I’m assuming this is implemented by the league? This is BS. If a team doesn’t want to risk any draft or UFA knowledge leaking then don’t fire the guy. That’s the risk you take. Will it be the same with Dubas and Pittsburgh?

He talked about it with Kyper. Said he was holding a 2 and a 3 while other teams had a pair of kings. I thought he did pretty good getting a 115 point Huberdeau, Weager and a 1st for a player everybody knew wanted out of Calgary.
And schwindt

So if Treliving cant be at the draft table then it means zero opportunities for trades correct?

Keefe is gone. You can take that to the bank.
You think so? I was thinking he might start with Keefe (unless there is a coach of his preference available now) and make in an in season move if someone of interest gets fired or is available. Save his fire for later.

Any good and efficient managemenet has foresight; the time when the contracts were signed half this board was up in arms (exclude dubas fan club); media was wondering wtf is this and there were GMs around the league who said it didn't make sense to them. This was even before the hindsight of pandemic.
Also no one was stopping him from trading Nylander or not giving Rielly 7.5m @ 8yr either.

I don’t know the type of coach we need yet because I haven’t seen what Treliving is all about.
Do we focus more on defense, building from the net out? Do we adopt a heavier style to be able to play a different playoff game?
Even if the core stays, is the focus off them as individuals trying to outscore the problems? Will they be expected to change to some degree and buy into something new? All unknown so far.
I think rather than offense defence.. the change needs to be broader to how each player plays.. and that should be the same

Excluding the top guys.. when you have the puck in ozone make your plays.. but everywhere else you play the same.. whether that is puck support.. pressure.. man on man etc.. stability across all lines so everyone knows what to do in evwry situation.. cause its the same.. then when guys move around it .. guess what.. stays the same

I've seen a lot of people mention the good working relationship between Treliving and Matthews' agent Judd Moldevar, and how that should bode well for Matthews' extension talks.

I wonder why no one asked Treliving at his press conference about the working relationship between him and Nylander's agent Lewis Gross (also Johnny Gaudreau and Acciari's agent)?

I think he'd want a coach to come in right off the bat and put the team through his own training camp.

He might have someone in mind so it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

Shanahan not mentioning Keefe by name during his presser when he fired Dubas spoke volumes.

Maybe I misheard I but I think he complimented the forwards for being good defensively, but then pointed out that they're 14th in scoring chances against.

Then he goes on kyper and says his focus on improving the team is protecting the front of the net.

I think half of the leafs defencemen might be replaced within the next 6 weeks.
They should be.

No one needs a Holl. Gio, God bless him, is struggling to keep up and Brodie is kind of out of place. Ideally you probably look like:

Rielly xxx
McCabe xxx
xxx Schenn

For his cap hit and skillet he ain't going with Schenn. He can't play top pair with Rielly as it wouldn't be good enough, and he's not really the type of player to compliment McCabe.

Although, with all the work this team needs to balance everything out, Brodie would be far down the list of things need doing.

Imagine Treliving answering a direct question like this:

The hockey media would never be so bold as to actually challenge a front office personnel directly.

The closest we've ever came was Simmons going after Burke. Alas that was for clearly petty reasons not journalistic integrity

It’s pretty ridiculous honestly. I’m guessing Shanahan will handle everything but that’s a ridiculous ruling by the league.
Condition from Calgary for release/permission to sign him before July 1, not league.

This close to the draft, usually new presidents and GMs will let the current team scouts dictate most of the list and draft board and then after the draft the new, GM or president will make any changes to the scouting department, and how things go forward if they see a fit. Because Shanahan is still the president though I don’t see any major changes or issues. I just think it’s ridiculous not to let the teams new GM be part of the draft what’s stopping him from hypothetically telling them all the information before hand? It’s just stupid.

That makes more sense. Even still. He can just give them all the info he has now. He doesn’t have to be at the draft. Weird condition

Times up on Marner. He might as well have the NMC right now. He has all the power and just needs to wait for Matthews to sign. I don’t see him taking too much less than Matthews. And I don’t mean 2 million less.

Though, I personally won't be surprised if Treliving's big lesson from the last year s still probably get an extension in place for the star player rather than risk a trade where as a GM you run the risk of it blowing up in his face.

It's not a coincidence that by far the most awkward/difficult question for him at today's presser was if he had any "regrets" from the Tkachuk trade

Well we all know the first question is do they want to stay?
If that’s a yes, the next question is at what cost? Would you have a limit on salary/term?
Or would you give them both whatever?

Not many GM's get handed cheat code foundations. His slate is pretty much clean given the team he is getting. Perhaps if this was 2014 again I'd prefer someone else.

Maybe I'm a homer for our core but I genuinely believe it shouldn't be that hard for a GM like him to fix our vanilla issue and get us over the hump.

Without reading the entire thread, here's my thoughts.

I'm going to give Treliving a chance to rework this team. May not happen after 1 season, so next season might not be some kind of game changer.

As to the core four, specifically Matthews. If he wants to stay here, it can't be at the max cap hit, around $14.6M i think. That would further handcuff this team, as it has been for the past few years because of the flat cap.

Yes, the cap is going up after this next season, but still. Yes, he deserves a raise, but it shouldn't be more than $13-13.25M.

And I think Marner will proably have to be traded to make room for that, and to give Willie a bit of a raise, and have some money left over to fill voids with decent players, not scrubs.

Personally, I'd get Matthews done regardless.

Then Nylander and Marner would likely depend more on how the negotiations went.

I think Treliving is going to take a cautious approach. Matthews gets done this summer. They may wait with Nylander depending on what his ask is and see how the team looks. they deal with Marner next offseason
