The 71st overall pick of the 2006 draft, Marchand has managed at least 20 goals five times in five full seasons with Boston (he had 18 goals in the 48-game season), doing so with minimal power-play time. In fact, his 66 even-strength goals since the start of the 2013-14 season lands him in the same ballpark as more reputed scorers like Crosby (69), Patrick Kane (69), Phil Kessel (68) and John Tavares (67).

That's actually pretty crazy when you think about it.

Will be interesting to see if they use him on the first power play unit this year. Unless it struggles I'd think Backes simply slides into Loui's spot as a net front presence. Love the contract.

p.s. It'll be a bit strange and disappointing for Bruins and Pen fans after watching the damage Marchand, Bergeron and Crosby were able to do together.

after watching him at eh WC finals, the Bruins should have paid BM even more. What a fantastic hockey player. In maybe 2 years after he scores 40-50 goals he will hate the Bruin for cheaping out on his new contract. I say redo the new contract to keep him very happy, 8 x 8 per year should be right for a 40-50 goal guy in his prime.

The question is whether we should try a Marchand Spooner Bergeron line (with bergeron taking the face-offs), and keep Backes as 3rd C.

Nah. Bergeron stays at center. He is the player he is now because of his play in that position. A few games playing with Crosby with team Canada as a winger, do not nullify 12 years, especially known he is one of the premier players at that position.
