TRELIVING / SHANAHAN PRESSER:

*Shanahan starts with his admiration for Treliving. Highlights knowing him well without working directly with him. Many colleagues speak highly of Brad. Excited for him to come to Toronto. Mentions experience in Canadian market is a bonus.

*Brad thanks Brendan & ownership for the opportunity. Opens by praising the city and fans of Calgary. Says its a special place with special people, and will have warm place in his / his family's heart. Praises Calgary ownership, says team is in great hands under Conroy. Wishes them all good luck.

*On Toronto - says until you are here, hard to understand the magnitude of how special it is to be apart of the Leafs. Says he's excited, humbled, but also knows there's a great responsibility in this role. Says he has responsibility to players and fans.

*Says the real draw to taking a special job, is the team. Calls them a great team, with high end talent. Knows there's been heartache and frustration in a hard league, but wants to keep putting team in position to keep knocking on the door until we break through.

*On Matthews negotiation - has communicated with a few players, including Matthews via text. Says he has good relationship with Matthew's agent. Says he doesn't get into public discourse with negotiations, but calls Matthews a world class player who is a priority. Says he wants to meet Auston, but also wants Auston to meet and get to know him as well. Says he's excited to meet and work with him.

*On Keefe - has spoken to Sheldon. Doesn't have a relationship with Sheldon, but told him it's a unique situation. Says his outside lens of Sheldon is this team has been 100+ point team behind a really good coach.

*On core 4 & changing the culture - says we have really good players. Having them excites him. Says they will review everything, but he's not about coming in and making a statement move. Being different doesn't necessarily make you better. Says his job is to protect them - says its not about just the core 4, but the entire team. It's about the Leafs, and their success. Says he's lucky to have them.

*Shanahan, on how much responsibility he bears - says he's felt pressure from day 1 until today. Sometimes along the way, need to make changes. Says he always feels the pressure, which was one of the reasons he took on Leafs job. Always asks what they can do to be better.

*Treliving, on draft restrictions - Shanahan points out that the Flames have placed restrictions on what Brad can and cannot do at the draft, but won't go into details.

*On the Tkachuk trade - calls situation unique & circumstances. Says Matthew came to them & informed them that he wanted to move, which pushed them into the market. Says they worked hard to make an organizational decision that fit Calgary's competitive window. Says he didn't want to move him, but circumstances arise and you have to deal with them as best you can. Says time will dictate how all things play out.

*Shanahan, on GM autonomy - believes in process, but ultimately decision lies with GM. Says Brad is looking forward to meeting staff within organization, and says relationship he and Brad will have as good relationship as he and Kyle.

*Treliving, on adding staff / AGM - one of the draws to Toronto was all the quality staff off the ice. Praises Brendhan Pridham, calls him the best at what he does in the league. Says Pridham helped extensively as a league employee while Treliving was in Arizona. Also Praises Dubas, and calls him a close friend. Says Dubas has left him quality pieces both on and off the ice. Says people before him, including Dubas, Lou, Nonis, and Burke, all have their fingerprints and have contributed to high talent.

*On his biggest priorities - hard to say. Lots of priorities. Says contractual issues will be dealt with. Says Sheldon situation is a priority too. Mentions draft coming up. Says he has to speak to manager's community too - mentions he's a bit behind since leaving Calgary. Says #1 priority is to get out and meet Auston. Says there's a lot to do.

*On relationship with Gio & Brodie - says its good to see Gio still playing at 75 (LOL). Says they are all good people & with good families. Says he also knows Luke Schenn. Says you can't manage from the office anymore, but next to the people.

*On why it hasn't worked so far - Says its hard to see externally. Don't get to know until you get behind the curtain. Says it's very hard to win in this league. Says talent & skill needs to work at both ends of the ice. Have to check hard in order to win.

*Shanahan, on Dubas timing - says he doesn't think it was iintentional. Says this is how these things play out. Says Pittsburgh/Fenway have been in contact, and he's endorsed Kyle. Says he's very happy for Dubas.
Thanks buddy. I had a busy morning and missed it.

Start the rebuild.

You are trading them as rentals if they won't re-sign before July 1st.

That means futures.

If Steve Simmons says I should be excited about something, I am not sure I should be excited...
Steve Simmonds didn't like Dubas, he made that clear. Was it Steve that Dubas was angry with about revealing Matthews had COVID?

If my hometown team wasn't Toronto I likely would have moved on years ago.

I lived in Ottawa for a while. Coincidentally when they were actually a pretty good team. I developed a soft spot for them I still carry to this day.

But Leafs are, and always will be, my hometown team, and therefore the team I cheer for most.

Even if they do make it hard to cheer for them sometimes.
I meant cheer for this contending team (our Leafs)

I really liked that he emphasized "check check check in the playoffs".

We are about to get a heavier team me thinks.
I read a stat 90 percent of playoff time is spent on the walls. It is a different game, and some here just refuse to accept playoff hockey never really changes. Board battles, screens, dirty areas, blocks, physicality.

Yup, I actually loved his presser. He seems a lot smarter than I originally thought, well spoken and articulate. I love the emphasis he put on checking too, when the media asked about this groups short comings in the playoffs. I think he gets it.

Gonna be another loooooooooong year though, I'm already bored of the regular season. Just want to get back here for next years playoffs already. Please can we go back to 1-8, the regular season is so boring with this playoff format.

I didn't expect him to say anything different that what's been said
It's almost like a template, I want to thank the organization, team, former GM
Believes in current staff and players

I wish someone would come out and say, F u all, this is a failure organization, we need to make changes
Coach is not good enough
prospect pool is not good enough

We need to torch the current coaching staff

If he does decide to move one of the core 4, I’m thinking it will be Willy. So….

Who from Calgary do you want to see on the Leafs???

I thought Treliving gave some really good and sound answers to the questions and seems he is well connected in with GM, agents and the hockey world the he will be able to hit the ground running,

Never painted himself in any corner and answered questions as openly and honestly as he could,

I wouldn't even get worked up if the team just scraped by with a bottom seed playoff berth. It's the post-season that actually matters. We've seen that teams don't even build up any momentum by having a dominant regular season. See Boston this year, Florida last year and even the Leafs to some extent in that Canadian division the year before. All 3 ousted before they could get out of their division.

give a blank cheque to pridham and some nice perks on the side to keep him around, otherwise Dubas will 100% poach him for his GM role IMO
I think Treliving has a long relationship with him too, he’s kind of the ace in the hole replacement to blunt what you just said. And besides, this is TO, Pitt ain’t no prize right now. One of the worst prospect pools in the league, aged core, not exactly a plum gig imo.

Yup, just get in. Seeding doesn't mean shit. Florida had the 17th most points and made it and are now in the finals.

He did mention contract "issues" and I think that lumps Nylanders situation in there. But yeah he mentioned AM a few times and I think it was good to see a lot of emphasis on making that his top priority.

I love Nylander a lot but he's a notch lower here.

Yep. Makes sense too. Any offseason-season plan is ultimately going to have to flow from getting an extension of some sort in place. Once that's taken care of the rest can be sorted out accordingly

I want him at the table more so for draft trades rather than the draft itself. Like what if the Wings are on the clock at 9 and they offer you 9th overall+ for Nylander. Sure Trelving can call his scouts and see whether or not they want 9 or if a player they like is on the board but it slows the process down. Hard to negotiate in that 5-6 minute window.
Put one or two guys at the "draft table" and everyone else in a war room.......communication is not going to be an issue
