Blues are currently out on DeBrusk. Unless the cost was cheap and we found an easy cap solution, then this was probably never something we'd do. If Boston waits till closer to trade deadline, then maybe.
With our current roster/cap crunch would be difficult to make any trade that isn’t at least cap neutral. As we get healthier that could change.

I'm glad we're out on Debrusk. We can't afford to spend $4M on a struggling young player and we have enough depth (when healthy) that makes Debrusk a luxury and not necessity. Our #1 target should be to improve our back end, we just don't have enough capable puck movers to supplement our offense.
Don’t agree with that, we are more than fine at moving the puck in transition. We don’t have enough defensemen that are actually good at defending.

Right. If we were 100% healthy, I could see us moving Scandella in a deal where we ended up with DeBrusk, but with Faulk and Walman currently out, that move just isn't worth it. I suppose we could do a 3 team deal with Tarasenko where we get DeBrusk and stuff, but that would be very disappointing with how Tarasenko has been playing this season.

I imagine Army wants to get through this COVID stretch and other minor injuries, and then reassess what we need and where are surplus is.

Kill two birds with one stone and get a defenseman that can both move the puck and defend.

I wouldn't say we are more than fine, but we're not horrible. Krug/Faulk/Perunovich are quite adept at moving the puck but Krug has been struggling as of late and Perunovich is still prone to rookie mistakes. We already know Mikkola is horrible with the puck, and Scandella/Bortuzzo are pretty meh as well. I'm more concerned about Parayko who constantly chips the puck out and gives up possession, rather than actually trying to make a play.

I don’t see a silver bullet out there. We need Parayko, Krug, and Scandella to play like they are capable (and to get Faulk back). If Parayko and Krug continue to struggle, adding Chiarot or Gio or whomever ain’t gonna fix what ails us.

Couldn't agree more, was actually looking for the right words myself and I feel like you nailed it when you said a "luxury and not a necessity." Even Army recently made comments that he was pretty happy with our forward core and that our defense is a bit more of work in progress so why spend assets on a luxury instead of need.

He is noticeably making better decisions with the puck.

I saw something yesterday about Gio actually being available, and I have a gut feeling he’s the guy we end up grabbing.

I hope we're not biting. Sure, Giordano is a good player, but I'm reluctant to spend assets on a player who's already 38 and even if we sign him after this season will only decline due to age. If we decide we need to trade for a defenseman I rather hope we go for someone a bit younger with term.

Until I see him consistently making passes to exit zone with possession I remain unconvinced.
Or if he can't make passes out of the zone, at least carry the puck cleanly out of the zone. Sure, Bouw in his prime was a great two-way defender, but the older he got, the more lackadaisical he got with his passes. There were plenty of times he would miss his mark and it would result in an icing. If Mikkola can develop a good zone exiting ability by himself OR a good short pass to his partners in the d-zone, then I will be more than happy with him as a player. He just needs to learn to settle the puck down or develop the ability to get a wobbling puck out when needed.

Everyone here talks about the need for improved defense and I agree. I do think Mikkola and Perunovich will continue to improve. I think there has been great improvement in Mikkola this year compared to last. Here is one trade that I want to see happen in the off season. O’Reilly has one more year on his contract and has clearly proven to be a valuable player for us. But before giving him a new contract and then see him age before our eyes, he should be traded to Calgary for Matthew Tkachuk. He also has one year left on his contract, it seems he would like to be in St. Louis, and Calgary would like to get something for him if he has already decided to not resign with them. I think this is something Calgary might agree to. If we have to sweeten the deal with a draft choice or two, so be it. We gain a young power forward with grit and sink money into a contract that will have the player in the prime of his career. O’Reilly doesn’t have a no trade contract as he was traded to us. If Tkachuk has decided not to resign Calgary will clearly trade him, might as well be with us.

I believe ROR has either a NTC or NMC. he waived that to be traded to STL, but I don't believe that waives it for the life of his contract

I also believe CAL will want younger player(s)/picks

If the Coyotes are for sale, wouldnt it be nice to be on the other side of a Pronger situation? Let's dial up our old buddy Billy Armstrong and see which of his former picks and upcoming Blues draft picks it would take to get Jakob Chychrun in a Blues sweater.

He was salivating over the Perunovich pick. I'd dangle Joel Hofer too.

Scandella, Perunovich, Hofer, 2022 1st, 2024 2nd for Chychrun? Given that Coyotes already retained on OEL, I wouldn't expect them to retain even the smallest amount of salary on Chychrun.
Perunovich and Scandella account for 4.2M cap charge vs. Chychrun's 4.6M. Would need to figure out how to clear the remaining space needed.

I would do this in a heartbeat. Chychrun is 23, has 3 years after the current at 4.6AAV. He’s skating 23+ a night and is coming off 18 goals in a shortened season.

I’d hope the fact that Bill Armstrong picked the players he’d be trading for, that STL would be in the mix if Chychrun were traded.

The result would allow the Blues a competitive cap situation for multiple seasons. I like Peronuvich, tons, but we also signed Krug for 7 years so....
