It can be a viable strategy if your D have gained or are about to gain puck possession; however, it can leave your team at a disadvantage in your D zone if your D fail. Plus the Fs who are leaving the zone early need to have higher end offensive skill sets for it to work well. However, leaving the D zone early is only one of the issues with the play of the forwards in the D zone.

The wingers don't cover the points anyway, might as well do that out of the zone with a chance of offense lol

Tkachuk has 33 goals & 75 pts, he's done everything he can to help this team get in the playoffs. The goalie situation, the injuries & the constant giveaways has killed this team's chances this yr.
He needs to learn how to play passable defence in his own zone

I now think it is too because I saw Giroux doing it last game.

DJ is completely clueless
They always send a forward to the blue line wall. He hold up puck and either flips it intro he zone or hits someone streaking down the middle.

Or if the puck is coming down the middle in possession the other guy waits at the wall for the give and go.

We win in spite of this strategy. When we do win

I think it is a strategy that can work if a team has Ds who can get to the puck quickly and then pass the puck accurately. We have perhaps 4 who can do it: Chabot, Sanderson, Chychrun & Brannstrom.

I went to Quant Hockey to see which players had the highest historical SH% and was surprised by the results.

See: NHL All-Time Shot Percentage Leaders

Do you think Stuztle is playing passable defence giving the puck away four times in the last two games that has resulted in 3 goals against?

Apparently it’s what all the teams are doing now. Yzerman had an interview, amongst other new coaches, and they all said that offence was king now and that no ine plays defensive systems, or are afraid of them.

Talked about the entertainment value and such things, but also expected coaches to figure this new offensive explosion out and try to counter with new D techniques.

The jumping the zone move pull the defender out of the zone and makes room for the D players along that wall. The D either stays in and you have a breakaway option, or he pulls out and the D has a skate out option. The key is obviously that your D has to have possession of the puck, but the timing is crucial too.

Yeah, the broadcast crew commented on it last game and showed a clip with Brady at the offensive blue line and how it forced the D to drop back creating space (or give up a potential breakaway if they don’t)

Seems like we get a lot of those passes through to whoever blew the zone, but also seems like we give the puck away a lot in transition (lack of puck support?) and it burns us with a quick counter

And timing too, can’t blow the zone if the D turns it over right away or doesn’t have full control and enough time, or all of a sudden you have a 5 on 4 chance.

I posted a thread on that article

It was a really interesting read.

Same system Babcock ran with the forwards cherry picking the O zone
It did win a few cups in Detroit & does force the D back at times knowing they can break out so quickly. It's great when it works but it can also be used against you if they lose the puck in their own end as they have done so many times this yr. They really have to be better at managing the puck especially in their own zone & stop giving it away so often.

New Jersey jumps too but they have a much better counter attack team. In our system I find Brady and Batherson cheat to much to get a jump pushing the D back, Ottawa is more of a 3 zone team traditional Western Conference style team - might be a better system for them to compliment the players

Ya Poulin said they are doing it on purpose. trying to catch opposition or spread out the defence for a breakout .
Pretty obvious its on purpose with how often they do it. They're getting better at it too, guys are throwing no look clears that have a guy busting.

Practise makes perfect & while it doesn't always work now, if they can start converting to an acceptable level becomes an interesting weapon not to mention forcing the D out of our zone, so less players to keep the puck in our end & easier for our D to get the puck out ... when it works.

Both Batherson and Tkachuk need some teaching and learning regarding defensive zone play.

They all do don't they? They are a young team still making young player mistakes & that includes some of the older & better players who have made plenty of mistakes this yr that have cost them games, lots of blame to go around. That is really the sad part of this season is that if they would have cut down on those mistakes they would be in the playoffs, they hurt themselves with their giveaways & mistakes. And a lot of these mistakes are not the coaches fault, sometimes it's guys trying to do too much or simply making the wrong play at the wrong time. If they cut down on their mistakes there is no question this is a playoff team already.
