People are acting like they know these dudes personally. Who cares what they do, just be a good player on the ice and win some games damn it.

It's funny because Mrs_NyQuil follows the Senators as more of a reality show, getting vested in the "characters" and rooting for them in their professional and personal lives.

For me it's really more about the results. Just how I follow sports.

I guess the cynic in me would suggest that involvement in the community might make them more likely to want to stay, and that's how I would look at it. ;)

Involvement in the community is great marketing. Hopefully this is partly Sens marketing as well as the players great sense of fun and marketing. I know quite a few women like Mrs_NyQuil that became fans of the team when they came to know the players and like them as people. And kids too for sure will become fans when they meet a player who s nice to them.

Can we just have a characterless guy like Yashin on this team who is really really goood at playing hockey?
Ya so we can trade him for a great haul!

No thanks on a guy who will sign a contract then hold out and disappear in the playoffs while alienating his teammates while being a fake C just so the org doesn't hurt his feelings.

I mean we still got a helluva a haul so I wouldn't mind having some of those types of players. 5 years without playoffs, but more importantly, 5 years of not even being competitive

Sure but my point is that bringing in low character guys rarely improves your team or if it does it doesn't last.

Can't imagine a selfish player like Yashin fitting in with this group.

It's not a joke I think a lot of you genuinely think I don't like Brady. I don't randomly trash Brady. I'm complimentary when he's doing good things and I'm critical when he is doing bad things. Like I am for any other player on this team.

You guys have this weird thing where you try to pretend he's perfect when he clearly has some pretty big things to work on still.

You guys also seem to attribute some pretty weird shit to Brady to hype him up as well.

Like are we really gonna pretend that Brady is the first Ottawa senators to play street hockey with kids? or that doing so has some deep symbolization for how much of a better leader and everyday person Brady is compared to Alfie and EK?

Stuff like that and the insistence that the player doesn't have flaws and calling out anyone who wants to discuss these flaws is some weird cult like shit.

And I say this as someone who is a disciple in the church of Alfie, so I understand it. But can we wait until Brady actually does some legendary shit like Alfredsson and Karlsson before we start erecting his statue?

The topic of Brady here is very interesting from a sociological perspective. I don't think we've ever had a player get so much praise for having done so little.
Wonderful passive aggressive answer trying to deflect the fact that in truth you really don't like Brady that much. Why not just come out and admit it?
Regardless so far Brady is turning out to be a better person than Karlsson off the ice and even is trending a little better than Alfie. Alfie was a renowned figure in Ottawa but he was not well liked elsewhere for some of his antics on the ice. ( The mocking of Sundin for one) What impresses me about Brady is that he is so mature for a young guy of 22. Everything I hear and see about him just reinforces what a good captain he is and will only get better over time.

Thank god we got him signed and that AAV ain’t all that bad for what he brings. I hope he brings a cup to this franchise

as salaries around the league keep rising and the cap eventually going up I think its gonna look like a solid deal.

don't know why you are taking this seriously as a mark against Alfie character. that was effin hilarious and further proof of how great Alfie is. I could care less about people who get offended by Alfie having a lil fun with his good friend.

as for the rest, yes just because i talk about Brady's weaknesses and not just his strengths when discussing the player I must be a hater. I've heard it before.

What are you talking about? A better person off the ice than those guys?

I love Brady but zero reason to try and degrade Karlsson or Alfie as both seemed like good community people as well.

Alfie has numerous awards, key to the City, mental health recognition, etc...

He trolled the Leafs fans by pulling that move in their barn and it is one of the best things he has done. Who cares what Leafs fans think?

Weird take man.

Alfie firing the puck at Niedermeyer? the "probably not" comment? Although both he and Brady held out on their contract talks he asked for a trade during negotiations. His Cup "guarantee" 2003? Look Alfie became the figure he is in Ottawa basically after the age of 30 and grew into the beloved figure he is now. Let's not forget that he had some "issues" before that. My point is that at age 22 Brady is showing a maturity beyond his years and rivals Alfie's "best years".

How to say you're a Leaf fan without actually saying it... They're the only ones who bring lame crap like that up.

assen na yo
"A leaf fan"? Nothing could be further from the truth!!!*** But I do try to be objective, so let's not pretend that those things Alfie did never happened.
*** unlike many people on this board I was a Sens season ticket holder back in the Civic Centre days.

Brady's skill game has taken another level. He has been setting guys all over the place and he is the play driver on his line with Norris and Joseph.

His puck retrieval and passing to extend plays in the offensive zone has really stood out. No more one and done.

I can't believe people still trying to find ways to justify his AVV, like it needs justification. It is a bargain. The team would have no problem "ridding" itself of that salary.

And the crazy thing is, I don't even think we have a seen peak Brady. His balance and strength continue to improve, giving him a solid base to let that skill flow.

I was going to games at Civic Centre too and my point is you can make your case about Brady without having to bring down probably the 2 best players the Senators have ever had.

Don't recall Alfie asking for a trade but I do recall some idiots talking about trading him for Conroy.

Anyway, clearly you have some negative thoughts towards Alfie and that's fine but Brady is leading his way now and doing a good job - we agree there.

I think some of you must be too young to remember the early days between 1999-2005. Senators fans were literally dying for a captain like Brady or something even relatively close back in the day, espcially after 4 straight embarrassing playoff losses to the Leafs.

Rightly or wrongly, Senators fans had so much envy towards other teams in the NHL that had gritty, average skill but can fight, gritty type captains. It was pathetic actually at one point some fans suggested trading Alfredsson for players like Ryan Smyth (Edmonton) or Craig Conroy (L.A I think).

They had such a huge inferiority complex from Gary Roberts embarrassing us that one series that they felt th solution was to "get tougher", because there was definitely no shortage of skill on those early Senators teams.

Now we have a captain that literally exemplifies character, toughness, hitting, fighting, intangibles and a decent amount of skill to go along with it, and here we have a handful of Sens fans crying about how much money he makes.
