Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

For anyone knocking Karlsson, have you looked at his numbers?

All stats 5-on-5 from NST and Hockey-Reference

ATOI=24:26, g=7, a=34, pts=41, +9, CF%=54.9, FF%=53.0, SF%=54.5, GF%=55.3, xg%=54.8, SCF%=56.2, HDCF%=57.9, HDGF%=52.2

These are some of the best numbers of his career and, other than the gaudy points totals, are better than his Norris winning season last year.

If the Leafs could somehow afford to fit Karlsson on the team they should be doing everything they can to get him.

Karlsson is a great player nobody is denying that's not why the trade is being knocked.

It's being knocked because they have a top 10 pick right now which is great because their pick is top 10 protected but next years isn't.

Next year, a team that is already the oldest in the league will be a year older you think It's going to get better?

Probably not, the top 10 pick this year might be top 5 next.

The pens have the worst farm system in the league, they have the oldest team in the league and they are very likely going to lose a top 10 pick at some point.

I'm pretty sure Dubas can still trade Karlsson for a hefty return if Crosby will let him.

The fact they have a positive goal differential as a team, and are underperforming what their Pythagorean Won/Loss predicts, suggests they might also do a lot better down the stretch as reality starts to meet up with expectations.

Since their are likely teams looking for goaltending depth into the playoffs, this is likely when eithers value is going to be at its highest.

Last year Dumbass gave away a 3rd round pick for Dave The Save Rittich to be the third string goalie behind Samsonov and Woll.

This year, Treliving already has Jones in place - - a better goalie than Rittich, less expensive than Rittich and didn’t cost them a draft pick like Rittich.

This is another example of how vastly superior Treliving is as a GM compared to Kyle Dumbass.

Man you really don't like Treliving do you?

I mean nobody here should be a fan of the GM, of any team, in any sport but sports are results based and so far the results are pretty good.

The team is rapidly rising up the standings

The PP is clicking

I'm not fully comfortable with the goaltending, don't think I ever will be but It's been really good lately

The team is getting depth scoring.

They have 2 really solid D pairs.

Are there things I'd to see added? Of course like I said they have 2 really solid D pairs Rielly still needs a partner.

And I'd like to add a couple more forwards, one to help the PK because that is a concern, and a depth scorer, because I do wonder what happens to the depth scoring when Bobby Mcmann cools off.

But Overall the team that Treliving has put together is pretty damn good.

Except the Tavares deal has worked for the first 5 years, the Karlsson deal never did.
We are not keeping three goalies. So it's not an option. We either risk losing Jones on waivers (which we will now) or we trade one.

That's your options

So we keep Woll in the AHL?

Ya I don't think so

So in your view, potentially losing Martin Jones on waivers would be a crisis for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Would be a waste considering he's worth something now.

Or is the standard of a gm doing a great job to be to let assets go for nothing?

Personally I would trade Sammy now and go with Woll/jones

Why is keeping 3 goalies not an option again? Teams have done it before.

jones for something is better than nothing with murray being a third option for the playoffs

In my humble opinion the Tavares deal hurt the team as soon as the other 2 signed their big deals and we were unable to afford quality support on defence and in net.
i will always believe that he was a player that we didn’t need as we had more pressing issues. It was simply Dubas trying to make a big splash just like the Karlsson deal

Except Tavares didn't cost any assets to acquire.
That’s the only saving grace on the Tavares deal. Lol

In your scenario, why would a team feel like spending an asset when they know Toronto absolutely has to let a goalie go anyway?

Bertuzzi, Domi, Reaves, Benoit, Lagesson, Jones, all look like good adds at the moment. Klingberg doesn't really count to me, we never got to see him play, he was injured 4th game of season, anything after that isn't fair criticism. It was only a one year deal as well.

Pretty happy actually with the moves so far, this idea we had a disastrous off season looks less and less a reasonable conclusion. This team is built different, he's added the snot, and it's paying dividends, no question atm. Feels like the culture and identity have altered. Guess we see moving forward.

I'd look at extending Bertuzzi now for mid-term if possible. His biggest detractor is low goal total. I think that's your window to get him at a discount. Where else will we find a greasey winger with high end upside that won't cost us a 1st round pick? The 2nd line has been outscored almost every year without him (haven't checked this year lol). He looks extremely unlucky out there and I'd expect the goals will correct themselves with his level of play.

I'd also extend Domi, he's the only player I can point out who plays better at a hard assignment like centre, over a winger which is the easiest position in the league. You see some game breaking talent in his game that shows up at clutch moments which is hard to find, if you take a look at his performance in Dallas he was the same there - his play improves as the stakes rise and he's given more ice and importance.

Not sure what to do with Samsonov's contract, let's see how the season and playoffs play out.

Haha yup. A drastic change in results does change the assessment.

Dec 31st we were a .600 team with 10 regulation+ 3 OT wins in 34 starts (good for 6th last in both metrics. Mediocre 17-10-7 record propped up by shootout wins and points in extra time, skidding into the new year 1-5 in our last 6.

Over the last two months we've gone 16-6-1, 13 of those wins in regulation, and are now a .650 (~106 point) team.

I was hard on the offseason because
A-IMO it had clear flaws and left some very obvious gaps- the emergence of some young players have mitigated some of hit, coaching changes have help some, and the remainder seems to be on the deadline shopping list. (Though I still worry about a star reliant PK through a playoff grind)

B. There is no excuse for this not to be a 105plus point team. This should be the best version of the post M&M Elc leafs.

I love what we've seen in 2024- bring on the playoffs.

Who'da thunk that it was a little early to sing the "sky is falling" song back in December. It's especially ironic that it was mostly the same crowd that snapped at everybody all the time that they weren't being "patient" enough with Dubas after continual playoff failures over many years.

What change in results?

Nobody knows the results of anything in December, the seasons not even half done. Calling all of Treliving's work a disaster and shitting on him for not even being GM for half a year was and still is completely asinine.

It appears you stopped reading a little early.

Had things kept going the way they were we'd be fighting for a playoff spot, the worst version of the team we'd seen in years- with a big part of that being due to offseason moves not panning out.

Micromanaging segments of the regular season in December seems like a useless thing to do. Sorry but I've been bickered at way too much about "small sample sizes" to put any value on any of this.

The playoffs are what's going to decide Treliving's fate and legacy, not his December.

I'm a little confused here: what exactly changed between now and then? AFAIK we haven't made any sweeping changes to the roster.

This looks the most complete team, pre trade deadline, perhaps we've seen. I don't know why you expect so much turnover to just click, especially with all the alpha males on this team already. I really like that's they're sticking up for each other and I guarantee the "Leafs are easy to play against" narrative around the league is changing.

It hasn't happened all at once but since Jan 1
-some players that were under performing have stepped up (Brodie/Bert)
-some young players that were already on the roster seem to have shown the ability to play bigger roles (McMann/Liljegren/Benoit/Robbie/Holmberg)
-some coaching changes drastically changed the effectiveness of our lineup (swapping JT and Domi)

The playoffs are what's going to decide Treliving's fate and legacy, not his December.
You have to be in the playoffs for them to decide your fate, and things were looking dicey.
