No, this isn't how that works.

Signing bonuses are part of a player's cap hit and salary, NOT IN ADDITION TO IT.

Phaneuf's 2016/18 salary is still $7mil... it's just $6mil paid out during the season, and a $1mil bonus paid up front at the beginning of the season.

The rest of the years are like that as well. His 2018/19 salary is $5.5 + $1mil bonus. His 2020/21 salary is $3mil + $2.5mil bonus.

The CBA prohibits salary bonuses outside of cap hits.

Sweet.

TIL cap stuff.

I recant everything I said, I'm ignorant.

So a fully healthy lineup:

Hoffman-Turris-Ryan
Smith-Pageau-Stone
MacArthur-Zibanejad-Chiasson
Prince-Lazar-Neil
Dzingel/Puempel

Methot-Karlsson
Phaneuf-Ceci
Wiercioch-Boro
Wideman

Not bad.

So Pageau is now our full time second line center?

Leaf fans seem pretty ecstatic.

They love the cap space this will create down the road.

They love that they've increased their chances of drafting Matthews or one of the Finns.

They trust their management teams' assessment of Tobias Lindberg. They scouted him hard and believe he's the real deal.

They're happy to see Cowen, Greening and Michalek coming off the books after next season. They may even get a pick for Michalek at the deadline. They'll try to turn Cowens' gamr around. If they can't....,well no bigggie.

They're quite pleased to pick up a second rounder from a bad team.

They're hoping Ottawa winds up in a worse draft position in a great draft year. Echoes of the Campoli trade for me.

Some, but not all, are just really thrilled to see the end of Phaneuf.

Should we expect to see Matt Frattin seeing any time with the big club?..

Possible, but it seems that guy has regressed right out of the league. His AHL totals aren't really that impressive.

Thanks for addressing this. I was going to but started developing an eye twitch while thinking of a polite response.

Hello I'm a pretty neutral fan. I'm curious, how do you feel about the value of this trade? Do you guys think Phaneuf will thrive on the 2nd pair? Will you miss Michalek? Is Lindberg a strong prospect? Can Cowen's career get revived?

I hope this helps you go far in this year's playoffs.

Phaneuf's actually been doing relatively well sheltered in Toronto on the 2nd pairing by Babcock. Pretty sure here where he's got less of the baggage, and none of the spotlight, it'll work out exactly to be what both he and the team need.
Michalek, when healthy will be missed. Though right now it's looking like we might be on the upswing with kids filling his role.
Lingberg as mentioned, is likely to be a middle 6 NHL winger. Right now he looks to be a good player on a terrible AHL team as a first year pro.
Cowen to me is the big X-factor in this deal. Does the Toronto coaching staff have the secret to unlock Cowen's play? Or do they just use him to flip another deal due to his cap bonus buyout situation.

I feel like Frattin/Greening are just like for like swaps.

No we aren't.

After those contracts have expired, they have opened up the wallet, as their replacements will cost money in the next few years.

I think the signing bonus numbers are included in the salary numbers.

My rationale for believing this is that cap hit is based of the total value of the contract including signing bonus. When you sum the declining salary listed on general fanager, it comes to 49 mil over 7 years, 7 mil per year, which is his cap hit. if you added the signing bonus, you'd get a cap hit of roughly 8.5 mil per.

edit: Looks like Bonk beat me to it,

Either way, the contract is actually pretty good for us.

Bishop + Hossa + 9th Overall for Phaneuf

A trade should be treated as a sunk cost. If the deal is a bad one, it's bad. Same thing as a good trade.

I can't even remember all the deals you are combining to make that trade but it's a stupid exercise.

The Bishop deal stands on it's own, as does the Hossa deal and so will the Phaneuf deal.

Do you guys think Phaneuf will thrive on the 2nd pair?

Very much so, yes.

Will you miss Michalek?

We'll miss a lot of the little things he does in a game that really helps but casual fans tend to miss. He was a bit overpaid for what he brought, though. Still the kind of player almost any team loves to have on their 3rd line, but he hasn't been able to stay very healthy over the past while, and his offensive touch is amongst the streakiest in the league, so that has to be taken into account.

Is Lindberg a strong prospect?

He's a good B-prospect. Not a blue-chipper, but a guy who you can see carve out a nice little career as an NHLer assuming everything goes to plan.

Can Cowen's career get revived?

He needs a completely new approach to hockey. If Babcock can teach him to actually listen to coaches, then maybe he can salvage his career and become a passable #4/5 defenceman. He's not even close to NHL quality right now, though. Injuries have killed all of his mobility. He can't pivot worth a damned anymore. And he tries to do everything himself, and doesn't have the skill to pull it off. His hips and one knee are shot. I am not confident.

I saw the headline and was like please dear Lord don't let us have traded Hoffman. This was a great deal even if Dion is overpaid.

Was it worth taking on a 7 million dollar #3 damn for 5 years? They were better off keeping Cowen and Michalek for another year for their contracts to expire. The Sens will regret this move in the near future.

Was it worth getting a #3 defender who will cost us an average of 5 million per year of actual dollars over the remaining term of his contract while dumping 11 million in valueless contracts?
It would have been worth it even if 2nd pairing LD wasn't by FAR the absolute weakest position on our team.

When you break it down like that it sure seems like a shrewd move.

Leaf fan coming in peace. This pretty much nails it from our perspective, for me less hate for Dion than many, but saw him in an unfortunate position in Toronto. Good luck for the rest of the season and have a bad one next year :sarcasm: that 2nd...well, we want the best we can get ;)

Having read most of this thread I get the feeling many here think Lindberg's got upside, but by no means elite. I'm wondering if you can fill me in on his weaknesses/what he needs to work on.
