Fair of Nylander if he only wants 2 million less than Marner and Tavares gets. Dont piss him off now.

Locked on Leafs discussed this possibility earlier today and Michael DiStefano was especially convinced that the Leafs and Flames either have something brewing now or will in the very near future. Here's what he had to say on the subject.

this is close to that dude from Atlantic Canada saying the hunter brothers are returning.

No chance hes taking anything less than 9.5m on an 8 yr deal. Especially given what Matty and Marner will be making.
Agreed.

One of these players makes $4 mil or less than the other 3, and have been doing it for 3-4 years already.

With the next round of extensions beginning Willy has to be asking ..What about me ?

Nylander's reported ask reflects a reality that there are some elements of the game you're never going to get from him. It's a fair balance of market value and overall player style. Let's be honest here: William Nylander plays the game in a way that will give him Phil Kessel like longevity and durability. The only question is whether BT is willing to sign off on that. I believe Treliving signaled otherwise during his media appearances.

Then why didn't you show the 3-4 years? Could it be because Nylander making 4m less is justified when not cherry picking raw points in one specific season and ignoring context?

The thing about Nylander is that we just need a different element. I really love the guy, I think he's a phenomenal player, arguably a top 5 RW in the league. But our team needs a more balanced approach and it makes him the odd man out.

There's nothing wrong with the player he is, or for the contract he's going to ask for. I just really truly feel we need a different element and a more balanced approach. For example, if we were able to trade Nylander for Hanifin. I know he wants to go to USA but Treliving has ties to him and Calgary. Or a guy like say Pesce, another guy who needs a contract, a solid D-man, big/physical and fits our cores age and Carolina has surplus D-men.

Hypothetical

Nylander 6.9M for Hanifin 4.9M + a little, picks/prospects/depth players whatever, but those 2 guys as the base of the trade.

Both guys need an extension, Willy will likely get close to 9-10M, Hanifin closer to the 7-7.5M range.

We acquire a good D-man and save about 1.5-2M on the cap, we can make a run in FA for a guy like Bertuzzi or we can just afford to re-sign ROR

So it's like, Nylander 9M vs Hanifin 7M + Bertuzzi 6.5M/ROR 5M

It just gives us a deeper more balanced team

Honestly I might have to find a new team to cheer for if we run it back with Kerfoot. please no.

Agreed but I think it speaks to how bad this free agency class is and maybe the numbers these players are expecting are too big out on the market.

Definitely not the first choice but I think circling back on Kerfoot to see where his head is at on a deal is just smart business. Quality utility player who has to understand he’s gonna make a decent amount less next year , especially if he wants to stay. It’s never a bad idea to understand an asking price. He’s also hugely popular in the dressing room. Cover your bases

I could live with Kerfoot if he takes like 1m. On a contract like that, I'd take him over guys that can't skate.

both JVR and Pacioretty are pretty good skaters for their age still. I think it's more defensively can they provide value?

I don't get what role he really fits.

He's the literal human definition of meh.
Exactly. He's not good enough to play in the top 6, he's not physical enough to be playing in the bottom 6. He's average - bad at everything, not good at anything.

Like even at 1M, what purpose does he serve ? Is he gonna be grinding in the playoffs and finishing checks and winning puck battles ? No. Is he gonna be on the top line creating/finishing scoring chances consistently (I know some dudes gonna reference his OT goal) No.

The guy just sucks at hockey, he's not skilled enough to play a skill role and not physical enough to play that role. He's a perfect fit for the Coyotes, just a warm body to lace them up.

Why are you now switching to cherry picking career goals and specifically Marner? Seems like a great way to misrepresent one of the best playmakers in the world and their impact.
