The AAV is right, but I can't help but feel the term is 2 years too long.

Marchand is super effect right now and coming off a great year, but it was also his first 30 goal year.

If you remove last years career highs in goals (37) and points (60) heading into a contract year, his career per 82 game averages were 25 goals and 49 points

I just think 8 years might have been too much term at $6+ to give a guy whose production line outside of last year was good, not great for a non center.

He is also is 29 when the deal starts, its not like he has yet to enter his prime either. He probably has 2 years left of his prime when the contract kicks in before his numbers start trending downward, another reason why I think the 8 year term is too long. You can tolerate buying 2 years of prime and 3-4 years of start to decline. I am not sure you want to buy 2 years of prime and 6 years of decline

Great deal for the Bruins. 8 years isn't ideal but he clearly gave up $$ in order to get 8 years. Smart move by both parties.

Great cap hit, questionable term. However it's better than losing him in free agency.

Decent signing.

At first glance I thought the cap hit was a very good deal, but with that term it will get interesting towards the back half of the contract.

6x6 wasn't happening ever. Every team in the league would offer better terms than that in the UFA market. I am sure Marchand would have got 6X7 offers from most teams.

IMO Boston would have been better off giving him 6 x $7 mil

And extra $875k per year for 2 less years to not be as worried about this contract crippling you down the line seems way more reasonable.

Boston isnt going to break their cap structure over an extra $875k. Thats less than a standard ELC max

I'm shocked the AV is so low.

I thought he was going to get $8m. Great signing.

One of the few players in the NHL that's worth the price of admission.

The odds of Sweeney being GM the last few years of that deal is very low, so why not give the player eight years? If it's a headache, it'll be for someone else.

Good for both parties. Definitely a guy you want to lock up for a long term if you can get that good cap hit.

AAV is where it's at because of the term.

I'm sure it's structured to be relatively buyout friendly 35+. Or at least more so frontloaded.

HawkeyTalk pretty much nails this.

The contract happened because of the term.

8 years is CRAZY. What if he declines majorly in 3 years? With his style of play that is very possible. That could look like a brutal contract in 4 years.

people say this everytime someone gets a long deal

do you think it would be better to let him walk? and do not say 'no it would be better to give him 3 years' because you can be sure another team would give him the term he wanted

Might be too long, but who knows what the salary cap will be in 5/6 years. And for the next few seasons, that cap hit is perfect. I was figuring him closer to 7 million, so I'm really happy.
