at 53%. It’s below the 57-60% range he got us used to, but still good.

That being said we should have 10 goals more when he’s on the ice (21 expected vs 11 actual) so he and/or his linemates have not produced as much as they should have. It’s a bit expected for Gallagher who is not a great finisher but not to that extent.

If he maintains this level he’s a positive player for this team in my mind.

I was not aware of the -14. That's eye opening.

Numbers suggest he has been amongst the unluckiest players in the league. His PDO at .95, indicating that the shooting and save % when he’s on the ice are atrociously low (like most players his career pdo is around 1, it’s really a mean reverting statistic)

Also, 5v5 he’s only -7. Rest is 4v4, empty nets.

Still an effective third liner

I appreciate the sentiment & agree that he adds some important intangible value to the team as it is today...

But he's also the 3rd highest paid roster player, yet he's 17th in TOI (& 9th among forwards).

I don't see much case for using him more, and a clear offseason need to upgrade our fwd group.

By this time next year, he should be a 4th line player... And that contract will only become even more of an anchor.

Yes the contract does suck... no doubt...

Let’s be honest, I think we’d mostly written him off, but give credit where it’s due. He’s had a good year.

He looks good because he usually has the puck in the other team’s zone when on the ice. He’s been really solid this year. +/- are meaningless. It’s such a volatile stat and doesn’t really tell you much.
