Yeah, that doesn’t seem right at all.

Aren’t Volton and Wood on IR? That’s 6.5M right there
Damnit..you're right.

Still...I thought RosCo was off LTIR, and capwages still shows him there and are treating him as LTIR.

Have I mentioned that I miss capfriendly lately? Why can't any other website operate as efficiently as they did?

I don't love it from an asset management perspective. The two moves together boil down to:

Georgieve
Annunen
Kovalenko
2nd
6th

For

Blackwood
Wedgewood
G. Smith

which at least one of those positions could have been filled by signing Lankinen in the offseason and waiving Annunen - if he gets picked up, at least you still have your 6th. Plus, Lankinen playing steady doesn't put the Georgiev deal in such an act of desperation, and you can probably still pull of the Blackwood deal without Kovalenko,

I know people are saying Kovalenko isn't a big loss, and maybe not for this season or next, but he's young, cheap depth with upside that can really come in handy when injuries hit. Having G. Smith or Wagner on the depth chart when healthy is not good.

That being said, it's an improvement both on the ice and in the room. I think the vibe change alone from Annunen -> Wedgewood and subtracting Georgiev is going to spark this team mentally. I think often analytics folks and fans alike really underestimate the power of group dynamics when building a successful team. I bet Mikko was holding out on his extension until Georgiev was moved 😅

All in all, I think it's a net positive. I just think losing Kovy is going to hurt more in the long run than people might want to admit and if CMac was a little more proactive he could have saved some valuable assets.

The biggest thing for me is despite his inconsistency and injury history, Blackwood has the ability to steal games. Georgiev hasn't had that ability since his first season here. It was pure garbage or acceptable goaltending, he was never going to be the sole reason we won a game, and that's something any contender needs.

Ok so this past summer Avs management needed to know that :

Annunen and his .928 sv% in 14 games played from last season - was completely inadequate to be the backup this up coming year AND that Kevin Lankinen and his .908 sv% in 24 games played from last year with Nashville was an aberration and in fact, he could easily take over starting duties and do well as his 1 year - $875K UFA contract with the Canucks can attest.

Sounds pretty easy after the fact but I don't remember too many Avs fans during free agency pounding the table to get rid of our back-up and pickup Kevin Lankinen.

I wonder if they have next contract already on table for Blackwood?

The price was high, so why not sign him now?
The last time we acquired a Shark and just straight-up signed him before he played a single game, that worked out great ! :sarcasm:

I think Wedgie and Blackie’s positive vibes and having played together before will be a great thing for our team.

Type of guys you want to battle for and instantly win over a room.

I don't like the trade. I hope Blackwood changes my mind.

Going into the playoffs (if we make it) with this tandem is a choice.

I think we need to free up at least $2.5m to activate Landeskog with a fully healthy lineup (which granted, we almost never see; so one of our IR regulars like Wood or JD might solve alone the problem IF Landeskog is ever activated). The below is a 22 man roster $2,496,000 over the cap (and does take into account the retained money on Georgiev):

I'm at work, so I can't read the whole thread, but this seems like a pretty fair trade value wise. The downgrade from Kovalenko to Smith is about equal to the upgrade from Georgiev to Blackwood.

Blackwood isn't perfect, but at the very least he changes the dynamic of the team in their relationship to their goaltending. Fresh start, clean slate. Maybe Blackwood isn't going to be great, but at least he doesn't have a recent history of blowing games by himself back there. The whole team can just hit the reset button hopefully.

Mackenzie Blackwood looks GREAT. He's literally shelled almost every night, behind a pretty poor team. I'm all over this trade.

And not going to lie, I actually love Givani Smith. Guys youg(ish) and can throw the mits mannnn

Cmac should work at Hogwarts - his amazing recruitment is pure wizardry

Yeah, I'm thinking the best thing to do is to keep Landy out until the playoffs begin and use every single penny available between now and then on fixing up the team.

That way if/when Landy joins in the spring, it'll be a huge boost (emotionally at least even if his skills are rusty as shit) to a team that is already using its full cap space. This is our once chance to Las Vegas our way through a season and we really should be planning on doing just that. Find a private rink in Arkansas and have Gabe go there and just skate as hard as he can until the playoffs start, then bring him back.
