Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

Disagree somewhat. The rate of failure with Leafs UFAs and offseason adds, particularly in the $3-$5 million range is not all that uncommon year to year even under Dubas' management and Keefe's coaching. I think of Barrie, Ceci, Murray, Ritchie, Mrazek, Vesey, Lehtonen, Barabanov, there's a lot of flame out potential and failure to integrate, guys don't catch on and get purged out. So Reaves, Klingberg, Domi and Bertuzzi all fit into that churn and burn pattern.

This year it seems like we lost the defensive acumen but also the dramatic decline of Brodie, Gio, Tavares and catastrophic Samsonov malfunction, Woll injury. So it's hard to overcome internal decline in multiple positions and screw up the patch work job.

In the end, who cares. It's a lost season. Just liquidate what you can and be in a better position to compete for 2025 and beyond.
I think most fans would be on-board with this idea of being sellers at the TDL. We know there is no chance we are doing anything other than the usual 1st rd flop again this year and if we can reload a bit...why not? It's not like playing for an extra 2 weeks is going to do much for the fans anyways.

I think Domi has been a good addition. Benoit, Jones to a lesser extent But that’s it. The rest has has been really really disappointing.

i know the klingberg contract gets a pass, but treliving should get Ripped apart for that signing. The fact that they scouted him and brought him and He was hurt from jump... Come on. its their job to know these things.

also is any one here even surprised he’s a shitty GM? What success did he even have prior to coming here?

The Leafs previous regime also had issues with either trading for a banged up Matt Murray in net, requiring a full LTIR treatment this year or Jake Muzzin, who was hanging on by a thread. So seems like they could get better medical intel.

Yeah for sure. There’s no salary cap on scouting and management. MLSE should do way better. But alas…. They are the leafs.

The oldest team in the league that everybody expected to drop into the basement gaining 1 point seems a bit better than a consistently top tier team plummeting 14 points in the middle of their core's prime.
Interesting.......so with this thinking, was it wise to trade a 2024 1st round pick and a 2025 2nd round pick to acquire a 33 year old Dman with a cap hit of $10M (cap hit to pens - $1.5M retained) until 2027?

No for most teams but yes for the Pens as the mandate from FSG is to go for it while Sid, Malkin and Letang are there.

I don't disagree that would be the mandate. I do disagree with Dekes assertion that "The oldest team in the league that everybody expected to drop into the basement". Seems like a narrative he wants push to avoid any "blame" going towards his boy Dubas.....and has the pitchforks out already for Tre.

Note: Crosby was coming off a 93 point season and Malkin was coming off a 83 point season where both players played all 82 games.

Why was the team expected to drop into the basement?

For a Pittsburgh team with an ownership mandate to give their 3-time cup-winning core and franchise-saving player as competitive a sendoff as possible, spending a few futures to add an elite player and dump some bad contracts is understandable.

I don't know Lemontree. Why don't you tell us? You didn't seem to be too positive about their outlook at the beginning of this season:
Thank god that moron is in Pittsburgh now, too bad Crosby's career is going to end with Dubas crashing what's left of that ship into the rocks.
And that's even after moves were made to prevent the decline. If you can't convince yourself, then you're welcome to go back to the end of last season, or even during the beginning of this season when they struggled, to read some predictions. Lots of people expecting age-related declines and for their drop off to continue. Quite frankly, I don't really care about Pittsburgh, but strip the actual teams and their situations away and I still think it's pretty disingenuous to pretend that pacing for +1 points is "not much better" than pacing for -14 points. That seems more like an attempt to absolve Treliving of his bad decisions.

Because they hired a moron who was an absolute failure in his previous tenure as their new GM, you quoted exactly what I said....."Thank god that moron is in Pittsburgh now, too bad Crosby's career is going to end with Dubas crashing what's left of that ship into the rocks".

Could you really not follow that and needed me to explain it? But why don't YOU explain why Pittsburgh was destined to the basement prior to the start of the season?

Dubas set this team back.when he ran away Shanahan should have been GM
now

He talks in circles. Don't engage and save your sanity.

You said that you disagreed with the idea that people thought they would drop off. But your position in September was that they would drop off, and you're attempting to justify that position again now. So it's pretty unclear what you were disagreeing with...

I'm not the one that thought they'd drop into the basement. That's why I asked you. Most commonly cited reasons were age-related decline and reasoning similar to yours. Not sure how we got here from my pretty simple statement that a team gaining 1 point is quite a bit different than the 14 point drop off we were having under Treliving.

So "everybody" according to you...your words that you brought up in this thread. It's not worth engaging with you in conversation regarding Dubas......you are so brainwashed on the Dubas topic it's actually cult like and void of any rational thought or perspective.

This will be my last conversation with you on this topic.

Yes, I thought the Pens would drop off dramatically from the previous season......have you been able to figure out after which off-season event happened that made me feel that way? I will give you a hint........if they didn't announce a certain hiring....I wouldn't have expected the decline.

You hand Dubas the keys.....you better have triple A road side assistance on standby.

I don't care why you expected the decline. The point is you expected the decline. So did many others. So I'm not sure why you quoted me to disagree with something you acknowledge as true. Because I used "everybody" in its common hyperbolic form to describe a large proportion of people? You clearly just want to instigate a fight. Not interested.

There's defending what Dubas did in Toronto and then there's defending what Dubas is currently doing in Pittsburgh.

At no point in my time as a Leafs fan have I ever bothered to defend or even cared what a former Leafs GM is doing on another team. I've seen a lot of people defend that Lou should've been here over Dubas, but at no point have I ever seen people directly defend moves Lou made with the Islanders.

Treliving strikes me as another john ferguson jr., Dave Nonis type hire.

It's pretty crazy that he got the job in the first place given we have been conditioned to "think big" and have ambitions of being a contending team.

What in treliving's past gives the remote idea that he would put us over the edge?
