Leaf fan here, short term you guys have a great #3 dman and we were fleeced, long term we got rid of his contract and hopefully we can flip a few of the guys you sent us for more picks on top of the 2nd rounder. Hopefully Dion doesn't ruin the career of any of our young talent, thats about the only way this deal works out bad for the leafs LOL. Enjoy his big open ice hits and hopefully since he will be on the 2nd pairing you won't see many of his gaffs. Good luck in your playoff hunt, try to keep Canada from being skunked out of them this year, you might be our last best chance at making it.

Bishop + Hossa + 9th Overall for Phaneuf

12th overall pick in 1997 + 47th overall pick in 2013 + 9th overall pick in 2009 for Dion Phaneuf. If you REALLY want to trace the trades back to their roots.

(Never mind the fact that we got a solid year out of Bishop and seven out of Hossa. Or that the assets in the Hossa trade paid dividends, too. But you know, do you.)

Leafs fan here. Trust me when I say Dion is not as bad as people say. He was actually a really reliable D man he is just not worth 7m cap hit. I hope he works out for you guys.

OMG. It is like looking at the progression of a Meth addict. Except he is morphing due to criticism not crystal meth. Happy to sad to sad/angry.

We were scratching Cowen. Phaneuf will play 20/22 minutes a game quite well.
And make plenty of gaffes with those minutes. The Sens have a shakey D as it were, am I right?

Well, Phaneuf was at his worst when the Leafs' D was just atrocious. I guess the Sens have a bit more skill on D but I believe the Sens still allow a lot of shots per game.

You guys are getting too giddy too early. You might be surprised and disappointed, imho.

The Leafs made this trade to free up cap room. That's obvious. I don't think they cared much who was coming back. It was to see what they could get of course, but they had to deal with Phaneuf's trading partner list and make a deal when the time is right. It's obvious, the Leafs have a long-range plan and the Sens and Leafs have two drastically different goals for this trade.

But, the Sens might be the more disappointed team. Phaneuf might help in some areas (maybe, he'll hit the net on the PP once in a while) but he's prone to major mistakes in his own zone and still has little hockey sense. But, maybe the new setting in Ottawa will help but I doubt it. GL, though.

Edit: one more thing... if the worse scenario happens, you have a guy that is signed into 2021, I think? The scrubs the Sens traded have their contracts completed next year?

This trade has brought me out of the woodwork to post for the first time in ages. I hated Phaneuf in Calgary for his often cheap style of play, especially for his size and his lack of desire to drop the gloves after he takes liberties with an opposing player. I hated him even more when he went to Toronto because, well, he became a Leaf. That being said, he does play hard, and he's a smart player. Add to the fact that I despise Cowen as a professional hockey player and I'll go ahead and say I approve of this trade even though that contract he carries into town is a little harsh to swallow. Maybe he can convince ownership to go back to the original logo. Someone, someday, has to...

I wonder if Phaneuf will wear #33? With Phaneuf in the lineup Ottawa now has three very good tough defensively responsible left shot defencemen on the left side & three PMD on the right side.

Was it worth getting a #3 defender who will cost us an average of 5 million per year of actual dollars over the remaining term of his contract while dumping 11 million in valueless contracts?
It would have been worth it even if 2nd pairing LD wasn't by FAR the absolute weakest position on our team.

The real money isn't the issue..7 million against the cap for 5 more years is just brutal.

The jersey the Sens twitter posted a picture of was #2.

Was it worth taking on a 7 million dollar #3 damn for 5 years? They were better off keeping Cowen and Michalek for another year for their contracts to expire. The Sens will regret this move in the near future.

Phaneuf is a clear #2.

After next season is over, Toronto will have paid an extra 4.75 M. Spread over the remaining salary, minus that $4.75 we dumped Phaneuf will cost Ottawa an average of $5.2 per year. Is Phaneuf worth $5.2 per year? ... yes.

Phaneuf will be playing behind Karlsson on D and there will be Ryan, Hoffman, Stone, Turris, and to a lesser extent Andy not "ahead" but to lessen the pressure greatly.

Phaneuf will be great here playing with Ceci instead of the #1 D. Even if he does end up playing with Karlsson, EK will take the pressure off.

HAHAHA, that's funny. You actually think we have a chance of being a Cap ceiling team any time soon, and thus give a flying **** about cap hits? We are an "actual salary" organization. A "high-cap/low-actual-dollars" player is like a dream come true for us.

Chum, you know two things about the Sens.

1) Jack.
2) ****.

Has anyone looked at the money involved in the deal?
I actually don't know what all the contracts look like involved.

This deal is awesome financially

As much as Phaneuf makes too much I'd much rather pay him too much and get a guy to play top 4 than have Cowen sitting in the box at 3.7mil and greening in the ahl at 2.75 mil.

Cowen cap hit was 3.1 (4.5 salary next year though) Greening cap hit was 2.65 (3.2 salary next year though)

I don't want to see Milo playing in the blue and white... hope they flip him to a playoff team

Same. Michalek is the guy I'll miss the most.

Im guessing you haven't seen our bottom 6

Pageau, Prince, Smith, Puempel/Dzingel/McCormick,.... it is solid... But Neil and Chiasson are crap, amirite?

Our bottom-6 only looked bad because MacArthur and Michalek have been injured...

As an outsider, what the heck is Ottawa thinking?

Getting a #2-3 D-man for spare parts?

win win trade. Leafs are tearing it down, we are building a competitive roster. I just worry that we may be too late for this year. We'll see.

A win tomorrow would be helpful.

The "Tank" thread is just like you and 6 other posters constantly patting yourselves on the back, so don't be so surprised that you are in the minority.
Excuse me (and the other 6) for having it with the team doimg NOTHING to improve for the future and watching us finish 8th every year and hardly ever getting a good pick.

But yeah no let's go to the playoffs and lose in 5 again and again and again

Not too worried about Phaneuf replacing Cowen/Wiercioch/Borowiecki as our 2nd pair LD. At all.

Their is no chance whatsoever he isn't much, much, much better then those three. At ES, PP or PK. At offence or defence.

Slots our defence properly.

But since you are trolling... You just traded one of your best players for little proven assets or top prospects. Same with Kessel. So if this rebuild doesn't work the Leafs could be terribly bad for years and years and never get better.

Karlsson, Stone, Hoffman, Turris, Zibanejad, Ryan, Methot, Phaneuf, Ceci, Anderson.

What's the Leafs core? Kadri, JVR and Rielly and wishes and dreams?
