It's throwing me off big time because teams already have records in the tournament etc right? A couple wins...I have questions and yet at the same time understand this is gonna be a less than perfect scenario because someone is going to inevitably have issues with things.

I'm hoping it's post draft because guys will have rust etc and a bad tournament could potentially effect rankings etc.

just replay tournament from the beginning. with a full house in August! Bedard loses his 4 goals against Austria. I think he'll be fine. They are just juniors. this is just an exercise in development.

What if he breaks his leg in multiple spots in January during the real WJC and never recovers? I'm sure Buffalo wouldnt be happy with that either. What's your point?

My point is a summertime WJC would be much closer to the training camp/season than the one in Dec/Jan. Teams are weary of that. & in a case like Shane Wright, he'll have his rights owned by a team by then vs the original tournament where he was a prospect and could make his own choice whether to play or not.

Am I the only one that wishes they would just forget about re-scheduling and move on to 2023? I qualify this by noting that I feel for the players that missed their chance to represent their country and that the WJHC is my favorite hockey to watch.

For me, what makes the World Juniors special is that the tournament is held over the Christmas holidays. Where I come from in Canada, it is the only hockey that matters in December/early-January, and it dovetails nice with the fact that most people are at home and on vacation, and can enjoy the fantastic hockey care free. The players are also in mid-season form, are solely focused on winning Gold and, at least from a Canadian perspective, often play to their full potential due to the microscope placed on them.

By contrast, in August, players are coming off summer vacation and their focus will be getting ready for their respective NHL camps. Some will be nursing injuries sustained during the grind of the season, while some of the best prospects in this age group may skip the tournament altogether to focus on the NHL. Couple this with the fact that many people will be away on Summer holidays, the warm weather, and potential attendance restrictions again, and this tournament will be of little interest to me.

It's a silly cash grab. Just recouping profits. I love my tourneys but no chance I can even watch this in summer. I barely watch the Stanley Cup Finals in June unless it is a team I'm REALLY interested in.

If everyone goes though.. it'll be neat to have a real best on best since WJ's are flawed every year. Give me my 3 Germans, my Canadian NHL players, my US NHL players, give the Finn's Raty back!, Raymond to Sweden. Let's stack it.

On a funny note.. Power may enter the WJHC with a Senior World championship and an Olympic Gold.lol

With all the Slovaks prospects rising.. you might be able to win back to back world juniors within 6 months. Slovak program couldn't peak at a better time!
I doubt it but I’d hope for at least one QF win in the next two tournaments . I just question how this summer tournament will operate, and how the parameters of the tournament will stay the same or be adjusted. Also, in august? Potential crossover with HGC than…

Yes and no.. the good nations wouldn't have too many guys at both.

Czechs would for sure and maybe Sale does both as an example.

My guess is that it doesn't end up a true best on best... lots of guys (like Nemc, Jiricek, Wright etc) will be high draft picks a month earlier and I coudl see the teams saying no to this and to be ready for camp. If that's the case, it gets watered down and becomes meanngless fast. Eg. are they seriously going to send Power after he won the World's and went to the Olympics? Same with Raymond... he keeps this up and he may win the Calder... does he really want to go to a U20 tourney when he's such a good NHL player? No idea.

I also hate summer tournaments.lol

I've followed the junior tournament from early days when Canada sent club teams only. It's a yearly hockey highlight for me. I for one would have little interest watching in August. Bad timing for hockey players preparing for an NHL camp, poor timing for their associated NHL teams and poor timing for Canadians who like to enjoy summer.

What would the cut off age be ? Players who turned 20 in let’s say February 2022 would have played this past December 2021, would those same players be eligible to play if they turn twenty now ?

As someone who went to Hell and back with Omicron, it is no walk in the park. But, while my ribs felt like they were breaking because of how hard I coughed, I never worried I was on death's door.

Teenagers should not be afraid of the most recent variant. Between the summer heat, boosters, a real bubble, and their youthful immune systems, there is no reason why a summer WJR's should not be doable - including fans in the seats.

The people who don’t want to watch durning the summer, weird to me tbh.

Do you not watch TV at all? Never go to any summer blockbuster movies? If you were in Florida would ya just buy a tent and live outside?

Hockey’s awesome no matter the time of the year. Game on!

All the posters who are being negative will fall in line if they pull this off. I hope they do.

A large part of what makes the WJC successful is the holiday season tradition. Time of year is immensly important. Hardcore hockey fans will watch regardless, but I have a difficult time envisioning the casual fan bothering to tune in regularly (or at all) during summertime. It's just not the same thing.

Rating are gonna plummet. But I suppose something is better than nothing if the IIHF/Hockey Canada are looking to recoup their initial investment.

It's January. We don't even know what's gonna happen next week. I don't believe in a Summer WJC until the gold medal game has been played.

Cases in the summer are usually low. We are also moving towards less deadly variants - let's hope/pray that continues.

If they spend the money for a "real bubble", and that's a big "if", there is no reason this can't work.

The variant that ended the WJC didn't do so because it's deadly for 19-year olds, but because it spreads super-fast.

After Delta, Omicron, etc, who says there won't be another variant?

I don't want to get into a human genetics discussion (this is a hockey thread) but everything (boosters, treatments, less deadly variants) is moving towards this coming to an end. With the right precautions, a summer tournament is more than doable.

Hockey Canada does not want to refund all the money paid for tickets in Edmonton. My guess : We will get a tournament.
