I don't think we will be getting that top 4 LD. It really looks to me like we are going to roll with Krug-Perunovich-Scandella down the left side. I predict Perunovich takes first pairing away from Krug in two seasons or less. I am not thrilled with it, but I can live with it and I have accepted it.

Wait, how does NYI add 3 mil in AAV? I thought they were tight against the cap. Just seems like an unrealistic way to end up with Lindholm by only giving up Tank.
Yep. I was gonna post something similar. I think NYI needs to add two rostered players to make this work.

I fell in love with the way he played last night. We're going to be fine.

As things stand there are no actual Cup hopes. But you have also put Perunovich on the top pairing based on one game, so I know you hold an entirely different set of ideas about the defense

I'm an optimist and also I believe in my team.

Mutual termination of Komarov's contract which gave them a bit more room.

Makes sense. Though Dobson is due a raise next year. It would work this season, but that remaining year of Tank is gonna make it super tight again.

Guess it depends on how you define hopes. Like I've always hoped to win the Power Ball. Whether that is realistic expectation is different issue.

Here's the thing about the modern NHL - it's all about moving the puck out of the zone vs. any type of old school metric. Basically, you want to stay between your man and the net, without letting them break contain. Then, once they make a mistake/lose control, you -must- move the puck up and out of the zone efficiently. AP was a darn good in-zone D-man, but his real value came from moving the puck out before the forecheck could get set up. If Peru can do that consistently, he can play against top lines so long as our forwards are defensively responsible.

Tell me again how folks think he is gonna return a 1st and quality player with his contract? We need to accept that we either take back bad money or retain or we will get return that is gonna fall well short of what many here think he is worth.

We're stuck in a weird spot with Tarasenko. NYI may feel like they're one big move away from a Cup, and I think they are. But the way Lamoriello operates, it's kinda like Army. He gets the contract at what he wants or he walks away. Hard to see him adding a big AAV at max trade cost. We'd probably be asked to retain on a deal to NYI, honestly. Devils would give us more than NYI, but they're not exactly contenders. No motivation to make a pricy move until the deadline. Tank's value may be higher or lower by then.

I would say considering how well he is playing, scoring at nearly a 40 goal, 40 assist pace, that he could fetch a nice prospect or young stud defenseman. When he is healthy like he seemingly is now, he can will his team to a win like he would against Chicago, Dallas, or Nashville. I mean Kyle Connor is getting 7.5 mil, although he has never had a major injury, but they score almost identically over the course of their careers. Connor, as I said, has had the benefit of being mostly healthy, so if you adjust his goals to reflect Vova's games played, then he has like 20 more goals. Point wise, Connor has a 6 point advantage when games are adjusted. So I would say a healthy Tarasenko is definitely worth 7.5 mil and would fetch a substantial deal.

He's a shutdown defenseman? :skeptic:

And there it is!

"We need moar size n toffnus bro"
"We need shutdown defensemen bro"

It's time to move on from this way of thinking, accept what we have one defense, embrace a new identity built around puck movement, skating, and offense from the backend.

So what, he's not a pure shutdown defender, but he adds even more firepower to a defense that's already loaded with it!

Besides, it's not like he's a slouch defensively either.

I'm fine with that, we can make this work!

Perunovich-Parayko
Scandella-Faulk
Krug-Bortuzzo

We need toughness, bro! You know, like Jay Bouwmeester. Lol.

I think people are quick to forget that this team, despite injuries and COVID, still the last 2 playoffs have given up 42 goals in 10 games, while being 2-8. This team, granted, is better and deeper offensively. But I feel like shouting down the criticisms on defense doesn't really make us better defensively than we are. The defense now feels like the goaltending during the Halak/Elliott years. Good enough to get the job done during the regular season and obviously not in the playoffs. And nobody WANTS the Blues to be bad in the playoffs. The criticism isn't having a bias and needing to be right. It's what people honestly see as what has held us back and could very well continue to hold us back going forward.

.

JayBo was neither physical nor a monster in front of the net, nor do I feel he was tough . He was a smooth skating dman that was positionally sound and had a lot of experience to go along with high Hockey IQ. Size difference between SP and Jaybo is a bit of an issue for sure, along with experience (which to me is different from IQ), but they do defend in a similar manner.

I don’t think issue is missing a certain type of D. It’s that our identity has changed and we need to as a team embrace that and maximize it. We get stuck in between and get tentative.
