I've seen declining salary mentioned multiple times here.. but General Fanager has Phaneuf getting signing bonuses every year that make up for the difference in his salary dollars dropping.

Basically Phaneuf got $8 mil + $2 mil signing bonus this year.

Next year: $7.5mil + $1 mil signing bonus. = $8.5 million real dollars
2017-18: $7 mil + $1 mil signing bonus = $8 million real dollars
2018-2019: $6.5 mil + $1 mil signing bonus = $7.5 million real dollars
2019-2020: $6.5 mil + $1 mil signing bonus = $7.5 million real dollars
2020-2021 : $5.5 mil + $2.5 mil signing bonus = $ 8 million real dollars

I mean, as the cap goes up that 7 million cap hit becomes proportionately less of the cap, but the actual dollar amount stays the same.

Uncle Euge has opened up the wallet here.

Are the bonuses conditioned on h im playing well though?

Lindberg was a secondary prospect, losing him doesn't hurt us much.

Paul
Puempel
Prince
White
Chlapik
Gagne
Perron

Are all forwards whom were likely viewed higher than Lindberg by the organization.,

You also have to give to get. Phaneuf is a good player. The Leafs added $4 million in salary next season - not every team would be willing to do that.

Adding a top 4 defenceman usually costs a top prospect. I think Lindberg is a good prospect but if he's not a top prospect you have to be willing to move him in this type of deal.

Lindberg and the pick are the upside for the Leafs. Maybe Cowen if you believe he has real upside.

This deal may turn out to be Phaneuf for Lindberg and a pick. That's a good deal.

Taking on a brutal long term contract for a mediocre player? Check

His "cap hit" with us (actual salary owed to him by our ownership) is ~$6.6mil per year, because his contract was front-loaded with high-salary years and signing bonuses in his first two seasons paid by the Leafs.

And this contract only takes him to his 36-year old season. It's not like this is some Roberto Luongo cap-circumvention contract that takes him to like 45 years old.

You're drinking the bad Kool-Ade, mate. Come over to our side, we've got the good flavours.

Was it worth taking on a 7 million dollar #3 damn for 5 years? They were better off keeping Cowen and Michalek for another year for their contracts to expire. The Sens will regret this move in the near future.

Toronto paid 2M out of his 8M salary as a signing bonus already this season. So Ottawa acquired (prorated) 6M in salary this season while moving out almost 10M of players who weren't playing (Injuries for Michalek, scratch for Cowen, AHL for Greening).

Phaneuf is owed an average salary of 6.4M from next season onwards.

For next season, Ottawa shed almost 8 million of salary between Cowen and Greening, along with another 4 million in Michalek. Michalek's replacement will likely be from within, so that only costs about 600k-800k.

Phaneuf is owed 32 million dollars over the remainder of his deal, when you account for the 11M saved from all the dead space out, that is only 21M for Phaneuf.

The trade makes a lot of sense for Ottawa. They took a bunch of dead money that they weren't using and turned it into a player who they'll use. Yes, Phaneuf is probably overpaid, but Ottawa was already spending a huge chunk of that money on almost nothing.

Lol, I guess we're just going to ignore the $10 million+ per season that went the other way with Cowen, Michalek, and Greening?

Yes, it's a long term commitment, but the only way it happened was by shedding multiple other bad contracts (to varying degrees), all of which Murray signed.

No we aren't.

After those contracts have expired, they have opened up the wallet, as their replacements will cost money in the next few years.

Prince-Lazar-Neil
Dzingel/Puempel

Methot-Karlsson
Phaneuf-Ceci
Wiercioch-Boro

Well, I kinda predicted that at 11:08

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showpost.php?p=113452099&postcount=11

In that post I am talking about that Phaneuf would cost 6.375 to the Sens for the last 4 years of his contract (we probably won't face the cap so salary (the cap hit for the 4 last years) is what matters for the Sens)

Next year :

Cowen : 4.5
Greening : 3.2
Michalek : 4.0
Phaneuf : 7.5

Sens save 4.2 minus 2 players (like Paul or Dzingel) who will be cheap and replace Michalek and Greening.

Then, Phaneuf will be at 6.375 per year for 4 seasons.

OVERALL, Phaneuf will cost 33 millions for the Sens in the last 5 years of his contract, but we moved 11.7 millions, which will easily be replaced with 1.7 millions.

So about 23 millions for 5 years (average of 4.6) of Phaneuf :amazed:

Now about the other pieces the Sens acquired, I only see Bailey as significant :

- Casey Bailey : 24 y/o, late bloomer, was a sought after College UFA last season. I like his talent Analysis :

Bailey is a big power forward who likes to shoot the puck. He has great vision and is good at getting into the soft spots of a defense's coverage. He is strong on the puck and skates with speed and strength. The epitome of a "late bloomer" he competes at a high level and enjoys playing in tight spaces. He will likely require some time to adapt to the higher skill level and faster, stronger players in pro hockey.

- Matt Frattin, Ryan Rupert and Cody Donaghey : to help our Bingo present and future

We just dumped so much dead weight in one deal

Murray haters have a big reason to love him all of sudden

And I wonder who will be the scapegoats now... Phillips is done injured, Cowen, Michalek and Greening are gone... Who's left? Neil and Chiasson? lol

Need more scapegoats asap

If he adds Phaneuf's salary to our existing mid 60 million payroll then yes, he opened the wallet.

If the budget stays the same after all the parts are moved in and out, then Melnyk didn't open the wallet.

Overall spend is what matters, not how it is distributed.

No, this isn't how that works.

Signing bonuses are part of a player's cap hit and salary, NOT IN ADDITION TO IT.

Phaneuf's 2016/18 salary is still $7mil... it's just $6mil paid out during the season, and a $1mil bonus paid up front at the beginning of the season.

The rest of the years are like that as well. His 2018/19 salary is $5.5 + $1mil bonus. His 2020/21 salary is $3mil + $2.5mil bonus.

The CBA prohibits salary bonuses outside of cap hits.

No we aren't.

After those contracts have expired, they have opened up the wallet, as their replacements will cost money in the next few years.

They will, but ideally it'll be guys like White and Chabot, still on their entry level deals. By the time those guys are in line for realy big raises, Phaneuf's salary will have gone down a bit, or his contract will be up.

The bottom line is we converted $$$ tied to players we weren't using to an overpaid player that's the perfect fit for us. If you account the money tied up that were useless to us (Cowen, Greening, lesser extent Michalek), Phaneuf isn't so overpaid anymore.

Hello I'm a pretty neutral fan. I'm curious, how do you feel about the value of this trade? Do you guys think Phaneuf will thrive on the 2nd pair? Will you miss Michalek? Is Lindberg a strong prospect? Can Cowen's career get revived?

I hope this helps you go far in this year's playoffs.

Apparently, Mike Babcock thinks the world of Phaneuf. Can't say enough good things about his leadership, workout & training habits, professionalism, skill... the whole package.

Also... has it sunk in for anyone else that (injuries notwithstanding, knock on wood), we never have to see Wiercioch or Cowen or Borowiecki play on the 2nd pairing anymore? Just that one thought is my happy place right now.
AMEN:handclap:

It's actually $11.7 mil going out the door & all three (Michalek, Greening & Cowen) are under contract for next season. This is a huge deal for Ottawa considering it frees up money for next season to sign Hoffman & the RFAs who need contracts for next season including Ceci. There should also be enough money to go after a decent UFA forward if they think they can't fill a spot internally.
