Part of this trade is the first overall pick. Which Toronto will have a very good chance at. Phaneuf could be party standing in the way of that.

Funny on the leafs forum, a guy posted that some say lindberg was our best prospect ahead of even Colin white! They are running with that.

They also think Cowen is the next Chara.

Lindberg was a secondary prospect, losing him doesn't hurt us much.

Are all forwards whom were likely viewed higher than Lindberg by the organization.,

This trade is surreal.

I happened to have the local news on in the background and saw it first that way. Any trade with Greening, Cowen, (and to a lesser extent) Michalek's pictures all on the screen at the same time is very hard to believe.

Cowen still has some (minimal) value and could maybe bounce back in Toronto considering their high level of coaching, but simplified, this trade is a 2nd round pick and Lindberg for Phaneuf.

When you consider the amount of dollars Ottawa shed by dumping the three players they did, it almost pays for the next two years of Phaneauf's contract after this season.

Really crazy trade.

Exactly. People don't comprehend this enough. He fits every category we were hoping to fill.

We basically got the perfect number 3 defender. The only that I don't like about Phaneuf is his occasion "WOW WTF" move but hey.... Cowen does that every game without all the benefits Phaneuf provides so Im good.

I like that he brings a physical dimension to the second pairing AND being able to play ok defense. He can hit and fight when needed. Hopefully he can provide enough stability on the second pairing to see if Ceci can progress.

From the amount of money saved from the contracts we dumped in Greening and Cowen + Phaneuf having a front heavy deal, having Phaneuf for 5 more years is fair value to us

Taking on a brutal long term contract for a mediocre player? Check

Leafs just guaranteed they'll get Stamkos and increased their odds of landing Matthews in the summer. IMO leafs like the trade and the Sens still have no shot at a cup.

Was it worth taking on a 7 million dollar #3 damn for 5 years? They were better off keeping Cowen and Michalek for another year for their contracts to expire. The Sens will regret this move in the near future.

Honestly, while Phaneuf will be on the 2nd pairing, he's probably now the team's 2nd best D behind only Karlsson. It is expensive, but Phaneuf is a solid player, and won't have the same spotlight on him that he had in Toronto.

And Michalek and Cowen? The former is an okay 3rd liner at best these days and doesn't have anywhere near the speed and agility he once had, and Cowen...honestly, he wasn't going to work out here. Best to at least get something for him, and what we got was someone who shores up the D for the next few years, thus allowing Chabot to properly develop.

I am so stocked by this trade.

I NEVER thought it would happen but I was vocal about the fact that Phaneuf was a perfect target for us and he went for even cheaper than I thought.

Wow.

As pointed out, in terms of actual dollars its closer to a 6M 2/3 guy. Basically when Methot's hurt, he probably plays with Karlsson... when Methot is healthy he plays with Ceci.

And maybe Karlsson can get back down to *only* 27 minutes a night.

Plus on the PP, we have someone who can actually scare shot blockers yeah? We always just feather passes around to try to shift the D to open a hole for a wrister from Hoffman or Karlsson.

Now we might have a slapshot option! Even if it does go off the glass a few times, we can just have JGP grab it kick it over to someone.

I've seen declining salary mentioned multiple times here.. but General Fanager has Phaneuf getting signing bonuses every year that make up for the difference in his salary dollars dropping.

Basically Phaneuf got $8 mil + $2 mil signing bonus this year.

Next year: $7.5mil + $1 mil signing bonus. = $8.5 million real dollars
2017-18: $7 mil + $1 mil signing bonus = $8 million real dollars
2018-2019: $6.5 mil + $1 mil signing bonus = $7.5 million real dollars
2019-2020: $6.5 mil + $1 mil signing bonus = $7.5 million real dollars
2020-2021 : $5.5 mil + $2.5 mil signing bonus = $ 8 million real dollars

I mean, as the cap goes up that 7 million cap hit becomes proportionately less of the cap, but the actual dollar amount stays the same.

Uncle Euge has opened up the wallet here.

From a poster in the main boards:

Subtract 15 million (cash value in contracts that Ottawa dumped), from 35 million that Dion is owed in cash until the end of 20-21.

Take that figure (20mil) & divide it by 4 (#of years Ottawa carries Dion after the MM/CG/JC contracts expire).

You get 5mil. That is what Dion will cost Ottawa for each of the last 4 years of his contract.
