Look dion is 30 years old
Don't worry about his contract 5 years from now
Dion is a workout monster
He will give you 20/22 minutes a night
40 points a year
An absolute bomb from the point on the pp
He is probably the best open ice hitter in the league
Don't listen to the bad mouthing a few leafs fans will tell you
Will he make mistakes of course
EK makes mistakes
Anybody playing that many minutes against quality competition will

In my opinion you stole him

Love this post. I'm pumped. I'm not expecting a star in return, but just a guy who can anchor the second pairing. Getting that in return for cap dumps, Lindberg and Michalek (who I've been a huge supporter of) is fine by me.

In the last two major trades the Leafs made, they jettisoned the two most overrated players in the NHL: Kessel and Phaneuf.

What in the world was Ottawa thinking? Phaneuf will not help the Senators. Good luck Sens. You're going to need it.

THEY ALSO TRADED DAVID CLARKSON. I mean that front office, whoa. Dumping three immovable contracts in a year?

This is a good trade! Yay Murray! We get a solid Top4D and a handful of prospects, we leave Lindberg behind (bad :( ) but dump some terrible contracts. And the Leafs get a TONS of capspace.

I was just going to ask what number Phaneuf will take here in Ottawa, seeing as how Methot wears #3.

This is exactly like what happened when we traded Rundblad for Turris - new player comes in and takes the old guy's number. Perfect for fan(s?) who own a Cowen jersey, now they just have to replace a nameplate instead of the whole thing.

Yes, the lineup will be literally some people deep.

I still can't believe Murray managed to pull this off.

Everything we were looking for in a number 3 defender Murray just managed to get him.

Methot-Karlsson
Phaneuf-Ceci

That's a beautiful top 4. Especially once we see Phaneuf play in an environment where he isnt thrown to the wolves.

HFSens posters yesterday: "Why is everyone complaining that the budget is the problem when we've sunk so much money into plugs like Cowen, Greening and Michalek, and we could be using that money on a legit #2 defenceman who plays the left side?!?"

HFSens posters today: "I... uh... Hm. Ok then."

Hahahaha, this is so on-the-head. It's that ******* genie in a bottle that gives you exactly what you wanted in a way you didn't expect. Some monkey's paw ****. But after chilling out a bit I'm ready to move on. I just have a dislike for Phaneuf but potentially this could do what it's supposed to do.

Biggest minus is there's no longer any Czech player on this team. Every team needs a Czech player to keep things lighthearted, down-to-earth but also focused

Phaneuf is a guy I loved to hate but omg our defense looks infinitely better.

Methot - Karlsson
Phaneuf - Ceci
Wiercioch - Wideman
Boro

So happy we don't have to play Karlsson with a scrub half the time.

Guys this is absolutely spectacular news.

We literally the get the perfect number 3 defender we've been looking for to play alongside Ceci.

Phaneuf hits, can score a lot of points, is a veteran, can play 2 way, is left shot and has mobility and can PK. Literally the perfect defender we were looking for. We gave up junk for him. This is unbelievable.

Check out this graph:

http://www.hockeyabstract.com/playerusagecharts

It basically says in a lesser role(than being the number 1) he has thrived tremendously and has been a great defender while also putting up most points on Leaf blueline.

I absolutely love this deal. Phaneuf can make boneheaded moves sometimes but is the perfect guy to have as number 3. Methot and Karlsson will keep him in line.

Most importantly, he'll be solid for another 3 years and after that Chabot will be more than ready to step in so we're set for the future. The only concern is moving Phaneuf when he's dirt but boys... we have 3+ years to worry about that.

I can not believe we managed to rid ourselves of Greening, Michalek and Cowen all at once.

I think if this was any other defenceman traded for this package people would be more excited. But no one plays under a bigger microscope then Phaneuf. (Doesn't help that we've all built up a bit of hate towards the guy). This is a great deal for us and really shores up a huge need.

Maybe in a year or two?

I can't think of a single time in my 35+ years as a hockey fan where a guy got traded to a new team and had a letter waiting for him upon his arrival.

Messier? Became captain of NYR if I recall.

Yeah that's a big reason why I wanted Phaneuf. Guy has been forced to be the #1 defenseman of an awful team for a long time, and has actually been respectable in that role. Put him on the 2nd pair in Ottawa and watch him shine.

OUTSTANDING!
Good lord this is possibly the perfect deal for us.
Our absolute weakest position on the team which in turn affects so many others.
5 on 5 play,PP, PK, waaaaay better slotting, dumped all of our bad/no longer need contracts, chabot can now be nicely eased in over the next couple of years.
We didn't have to give up chabot, white our first or a roster player to pick up a legit #3 Dman

Simply amazing.

Amen brother! Exactly where I'm at.
Not concerned at all about these silly notions that it's easier to better in free agency. We've seen time and again that it isn't.

Phaneuf in the lineup allows us to not rush Chabot's move to the NHL.

I could have seen Chabot come up to the NHL next year because of how bad our LD depth is but now he can take a year in the minors. Maybe even 2.
