Brady has work to do in his own end, but let's just pump the brakes on how badly he plays away from the puck. He's not a floater, or lost, or disengaged.
No. Like almost every other young star winger in the history of the NHL, the two-way defensive side of the game tends to get more refined over time.
Most young star players have to sacrifice some offense to play elite defense. And once they know they can score at a high level (and are getting paid for it), the hope is they buy into the bigger team picture after all of the other personal boxes get checked off.
I'll say it again though, the rest of Brady's game as an elite PWF is so frighteningly far ahead of schedule that we really should cut him some slack for not also playing like 30yr old Alfie out there yet........
And to be fair, PWFs don't typically have to be the defensive stalwarts on their line, and tend to have a hunters kind of mindset away from the puck.
Todd Bertuzzi - one of the most prototypical and dominant PWFs to ever play the game - was also hilariously bad in his own end for anyone paying attention. And yet he still made Team Canada for the Olympics, and was on an all time great line (in an era where it was a nightmare to score).
All I'm saying is that it's on us to get Brady a more defensively sound team for him to lead - just as much as it's on Brady to focus less on points and more on defensive awareness as we all go forward together.
