They were negotiating with him, but they made the trade knowing they would get at least a 2nd rounder back. In those days you had a wait a full season after your senior year to become a UFA.

Ohhh, okay. I never realized they knew they probably wouldn't sign him, I thought we had been snubbed or something. That was 2004 right I wonder if we used that pick to take Dubinsky. All I remember is Sather unloaded absolutely everyone for draft picks and prospects except for the Carter for Jagr deal. What did we get out of that retool/rebuild aside from Dubinsky and Callahan???

He is a good hockey player. The Traverse Tournament is pretty good, Erixon was a man among boys in that tournament.

Traverse is closest to ECHL in its level of hockey. More talent, but less experience. Parlett also dominated in Traverse and that's because he's a quality AHLer. You don't need to be an NHLer to dominate Traverse.

I thought the Rangers acquired Umberger for the sole purpose of not signing him, and instead getting the 2nd round comp pick because he was a former 1st rounder.

Correct.

Journalists keep repeating that he couldn't come to terms with the Rangers, but it's false. The very first day we got him, our management said they have no intention of signing him.

@krufrank: Apparently it was the NYR who offered Kevin Hayes a pretty good deal. Good enough to make him want to sleep on it. COL/BOS/NYR left standing

Dont know how credible he is. Looking at his twitter it seems as though he just retweets info he finds. Not sure if he is a reporter of some sort.

With the great purge of 04 the Rangers were loaded with picks and added several prospects. All the prospects busted and relative to the volume, the draft turned out to be quite average. Add in the busts of 03 and poor turnout of the 02 draft and it's pretty clear that the Rangers are a lot better off with Clark, Schoenfeld, and later Gorton over Player Personnel and Development.

So yet another night of sleep? Make up your mind, kid, and let's be done with this mess.

If I'm this kid I see Stanley Cup Finalist

original six

New York City

My buddy kreids

East coast

And like zero prospects ahead of him prob worst prospect pool in the league right now. Easy to make this team soon and be on a winner.

And a lot of NCAA kids in the rangers lineup.

Its not so much about the money since its all the same. Its about the other factors.

Well I wouldn't care about that if I didn't know them.

I'd look at opportunity. What's Boston's prospect pool look like? Or how bout all those kids in Colorado?

I'm an east coast kid so they'd be out for me.

Be between boston and NY for me if I'm him. Which lineup can I crack easier?

Rangers have no A plus prospects close outside of miller and they've got guys hitting UFA next summer. No brainer for me

He just left Chicago.....

I don't think Parletts performance at Traverse was comparable to Erixon. Erixon owned the play at that level, completely controlled the play. Parletts made a few plays that some kids on a message board picked up on.

Of course a big difference between top guys and the lower level in that tournament. I don't follow what you mean by comparing a youth tournament with a crappy pro league? The U20 WJC must be much closer.

How good could it be? We all have the same ceiling to offer no?

Yes, but some teams might be willing to offer more bonuses than others. Also, they could be offering more in terms of playing time. It's not the Rangers style, but maybe they promised him a minimum number of games.

Where? LW?

Again a no brainer not to add him to the prospect pool. A yr in CT then he could make the team . Maybe he steals a spot in camp if signed but I doubt it

Where? LW?

Maybe. He supposedly can play LW or RW. Somewhere in the bottom 6.

Like I said, it isn't the Rangers' style to offer players guaranteed playing time, but what if they said "We'll give you a minimum of 20 games", or something like that. 20 games is 1/4 of the season. I'm sure he wouldn't mind a guarantee of earning at least 1/4 of his NHL salary.

Another team might be willing to give him max bonuses, but those are meaningless if he doesn't earn them, and he won't earn them in the AHL. Playing time is really the only currency these teams can use to up the ante.

He just left Chicago.....

This keeps getting repeated when people say he might be interested in being on a winning team...

It is my understanding that he wasn't leaving Chicago because of anything other than that their NHL lineup would be hard to crack in the next season or two, and he wanted a shot at the big league. I don't buy that Chicago, with their cap issues, didn't offer him the max they could on ELC in order to try to retain a cheap, cost controlled prospect. This isn't about the dollars. (EDIT: Well, at least in terms of the offers - obviously there is a difference if he plays in the AHL vs. NHL on these contracts).

And if the recent rumor mill is true that he eliminated Calgary and Florida from his list, it sure seems like he's targeting teams that have the potential to be at the top of the league over the next few seasons (Boston, Colorado, Pittsburgh, NYR) and cutting out the bottom dwellers. The difference between Chicago and those teams are in the prospect/winger pool and his potential to break the lineup in the near future.
