The D has been struggling all season, that didn’t just start to happen when Krug went out.

Krug and Scandella aren’t terrible players but it’s gonna be hard to add the guy we need with their salaries already on the books, while also finding ice time for Perunovich.
Scandella + Krug = ~ 10mill.$ AAV

I would rather keep Scandella and dump Krug out, but looks like we are stuck with him 5 more years.

Lindholm hands down. We have enough defense generated offense, particularly with Perunovich waiting in the wings. We need a Bouwmeester type, someone who excels defensively.
Completely agree. Giordano isn’t a one dimensional offensive D tho. He’s just not as stout as Lindholm in that regard but much better with the puck and Lindholm is more physical.

And this is more of a just for this years cup run thought process, not long term so outside of our 2nd pair we don’t have any real quality puck movers. So Perunovich is t really in the equation for me come playoffs.

Assuming:
Lindholm/Gio- Parayko
Krug-Faulk
Walman -Bortz
Mikkola
also assuming Scandella goes the other way for cap purposes

You have Walman-Borts 3rd pair you may as well save your draft picks bc we ain't going far with that. 3rd pair is where we need to upgrade.

Couldn’t agree more. Prefer Mikkola to Walman personally, due to his impact on the PK and defensive ability in general.
Obvi I’d love to see Perunovich-Bortz if scottys skating/defensive game is up to par.

but if we’re worried about shutting down the Mackinnon’s/mcdavids etc….

A Lindholm-Parayko with ROR matchup could potentially get it done

I'd be cool with Gio, but, would much rather have Lindholm. Gio, Lindholm, or Leddy would all be pretty good in the top 4 imho. Would all need to come with some retention tho.
Lindholm is likely a fantasy with the Ducks unlikely to be sellers. How could they unplug this resurgence by trading their #1D? I don't see it...though I'm on-board if Anaheim knows he won't extend and wants to recoup assets.

Yeah, that's the problem with Anaheim, they play in the Pacific. I could easily see them being a playoff team or in contention and Lindholm extending, it's probably the most likely outcome.

If you are going to make pairs include Perunovich ffs. He is our Makar/Byram and needs to play asap. He would make a big difference on the PP because Parayko sucks at the blueline.

Krug - Faulk
Pernunovich - Parayko
NEW - Bortuzzo

I was under the impression Peronuvich prefers the right side despite his stick side and would swap Bortuzzo out. Is this incorrect?

Krug -Faulk
Mikkola - Parayko
Scandella-Peronuvich

Not sure which side he prefers but I want him to play on a top 4 role with a good mentor like Parayko and not third pairing duties with Scandella. Mikkola isn't a top 4 guy anyway.

He played there in college, but I imagine he's on the left in the pros. I don't think any of us really know if he preferred the right or if his college team had more LHD than RHD, and he was just the best one to play on his off-side.

So your solution to fix the defense is to make it worse defensively? The Scandella scapegoating has reached absurd levels.

I know it's convenient to blame him for our struggles, but there is a reason Berube has him out there in as many key defensive situations as possible. Our defensive struggles are a team issue, everyone needs to play better.

Scandella is a good defensive defenseman. He was acquired to replace JBo, to whom he will never hold a candle, and to whom he has very unfairly been compared. He nonetheless, is very underrated in his role.
Respectfully disagree with the bolded. I think he's fairly criticized and his payroll dollars would be better allocated elsewhere. He's heavily leaned on by the coaching staff because there aren't a whole lot of other options; he's simply the best of what we've got which isn't saying a whole lot. Whoopie...he plays more than Walman and gets tougher matchups than Krug. Well duh. He's still a turn-over machine and contributing to our "shut-down pair" getting caved in. If you put Lindholm/Giordano next to Parayko, and move Scandella into Walman's role, you're now badly over-paying for 3rd pairing minutes...those should be going to Perunovich, Mikkola, Bortuzzo or somebody making $1.5M or less.

I want three guys who can play 22+ min comfortably and are good defensively and can move the puck and provide decent offense. I want a PP QB and I want stalwart PK. Then I want replacements who can handle the skills and be thrown in there if needed.

if Scandella were freed up to focus mainly on PK and be that 4/5 guy with Krug then I think the Blues would have a solid playoff defense. The guy they acquire has to be a 22+ min all situations player.

Obviously we are better if we replace Scandella with a better D man. But how do you pay that D-man? Even if the 3rd pairing is making $1.5M or less, we can't replace a $3M D with a $5M+ guy. We could maybe get Lindholm with retention, but how do we afford him next year with his raise? Are we trading assets for a pure rental?

If we acquire and Re-sign a Scandella replacement, where does Perunovich go when if he takes a step up? He's an RFA next year. If he plays well he will earn a higher AAV. If he plays well enough to earn top 4 minutes, who goes? Faulk, Krug, and Parayko all have NTCs for at least 3 more years after this one. Lindholm, or whoever we upgrade over Scandella, probably will as well signing a new contract. So do we jettison a potential stud on a cost controlled deal in Perunovich because there is no room for him?

Scandella is fine as a $3M D. Krug is the one causing problems as he cannot defend a plastic bag someone tossed on the ice. The bag is both too strong and too quick for him. Krug has to be the one to go. We have to find a way to get him to waive. Perunovich can take his place as the PP QB, sheltered offensive D.

Lindholm - Parayko
Scandella - Faulk
Perunovich - Bortuzzo

Scandella and Faulk can help the defensive load a bit, giving the top pair some more offensive zone starts. But in true offensive situations, we can double shift Perunovich with Faulk. Its the only way it works

simple. you trade the guy who asked to be traded.

It’s why some of the people who want to keep Tarasenko for this run figure he would be traded at the draft. The Blues will need the room in 22-23 to pay whichever new top pair D is on the roster.

I lean toward trading him while he’s healthy and productive and while the trade request still stands. We could lose the value he has restored relatively quickly.

I agree with that in principle. But I just think it’s going to be tricky with both trade partners tight to the cap to swing a ‘hockey trade’ mis-season. I think the chances of such a trade materializing before the offseason are slim. It’s like a Dubois for Laine situation. I don’t see Armstrong making the trade for raw value, only for a player that improves the team now.

I think adding the right player for the top pair takes time so it’s all dependent on that market. Armstrong could swing a three way trade where Tarasenko goes east and the Blues get Lindholm or Giordano and everything is balanced appropriately

Clifford traded to Toronto for future considerations.

At least we don’t have to worry about him injuring Sunny’s knee again :sarcasm:

Edit- Also shocked it wasn’t NY since Blais is out for the year

Blues save good chunk of $ by shipping Clifford to Toronto. Not cap space, but actual $ which is nice. Not sure why Leafs dealt for him only to send him to AHL, but glad they did.
