“I think it’s helped people on the outside as well to see how good he is and maybe shed some of that reputation that he brought upon himself earlier in his career,†Bruins coach Claude Julien said of Marchand’s play at the World Cup. “He’s honest about it. He’ll tell you the same thing.

“He’s really starting to shed that reputation. He’s earning a lot of respect from the people watching. But also people in the dressing room are discovering how good a person he really is, things we’ve known for a long time in Boston.â€

“Well-deserved contract for Brad with the way he’s grown as a player, as a person, and everything else,†Julien said. “He’s become a real elite player. He’s being rewarded for it.

“At the same time, I feel it’s a friendly cap hit for our hockey club for the type of player he is. I think both sides won on this. I really do. You hope it’s a great example of more of those to come.â€

Some very candid words from Claude here. Good stuff.

Fair deal, Brad probably wanted the extra term so Sweeney got to save some on the AAV

Interesting to see that it was done before the WC, while the hand wringing crowd was out in full force about a deal not being done. Eat crow, *****es.

people who know have said multiple times here that Sweeney is not a media guy and doesn't leak things to the press the way Chiarelli did. Nobody should be surprised that Bruins news doesn't leak, but people are going to believe whatever they want to.

chiarelli leaked things to the press? i havent seen any bruin brass leaking stuff to the press in my lifetime. i love to dig for dirt but ive never seen a supply of dirt that comes from bruin management

its ok i guess, but the way most moves 'surprise' us i wonder how some posters here can continue to eat up rumors like they are gold?

i mean i made dozens of posts in the year leading up to boychuk, lucic, eriksson moving on... but it sure as heck had nothing to do with leaks from the front office.

all i needed was my common sense

and i made dozens of posts about krecji and krug leaving... so my common sense is only right about half the time.

ive never seen any insider right more than half the time.

i see dom sharing dup7 had the details but i feel in my gut this comes from the marchand camp. i still remember the posts here where marchand was yapping at the subway shop...

i think marchand likes to talk to his buddies

jeff friessen was a kid from my hometown... he liked to talk to his buddies.

nothing wrong with guys talking to their buddies... but i will stick to my guns here that the front office doesnt leak much to us

A very good, and important deal for Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins.

I believe the Bruins Nation was in need of some positive news, and I think Don Sweeney can bask in a little post summer sunshine in this.

And if his team performs, maybe even a little while longer. ;)

I prefer this deal to the one Lucic signed in Edm. Couldn't have kept both at these numbers. They picked the better lw to commit to for the long haul.

Well they could have, Backes is essentially getting Lucic's money.

Although being a C/RW, Backes is probably a better fit long-term in Boston with the glut of left-shooting prospects the Bruins have battling for spots over the next several years.

Way too many years and 5 of them with a no move. I love Marchy and want to have him but this smells of Chia to me.. Too much term for ANY player. I would have done 4 years at 7 each then see..

Is this you being positive again? Dude, who peed in your Cheerios? Have you watched any of the WC (or the 2015-16 NHL season for that matter)?

This deal was below the going rate for players of Marchand's caliber. "Smells of Chia" would have been a deal like Krejci's, where he got top dollar and all the bells and whistles (NMC/NTC) to boot. Good deal for Marchand, but a great deal for the team IMO.

Most of the stuff that gets out does not come from teams. It comes from agents who have something to gain from getting information out there quickly and accurately. And some come from family members or very close friends.

But you're right, teams very rarely leak information because they have nothing to gain from doing so. But this continuing argument that people don't get inside information has to stop. You've been making the same argument for a long time. Fact of that matter is it does, and just because it doesn't come from a team doesn't mean that people aren't in the know.

Chiarelli absolutely leaked things to the press. He also liked to screw with the press too.

Case in point: Malcolm Subban. Told the press they weren't drafting him for weeks and then drafts him.

I hate 35 and 36 year old hockey players but Marchand,in my opinion,is at times the best 2 way winger in hockey. In years 7 and 8 they may be paying 6 million plus for a 3rd liner. Bergy will probably be gone or a 38-39 year old player.

Was chatting up the Marchand situation with a few buddies before a beer league game and I told them that the world was going to see Marchand on the big stage, and it would open their eyes to what Boston Fans have known for half a decade.

I went out on a limb and said he'd outscore Crosby.... and be the tourney MVP.
After 4 games he sits 2 pts behind Crosby, so there is a chance.

Can't wait to see him poke at Chara all week long!!
