Don't love this deal, don't hate it.

But it had to be done.

I don't see why people are complaining about 5 years. If Brassard gets beat out by another player, he'll be traded. Simple.

and what center do we have that's going to do that?

I think it's a better deal than you do, but agree with your underlying premise. The anger towards the term absolutely mystifies me. It's a free option as far as I'm concerned.

I think there's upside there, other's don't - fair enough. But this contract is both eminently fair for his current production (look at signings vs. production around the league over the last year) and eminently movable, especially with each passing season (which is ironic given that the term is what people are calling out as its worst feature).

Someone made this point earlier, but I wish there was a way to see how this board would've reacted if the title of this thread was "Confirmed with Link: Brassard re-signed (5 years, $4.9M per)"...

I love the people who say they would have offered him 4.5M but 5M is too much.. it's a freaking 500K difference

so then, the answer is a clear yes...

I dont get why people are upset. What were the options? A two year-deal? Thats brilliant. Another offseason with Two centers hitting UFA.

Decent centers under 30 rarely hit UFA. By decent mean 45-50 point range.

What do you think a 2nd line center will cost in 2017 or 2018?

I think people are worried about next off season with Stepan, MSL, Hags, Staal, and Zucc all up for deals.. but I think the Rangers know more than we do with this on how to keep them.

What are you basing this off? He had one really great series against Washington where he put up 9 points in 7 games. In the 28 playoff games since then he has 15 points in 28 games. That's a 44 point pace. That's what he is and that's what you're going to see from him the vast majority of the time: A mid-40s point total and with no frills attached (ie no faceoffs, no possession, no defensive play).

They are paying him to be the second line center. He's not going to score a higher points/60 just because Richards is gone. His raw totals might go up slightly with a few extra minutes, but you're not going to see anything dramatic. His production and all around game are underwhelming considering the contract they just gave him.

Ah, I see. Brassard doesn't just score goals. He scores clutch goals. That makes them more special. I'm glad you cleared that up for me.

You've avoided two important things this entire discussion:

1) where he ranks among his teammates

1) where he ranks among his peers.

If he's on a 44-point playoff pace, where does that rank among his teammates?

And go argue with someone else if you're going to do The whole "......if you take away his good stats, he has bad stats" garbage, especially when you fail to provide where it ranks among his teammates.

That's main board teenage clown ****, man.

Oh no, they'll have to replace Brassard and a fourth line center. Of course, there's a very good chance Lindberg will be able to replace Moore anyway, to say nothing of the chances of someone like Nieves or Tambellini breaking out.

Right now Krejci is slotted to hit UFA next year and O'Reilly, Stamkos, and Kopitar are set to do so the year after. Miller could step up or so could one of the other kids. Brassard is not the guy you want manning the second line on a Cup contender.

Its not 2007. Teams are locking up their core players before UFA. You dont go into a season thinking you'll build around a UFA two years down the road.

Did you watch Nieves this season? I lost count how many times he was benched and demoted. And Tambellini quit college because it was too tough for him. Nieves and Tambellini are terrible at even strength and on faceoffs in college. And in the WHL. Neither plays any defense.

But you have them slotted to take over for a guy who's a proven NHL center?

Im going to bed.

This x10000000000

That 5 is just making people overreact ridiculously. I'm sure that at 4.9, a lot of those people would be much happier

Here are the regular season numbers: http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_stat...7=60-&f20=1.46-9&c=0+1+3+5+17+18+19+20#snip=f

Brassard ranks 87th in the league among all centers in even strength scoring. He is what he is: A powerplay specialist with no other good qualities.

And go argue with someone else if you're going to do The whole "......if you take away his good stats, he has bad stats" garbage, especially when you fail to provide where it ranks among his teammates.

Are you honestly going to try and tell me that one series outweighs every other series he's played combined, not to mention his regular season track record? He put up 47, 41, 29, and 45 points in the last four years. Last year he scored at a 42 point pace in the playoffs and finished in a three-way tie for sixth in playoff points on the team. Outliers happen. The Washington series was an outlier. He's not some playoff God. There's no such thing as a playoff God. There is such a thing as small sample size magic. And that is what you're glomming onto.

You argue in the most arbitrary, convoluted fashion possible. I make a side point that someone in the system like Tambellini or Nieves could break out and you go off on a rant about how they haven't broken out yet. First off, duh. That's why I didn't say they've broken out. Second, no that's not what I'm counting on. It's one of the things that I said could happen. Other things that could happen: Miller breaks out. O'Reilly reaches free agency, which seems very, very likely given their relationship right now. Someone becomes available in trade.

My point is that you don't lock yourself in long-term with someone like Brassard on a contract that pays him to be an effective number two center on a contender, when he is anything but that.

Not crazy about the deal, but I think some people need to stop scoffing at a near guaranteed 45 points as though Brian Boyle would be putting that up every season. Believe it or not, that is a solid offensive output for a second line center. And as much as I hate to feed the "clutch player" myth, I have to acknowledge that even this past postseason though his points were down, his goals went up, and nearly every one of them was HUGE. Happy to have him signed.

What goals in the playoffs aren't huge? We had two or three easy wins in the entire post-season. That doesn't mean Brassard has some magical skill that lets him score huge goals. It just means playoff games are tight and offense is at a premium.

In three years, even if Brassard maintains a similar point production during the regular season and continues to be a playoff powerhouse, no one will be complaining about his cap hit as the cap continues to grow. Of course, that's just speculation, but he hasn't given us any reason to think that he won't continue to grow, especially in AV's system.

12 points in 23 games

What a power house

I mean he's been pretty good in the playoffs, but let's take a step back here

I think Zuc should feel a bit hard done by here, but I guess he's just a nice guy all round who wouldn't complain about it. I think Brass would complain and throw a tantrum if he was offered the lower and shorter contract while Zuc got a long one.

Just don´t make sense that Brass gets 5@5 when Zucc, the leading point scorer and the player who arguably made Poo and Brass play as good as they did ends up with 1 year @3,5...... Both RFA, Brass has never hit as many points in one season as Zucc did this year in his whole career.

Maybe a bit higher than I would have liked to see as to creating more possibilities to this years roster
But The term offsets this basically (5 years makes it good value actually)
Nonetheless now. I am Pretty sure he will be traded - more likely sooner than later
Thornton is a possibility at the deadline
Do not really want though
Meethinx P Berglund or M Backlund + would be a nice pickups
Or how about M Johansson +?
Rights to Burmitsrov + would be awsome too
Time will tell

Brass has been around a little longer and has more NHL games. And they couldn't sign both long term right now because of the cap.

But there's a plan, Zucc will get his extension next year, say 5X4 and they'll both be locked up for a while. Brassard is useless without Zucc anyway ;)

How can you complain about Brassard facing soft competition and then complain about not giving Zuccarello the same contract? They face the same competition.

The Rangers didn't have the room for both. When the Rangers signed Zuccarello to the one year deal last Tuesday, you knew Brassard was getting a long-term deal because the funds were there.

Too many people here make no sense. You sound like the fool in the Brassard thread on the main board complaining about the contract structure. He is still upset about the Kovalchuk punishment from four years ago.

Centers are hard to find. The price for a center in group III is $5M. Bolland got $5.5M.

How are the Rangers replacing Brassard? Look at the free agent market next summer. I know the Rangers are making a trade for ROR involving Staal. :sarcasm:

Its always the same people complaining.

Brassard will be 32 at the end of this contract. Not 35 like Callahan. No major injury history.

Brassard fits the system.

The Rangers have Nash and MSL on the right side ahead of Zuccarello.

I would be really, really surprised to see more than one of those guys actually make it to UFA. The trend is to lock up your own guys before that happens. O'Reilly, I could see him hitting the market. The rest? Doubtful. And then, you're going to have to pay an enormous amount in free agency for any of those guys.

You think $5M for Brassard is ridiculous? Wait until you have to pay Kopitar $12M in two years. You guys all realize that the cap is increasing, and that contracts are increasing accordingly, right? $5M is not a huge sum of money in the current climate for a center that pots 45 points per season. If Brassard replicates his performance for the next few seasons, his contract will look extremely reasonable in 2017. If he steps it up a bit? His contract will look like a bargain.

I get that Brassard is somewhat limited in what he brings to the table. However, the alternatives aren't particularly appealing. I'd much rather lock him up long term than bank on incredibly expensive UFAs to fill our holes (that doesn't ever work for us).
