The Blues have some nice checkers, but when it comes down to it, besides Reaves, Polak and Stewart, who do the Blues have that can fight? And Polak isn't really a fighter. Backes plays tough, but is a terrible fighter. The Blues are a pretty soft team and needs to get bigger and tougher badly. A tough LHD would go a long way and a another winger who can fight too.

I agree. Fraser from Toronto would be a good pick up. LHD and tough. He isn't afraid to go. Fought some tough customers. He's like +15 this year too.

I'm really not sold on Kulikov. I know he's young, but I have to be honest, he reminds me a -ton- of EJ.

I would love Sidenberg. I think he's exactly the type of player we need on our first pairing with AP. Marc Staal always springs to mind as well.

We don't need a total stud. What we do need is a solid, two way D man who can make a good first pass and play against the opponents best players.

With the Blues lack of toughness, they better not trade Stewart. We have way too many guys who don't / can't fight.

I was just gonna inquire about him. Bruins have a logjam at center especially with Kelly and Peverly on the third line.

2 good gritty 3rd line tough to play against centers. Peverly being better offensively, Kelly defensively.

Could a deal be worked out around them, not necessarily straight up of course? And depending on the deal, Kris Russel would be another welcome addition.

No chance of getting Stewart with a package centred around Peverley or Kelly. At this point, Stewart isn't going to be getting moved.

As for our issues at centre, I'm hopeful that we'll sign Lehterä next week to solve that in the short term.

I dont know if they will sign him unless they can drop a contract first, right now they are at 49 so they can only add one more. Would they use that on Lehtera or will they try to move a contract first?

If we can Lehterä now and believe he can contribute, then I don't think we hesitate to use our last contract spot on him. If we were to make a trade where we were getting 2 players for 1, there really wouldn't be an issue with us dumping one of the FA's we don't plan on resigning into the deal for logistical reasons. Doesn't make any significant difference for the other team.

We can also move around contracts at the minor league level. Someone could take Brett Sonne for a conditional 7th for example.

I'm pretty sure if they sign Lehtera now, he'll have to pass through waivers.

I thought it was established your own RFAs don't have to pass through waivers.

That makes sense. I haven't kept up with all of the back and forth about it, re: O'Reilly. Wasn't the rule before based around playing in another professional league after a certain date?

Yeah, as long as the team owns the rights to the player (RFA), then said player does not have to pass through waivers, so Lehtera wouldn't be subject to waivers if we sign him. I believe this provision is a new addition to the CBA versus the previous CBA. But in Calgary's case, O'Reilly wasn't their RFA, and thus would have been subject to waivers since he played in a foreign league past the NHL season start date (the season start date is key; my understanding is that if O'Reilly hadn't played a game in the KHL past the NHL season start date, then there is no waiver requirement). Just an all-around weird situation.

I want to say that seems like an oversight, but, honestly, I wouldn't doubt that was considered and left in as discouragement against offersheeting holdouts. Nevertheless, it seems that we sometimes get good, honest reporters relaying bad information. I'm interested to hear a GM interviewed about this.

Guys/Gals I am curious, how has schwartz looked for you guys. Can you tell me his pros and cons so far? I've always questioned his offensive ability and how it'll transfer to the NHL due to his size and possibly skill. I haven't seen enough of him recently to make a judgement so I was curious and was wondering if anyone was curious.

He was put on the first line against Edmonton(take that how you will) and responded with getting the first star of the game with a goal and an assist.

There have been maybe 2 or 3 games where he hasn't looked like what he looked like last night, but was on the 4th line most of the time. He's basically what we wanted him to be, but "puck luck" hasn't really gone his way most of the time, and he has just recently been with teammates that can finish. Much more solid defensively than I was expecting, and he isn't afraid to throw his body around. Looks like he can take a hit, too. Once he fills out a bit more and gets more experience I think he will do some big things.

Tough to say. He's played almost the entire season on the 4th line. In the games he's gotten more of an opportunity, he's done pretty well (last game against EDM, earlier this year on the road against DET). He's aggressive on the forecheck, and I think he's got a fair amount of skill.

His defense isn't up to snub yet, but he's not a complete liability either. He seemed to really add a spark to the top line with Backes and Oshie the other night, but I think we need to see him in this role for a couple more games before we can really say.

Only player on that list I'd be interested in is Ladislav Smid.

The Blues need a defensive rock with some size and an edge, not another PMD.
If a PMD would work, we'd give the spot to Redden or Russell and be done with it for a fraction of the cost.

It's not working, which is why we're having to force Ian Cole into the spot. Cole's defense has been fairly shakey, but it's better than Russell or Redden's.

People really need to start looking at the playing style of these guys and quit throwing names around. The Blues have a very specific need on the blueline and simply getting a "big name" won't cut it.

Any suggestions? I think Sekera would fit really well, but I'm not sure I like the cost for a complimentary player. Guys like Kulikov and Orlov might not be ideal in terms of playing style, but they make up for that in overall quality IMO. Their may be an issue with cost in the long term though.

Šmíd is a player I like, but he'll get big money that he isn't worth if he gets to UFA. I would hope that he makes it very clear to Edmonton that he won't be signing an extension and we could try and pick him up at the deadline and sign him to a fair priced extension.

His skill and offensive instincts are great, the problems with his game are his defensive play and size. The fact is that he is 5'9", 180lbs and only 20 years old with 24 NHL games. It is going to take him some time to know how to effective use what he has at this level.

He has played the majority of this season on the 4th line to help him round his game a little more, he moved to the first line last game and was clearly the best player on the ice against the Oilers. He'll be on the same line tonight.

We would probably spend the next 15-20 years kicking ourselves if we were to trade him IMO.

Marc Staal's name has been thrown around as well.

If Staal became available then I think the 'Canes would put together a package for him. Considering what they paid for Jordan then I wouldn't be willing to stand in the way of them completing their Staal collection.
