Aside from #63 himself, the problem with that suspension is the league openly admitted that disciplinary measures can be discretionary and subjective just to send a message. If any other player pulls what he did, they get 2 mins but #63 gets 6 games. Go ahead and try to quantify all this this from the NHL rule book....complete circus league.

Bruins swept Capitals last season but you are correct 90% of HF members picked Capitals and would only leave the house in pairs when Tom Wilson was in Massachusetts

Once upon a time the whole city of Montreal would be on alert when Lucic and Chara came to town, Marchand could do his thing bc he had back up.

If 99% of players did this max 2 games maybe 1 and a stern warning

but Marchand’s had TWELVE hearings - 8 times suspended and 4 fines

I give him 10 and hope he gets it / he’s a smart guy, driven, charismatic, funny, a HOF player but seriously they doesn’t mean you have a free get out of suspension card

If Sweeney had drafted both Sebastian Aho’s and Mrs Foligno had a girl instead of Nick we wouldn’t be in this fine mess
No you are wrong , if Neely and Jacobs did not hire Sweeney in the first place your listed mess would not be ............

I know this isn't the point, but I was curious about something.

Yeah, you're right, this board was 90-10 in how they thought the Bruins/Capitals series would go.

90% thought the Bs would win, with 60% predicting it would take 6 games.

Series Talk: - #2 Capitals vs #3 Bruins

I’d be more ok with this if Mackinnon got anything for targeting a kid with long term head issues right in open ice with no puck around.

I've watched that play probably 50 times and I still can't find anything to convince me there was any sort of malice. There's definitely going to be a little contact regardless, but a lot of the impact comes from Patrick cutting inside a little bit and turning his head at just the wrong time as Mackinnon comes through. Not trying to blame him for what (for him) could be a career threatening injury in any way. But I really do see that as more an unfortunate sequence of events. Mackinnon doesn't elevate into the head in any way from what I can see. It just looks like he's trying to establish body position in pursuit of the puck which happens hundreds of times every game with no consequence.

I also see it as in no way comparable to what we're talking about with Marchand. The plays have zero resemblance to one another at all.

I was alluding to my list of the Sweeney dissenters

the pink hats will always pick Bruins and want Marchand absolved of any wrongdoing

How can you watch this and say there was nothing behind it?

"Nothing behind it" in the sense of malice. Clearly he leans into the player. Clearly he is attempting to make some contact.

But it's really unfortunate timing IMO and I find it difficult to just chuck a ton of blame onto Mackinnon with that in mind. Patrick turns up ice and turns his head around at the exact moment Mackinnon SLIGHTLY leans in. Mackinnon puts very little force into the hit itself. In real time, it looks like a totally normal play in which a player is just trying to gain body position. Only on replay can you really see what happened with the head contact.

It's the type of play that just isn't going to get someone with no or little history suspended. It's an every day play that had a really bad result.

There’s nothing wrong with that play according to the league - just ask Hathaway who’s knocked guys out twice in the last month with it

But it didn’t embarrass the league so alls good

There's a lot more intent in both of those plays IMO than what Mackinnon did.

Am I subconsciously cutting Mackinnon a little bit of slack because he's not a "tough guy"? Eh, I'd like to say no, but to be honest, maybe a little bit. The first play you showed by Hathaway involves WAY MORE force on the actual hit and the second is just a sneaky, cheap play when the player hasn't played the puck in about five seconds.

Well . . . first I'm obviously a slow reader as that took closer to 10-min.

I honestly did not really read anything about the incident after I saw it. The optics just scream that the talented potential HOF player just doesn't get it. And at any moment could hurt his team.

But if that is all Jarry did/say? <insert facepalm>

I agree, if you're going to lose your shit like that, lose it over something really nasty, like a comment about your mother/wife/kids not over some lame chirp about a save.

I’d like to be mad at the league but I have no energy to be. Had more than enough of Marchand costing the team over nothing incidents. Especially when they’re not in a position depth wise to lose him. And when Bergeron had already clearly been knocked out for some time. It could have been 12 games and I wouldn’t have complained.
