Bring back the Burke stank, those teams at least played for each other.

Success lies somewhere between Dubas and Burke. Truculence, pugnacity, speed, skill, honour, and courage. Our boys today have 2/6, and even then the speed is lacking and the skill is concentrated in five players.

In Calgary Treliving gave out multiple contracts worse than anything Dubas ever did. So thats not great considering it's what many here have criticized the most about Dubas.
No. All the losing was the worst part. Most fans can live with bad contracts if they win a cup, or go deep in the playoffs. Also trading away so many draft picks to cover mistakes (many his own).

The James Neal contract was terrible with hindsight. But, moving it for Lucic, I thought worked out pretty well. Lucic on the 3rd/4th line, is kind of like how Domi was on the Leafs. He could provide a good amount of offense for the role, he was one of the most physically dominant players in the league in terms of hitting, fighting and intimidation. Obviously he wasn't worth 6M, but a useful piece.

Leafs are cowards but this isn’t new for this franchise. Every GM since Ferguson inherits the previous coach so that they have a bullet to use when things inevitably go wrong. JFJ kept Quinn, Fletcher kept Maurice, Burke kept Wilson, Nonis kept Carlyle, and both Lamoriello and Dubas kept Babcock though circumstances were much different given Babcock’s pedigree and contract.

It’s just so stupid. The only real change made is in the spot where it was least needed.
I think you can go back even further than that. Dryden kept Mike Murphy at first who was hired by Fletcher. Fletcher kept Tom Watt who was hired by Floyd Smith. Going back further than Fletcher is pointless because then we're back in the Ballard days when he was constantly interfering with the GMs the team had during those years.

Yes, a few other names had been bandied about the fringes of Leafs president Brendan Shanahan’s third GM hire, for which he placed “experience” as the key qualification. A Marc Bergevin Zoom call here. A Doug Armstrong pipe dream there. But from the outset and from the outside, the post always appeared like Treliving’s to lose.

For there were few experienced, untethered candidates who were slam-dunk better options.

Some will point out that Treliving’s father, Boston Pizza czar Jim Treliving, knows Leafs co-owner Larry Tanenbaum well from the business world. Could not have hurt his case.

Yet Jim’s son has never been one to rest on the family coffers.

Financially, Brad Treliving would be just fine without the Maple Leafs job, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t need it.

Respected by his bosses, his employees and his peers alike, Treliving has one of the sturdiest reputations in the business. He’s friendly and forthright. He doesn’t hide from hard questions or hard decisions.

Flames president of hockey operations Don Maloney got emotional last month announcing Treliving’s departure from Calgary after nine seasons and three playoff series victories.

“Brad Treliving is a good friend, and I think a very good hockey man,” Maloney said. “He left us, for his reasons.”

Moments after the Panthers swept the Carolina Hurricanes and punched their ticket to the final, series-clinching goal-scorer Tkachuk thanked his former GM, unprompted.

“I was very fortunate to deal with another unbelievable guy in Calgary in Brad Treliving, and we were able to get that (trade) worked out,” Tkachuk said on TNT’s post-game broadcast.

We can tell you that even before signing up his multi-year pact with the Maple Leafs, a contract that should extend Shanahan’s own current deal, Treliving reached out to Auston Matthews’ camp to open the lines of communication with the franchise’s brightest star.

Treliving and Matthews’ agent, Judd Moldaver, have a good working relationship, just as Moldaver and Dubas did.

Unsigned beyond 2023-24 and with a no-move clause kicking in July 1, Matthews’ next contract should be Priority 1 for Treliving. Matthews intends to re-sign, but he must buy into Treliving’s plan and put pen to paper the way Huberdeau and Weegar did.

A doomsday scenario would be Johnny Gaudreau 2.0, where Treliving and his staff walked 2022’s most coveted UFA out the door for zero return.

He wasn’t my preference, but wtf do I know? I hope he comes in with a clear plan to do some lifting this summer and get us on track to compete at a higher level, come playoff time. He doesn’t have to build Rome in a day, here. The foundation is built, for the most part. Time to tweak and get this machine moving forward.

My ideal GM would be Doug Armstrong, but he is currently still under contract for 3 years and unavailable at present, but as President and GM of the Blues still an opportunity to replace Shanahan a few years from now.

As this is Shanahan's 4th GM and perhaps his last as his contract expires in a couple years as well. So he better hope he makes the correct hiring decision this time, as his job likely hangs in the balance. MLSE hired a greenhorn President previously and this will be Shanny's 10 season coming up and the Leafs track record of 1 playoff win and 5 playoff games in a season is also his high water success mark not just previous GMs. That is likely well below MLSE expectations when they hired him.

He is looking for an experienced GM and Brad Treliving would certainly fit that bill, knowing all the other GMs and player agents and not new to contracts negotiations and salary cap restrictions.

They still need to sign a goalie, deal the anchor contract goalie, sign some defensemen (Gio and Brodie are looking slow now), Matthews/Nylander are still in question, Keefe is still in question (Treliving can fire any coach any time and still get 5 more years here in TOR), etc.

You can almost guarantee change IMHO.

Agree with this entire post. What did Dubas do? Nothing. He didn't draft Matthews, Marner or Nylander. He signed Tavares to that albatross contract. He had a constant turnstile with the 3td and 4th lines. He mortgaged the future away throwing away picks like they were candy. He let the agents bend him over and take it up the rear. Freaked out at fans like an idiot. Good riddance.

He was the absolute most pathetic excuse of a GM you could think of. 5 wasted years with absolutely nothing to show for it and 0 progress made. A true amateur donkey. Let us rejoice and thank the hockey gods he is not here anymore. Tre has quite the mess to clean up and tons of holes to fill.

Continuity from seven years of failure is the exact last thing that this team should want or need. We need "New Team Smell" and a complete reset of narratives and expectations. Continuity is for when you have things going well and a project that is working, not when you've got systemic leadership issues and a team who are consistently less than the sum of their parts.
Pretty sure Keefe teeing off on players and cutting ice time would have been viewed unfavorably by Dubas. If Treliving allows Keefe to hold players accountable I think that, plus some changes to the lineup, would more than qualify for 'new team smell'.

Short leash though, the second he f***s around with 11/7 he's on notice.

from the Hotstove re: Keefe

They were coached to play so slowly. Constant regroups. Very little attacking off the rush. Very little attacking from the defense; Timothy Liljegren led their defense with six goals (there were 68 defensemen in the league that scored at least seven goals last season). The forwards were well structured defensively and checked very well, which is a good thing overall, but Auston Matthews led all forwards in the league in blocked shots and scored 40 goals in 74 games (which is good for most players, but truthfully, not for him; he tied the second lowest goals per game rate of his career). The team finished 16th in the regular season in 5v5 corsi. In the right situation, it’s fair to wonder how this group looks under a different system.

Hopefully under a new GM he's not going to try to play the how many Xgf I can try to earn game

I do like that description though we were slow in a lot of aspects. We basically played soccer or European hockey on small ice with the way we tried to keep the puck.

In 2014 Treliving inherited the following leading scorers:

Jiri Hudler
Mark Giordano
Mike Cammalleri
Mikael Backlund
Sean Monahan
Matt Stajan

plus Johnny Gaudreau
and what would have been considered an above average defense group

Quite a different situation for him here.

So hold on to the coach, hold on to the core, so 2023-2024 is pretty much a waste of time then? Why would it be any different? Maybe we can get 6 playoff wins instead of 5, eh boys?
replace Holl, and Brodie with 2 D-men that can both defend, and man-handle opposing wingers and we are a cup threat with last years team.
