What’s this rumor?

Locked on Leafs discussed this possibility earlier today and Michael DiStefano was especially convinced that the Leafs and Flames either have something brewing now or will in the very near future. Here's what he had to say on the subject.

"The Calgary Flames, if they feel like they're in a situation where they got all these guys looking to move on, they gotta do a quick reset, retool, get picks, prospects, young players, whatever it may be. It might be a match made in heaven in a way.

Obviously Brad Treliving and Craig Conroy have a terrific relationship from their time in Calgary so I truly believe there is something to be done here with the Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames. Whether it's Lindholm or it's Hanifin, I think there's a strong possibility that trade talks are happening currently and maybe something could get done prior to draft night."

Quotes aside? So don't listen to the actually players and let's just instead speculate?

Babs was a free agent for -1 month and he's got a job already. Say what you want, he gets results. Leafs were a non playoff team for one season and rose to success quickly under him, even with a dreadful defense.

That quote isn’t even about Kadri’s game. Even if it was, the relevant part would be how Kadri actually played under Babcock vs under Bednar no? He was a stagnating 40 point 3C in his last year under Babcock.

I’m sure you can find quotes of players saying they like him but where are the actual tangible results of players the teams defensive structure flourishing under him?

40 points is pretty high for a 3C.

Yeahhhhhh Destefano (Al's Brother) is a nice guy, but his musings/day dreams are not so technological.

It's possible they're working on a deal. But a trade of the magnitude, of this importance, and this soon seems unlikely.

Treliving signed Kadri to

Naz was coming of a Stanley Cup (15 points in 16 games) & 87 points regular season.

Willy Nylander is coming off a current contract that pays him.

Nylander is coming of playoff season (10 points in 11 games) and 87 point regular season.

What if William Nylander and his agent come back and say, 'well, we need $10M' or 'we need $10.5M', you know, the Marner, the Tavares-type money. What do you do in that scenario? So, a lot of work for the Maple Leafs general manager this week." - Dreger on Nylander being the biggest hurdle for the Leafs this summer, rather than Matthews.

Would you rather have Kadri @ $7.0 mil AAV X 7 years (BT contract) now or Nylander at $10-10.5 mil X 7 years new (BT contract) or trade him for better value deal?

PS. Since stats are simlar the only consideration is age as Naz is 32 now and Willy will be 28 starting his new deal?

Kadri will be 33 October 6th. so he'll be playing through his 38th. year in his current contract.

If we ignore Kadri is a 57 point player throughout his career, including his prime and Nylander is a 68 point player just in his prime, would I prefer a 38 year old Kadri making $7mm or a 33 year old Nylander making $10mm?

Kadri isn't worth Nylander
Brodie isn't worth Hanifin

I have zero interest in Kadri, but if the Leafs could land a very good defender in the deal you pinch your nose and do it.

However, I'd rather see someone like Elias to the Leafs to play with Nylander ...

Babs was a free agent for 4 years interviewing with teams and everything and he finally has a job with a team that prob didnt pay him much.

I doubt Treliving has any interest either in Kardi however the other Flames that want out as in Hanifin, Lindholm and Toffoli all players BT brought to Calgary that is a different story.

Now in regards to Nylander who was actually born in Calgary, if the Leafs don't want to give him $10.5 mil but Calgary is then a sign and trade with 8 years term would return a lot to the Leafs in trade. Willy gets his money.

Treliving did a sign and trade with Tkachuk so Florida could get the extra year on the deal.

36 goal man Toffoli would replace 40 goal Nylander as a top 6 RW.

Nylander @ 8 years @ $10.5 mil + Brodie for ???

All sounds fairly good news.

In particular if the Nylander camp are asking for 9, they'll likely settle with something starting with an 8 - so should be an easy extension.

I think the signing bonuses can get it into the 8s....

Interesting that Acciari is not mentioned there

I did think that by now, there would have been something done

That’s 3 goals and 6 assists more than stone hands Kampf at ES while playing more minutes with easier OZ starts and better linemates. I must be missing where Babcock is getting the most out of Kadri and growing his game here.

It was 44 points in 73 games, which is a 50 point pace. That is absolutely elite 3rd line production.

Nylander at 9M is a great deal, he's worth it. Also might not happen, or maybe a sign and trade if they're trying to fix the D via trade.

Please bring back ROR/Schenn, and Acciari.

Columbus also just hired Babs....babs didn't even hit free agency as a coach and a team gobbled him up.
Wow that is just like what happened to with Dubas. Babcock also concidered ered his family. Though Babcock had a much longer layoff.

A top heavy contract with only a limited NTC on the final year or two would be perfect for the Leafs for a Nylander extension, especially in the 8ish mil range per year

Well being in Calgary, there is always the need to overpay, same with Winnipeg. No one wants to play there, so as a GM you kind of have to be desperate at times. He won’t have that problem here, M and M will see to that
It’s becoming more and more apparent that nobody wants to play in Calgary on the face of it, kind of sad really. Toronto is a different animal, hence some trepidation with extrapolating he will sign people similar to what he did in Calgary.

Not sure how it would be possible but would be fun to bring in Lindholm, Toffoli, and Hanifin.

Nylander extended x 8, Brodie, Robertson, Lilly, and 28th pick
