Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

You definitely need to give Tre another off-season before making any kind of judgement. He was basically thrown into the fire when he got hired.

Lots of solid defencemen are slatted to become UFAs after this season, if they make it to free agency I can see Tre going hard at reshaping this blueline.

Rielly - ________
________ - Liljegren
McCabe - Lagesson
Timmins

Between Brodie and Klingberg coming off the books alone that’s 9.15 million.

and no 2nd three drafts from now , lol

shocking how much draft capital he traded to try to reshape the team at the t/d and his supporters just widely keep cheering im on . lol
Its a cult.

Cant really think of many ways worse to start off Dubas' tenure than he did with his signing of Tavares and the RFAs. Then to try and fix that mess he just completely gutted future assets which will just hamper the success of this team for years to come. They tried to rush everything because they made the playoffs when people didn't expect them to and for some reason that was enough to completely abandon the plan at hand. 7 years of Matthews and all we have is 1 playoff series win to show for lol.

He was only able to read the landscape and stand pat at the TDL once and only after losing to Ayres and the Canes. The other years he thought he had a serious SC contender, added at the TDL only to watch the same core fold.

Treliving inherited a great team and situation, and had plenty of time, cap space, and available roster spots to make his mark on the team.
All he had to do was maintain what he was given. Instead, he made it worse with bad decisions.
How was he supposed to "maintain" when all but one UFA Dubas left him walked? How do you give up a first for a guy who wants no part of the market and bolted the first chance he got ? Dumb asset management for 5 years and here we are.

I am not saying Tre does not share the blame but let's give him more than 1/4 of a season to get us out of the mess he inherited.

One option was signing players instead of letting them walk.
The other option was getting effective replacements for those players and departing qualities.
Treliving did neither.

Dubas was so proud of the team he assembled in 5 years, that he changed half the roster at the trade deadline last year, and than ran for the hills.

O’Reilly had no interest in re-signing here. He’s always wanted to play in the States and in a more low key market.

Schenn and Acciari both got over paid with term on their contracts. No thanks.

People still defend Dubas around here after how many years? Definitely need to give Tre more time.

You could sign someone like Hubeardeau instead who is the same price, older, and far more useless...

The Tavares contract is barely an overpay... there are much worse ways.

He chose trading picks over prospects... I for one prefer that as we have some ELCs and cheap guys who can play finally, unlike in years past.

No one says his time was a success, but looking at the team now, we have a ton of guys who are on the cusp of playing and some who are.

Treliving had the option to re-sign (or not trade away) plenty of departing players. If he chooses not to, that's his choice - I wouldn't have re-signed everybody either - but that doesn't absolve not getting adequate replacements for the players, roles, and qualities that are departing. That's a massive part of his job.

The indirect effects caused by signing Tavares was the issue. Not Tavares' contract in a vacuum. You continuously call people dumb on this site but youre not able to see this context?

What indirect effects? The other contracts signed have nothing to do with that, so I am assuming something else.

If you think it is those contracts, please show proof because I've seen none.

No 2nd this yr
No 1st or 2nd next yr
Not much to work with

Knies Cowen Minten and Grebyonkin we need good young players on ELC contracts
It's time to stop adding pending UFA's at the deadline for this team and take a step back for a season or 2. Wasting our draft capital and very shallow prospect pool on this team as constituted is a waste of those assets. We are not winning shit with the way this team is constructed...we just aren't. The bar is raised a bit from previous "Just win a round" low levels to "You better go far in the playoffs"...we are not going to go far. We should have taken a step back after Montreal and realized this team needs a lot more help than the Trade Deadline can bring us. It's still the case today. Too many flaws..too little in the cupboard to fix those flaws and draft picks are very light. Sign Willy...trade Marner and then your window will be until AM decides he wants another raise in 5yrs.

You can't go all in every year.
I think we added 10 players last yr

I believe Carolina and Vegas have there 1st 2nd and 3rd rd pks for the next 3 years.

Our defence This yr won't be fixed
Next year is the time to start to fix it
Example
Skeji
Demelo
Would be a good start

If Tree signed Shenn and Acciari to those deals...Dekes would be saying that he was a fool for over paying and that Duby would never have been so stupid. You just can't say anything negative about Duby.

Personally...I think Tree is not a good GM. I would have preferred someone else that wasn't being another Yes man to Shanny. That is all Shanny wants and as soon as Dubas even mentioned making big changes...bye bye.

Signing JT
Meant Marleau had to be traded for a first
Everything snowballed from there

You have zero clue what I'd say. Don't put words in the mouths of others.
The point wasn't that he had to re-sign everybody. You seem to have missed the part where I said "I wouldn't have re-signed everybody either".
But if a GM decides to not re-sign people and trade people away, it is their job to find adequate replacements for the players, roles, and qualities that are departing.

Yeah imagine having an independent opinion on both GM's not just trashing one because you swore your undying allegiance to the other.

One group is smart and the other is stupid, pretty simple.

Where is Treliving? He's been pretty quiet.

As a guy who supported Dubas, I agree. It is Tre's team now. Let's see what he can do.

The house is on fire.

Years of poor management has left this team a burning mess. Enter the fireman. Enter Brad Treliving.

Treliving looks around, determines the house is on fire, and immediately throws gasoline on the flames.

Bad pro scouting. Poor choices in coaching. Overpaying for culture carriers.

The quintessential sucker born every minute.

He babbles on about being competitive in the playoffs. Signs some high profile free agents who perform dubiously. Does everything except the obviously required path of rebalancing the roster.

Now the flames are hotter than ever with no relief in sight.

So the million dollar question if the house burns down is who's to blame? The fireman? Or the chief?

And do we wait for the house to be burnt to the ground first before calling for replacement?

And they got badly outplayed in 5 of those 6 games in that series and got very lucky they won.
