He won't sign here and I won't be even a bit sad when it happens. Still think he's got bust written all over him.

I think he can be a nice piece to have in the top 9 BUT i dont think he will be a bigtime player or anything. Not a big loss if we dont get him.

I don't know what this kid will become or if he will even play in the NHL

But you guys are kidding your self if u say you wouldn't be upset if we didn't sign him , he is exactly what this organization needs ( size, left winger ) and will replace our first round pick we seem to just throw into every deal

I'm not going to be that upset if we don't end up signing Hayes, but a free asset would be awesome. If he busts, it only cost an ELC. If he ends up being a NHLer, we just got a cost-controlled young player free of charge. There's little-to-no downside to signing Hayes.

When people say "they wont be upset" thats not really a knock on hayes. Most would love to get a 1st round pick on a ELC but its not the end of the world if we dont get him

Exactly.

Hayes at least has as good of a chance at making the Rangers out of training camp as any of our other prospects including Miller who I think has the best chance of all. Rangers could use Hayes' size as well. We are a small team at forward. I see him fitting in. Do I see him as a legit 1st line forward in the future?-not really--but he has good potential to be a top 6. It won't cost us much so why not? He would be an excellent addition and make up for some of the high draft picks we've traded.

Teams are interested in Hayes because he doesn't require compensation to acquire. Its no different than the other college hockey free agents. Teams fight over a handful of players every spring. Hayes will play in the NHL. He is a big body. Is he a top six NHL forward? Not likely. Hayes could play in the bottom six and potentially move up. The NHL has changed. The Rangers like to play a four line game with all of the players being able to skate. Even the Bruins are going away from their line with Thornton because he can't skate anymore. I saw him at BC for most of his two first years when Kreider played there. Hayes was good. Not great. I would watch BC the last couple of years. Hayes was good. Not great. Hayes would be asset to the Rangers because of his size.

RB- Agreed. And Hayes have more smarts in terms of working off his linemates than Boyle for example had.

Remember when everyone was clamoring to sign Tim Erixon?

you know, that soft little spoiled puke who sucked at hockey?

yeah... I'm indifferent on this guy and not a fan of guys that won't sign with the team that drafted them.

Tim Erixon may not have become the player we had hoped, but he certainly added value to the organization as a trade piece.

I'm sure it would leave a bad taste in my mouth if one of our prospects pulled this, but the amount of vitriol in this post is ridiculous.

This isn't some loophole in the CBA. This is in there purposely. Hayes is just exercising his rights within the CBA, which he is absolutely entitled to do. Teams make business decisions with players all the time (RFA contract strong-arming), and nobody feels sorry for the player. Yet, once the player makes a business decision such as a holdout or the college UFA route, people rush to crucify them. It's quite ludicrous.

I just never saw what the allure was with Erixon.

I love vitriol. I really know nothing about Hayes, it was just a nice chance to bash Erixon some more.

Given time some Rangers prospect is going to do what Hayes has done. A CHL player can refuse to sign with his drafting team and eventually become a free agent as well. It's what it is and whatever morality there is on the issue is subjective to the individual viewer. Events will move on with or without his/her being aggrieved. There is no morality involved winning a Stanley Cup--you make moves that you intuit will put you closer to it whenever you can. Signing Hayes would do that.

He is a good hockey player. The Traverse Tournament is pretty good, Erixon was a man among boys in that tournament. He had one of the best performance ever by our prospects there.

But I mean, I have talked about this before, Erixon is a top 2 pairing LD. Right. Look around the league, how many of those spots are open right now?

Its the same thing with MDZ. MDZ is IMHO still the same player he was a couple of years ago that played perfectly well for us in a No 3 role on a 2nd pairing when Staal was out, he hasn't fallen off a cliff or something. But there are no room for a player like him that just has been "decent" for awhile, while also struggling playing his game on RD or a low minute 3rd pairing role.

I mean just look around the league, who is the "worst" 2nd paring LD?

CBJ last year had Jack Johnson playing a ton, Nikitin who played well, Toots, and Ryan Murray who is a 2nd overall pick. Four guys who all are going to get consideration at LD.

LD depth around the league:

ANA- Fowler, Lindholm, Beuchemin, Sbisa, Fistric and Bryan Allen (all LDs)

AZ- Yandle, OEL, Klesla (all LDs)

Boston- Chara, Seidenberg, Mezaros, Krug (all LDs)

Buffalo- Ehrhoff, Tallinder, Zadorov (all LDs)

Calgary has one right shooting D on the roster. 1 of 12 Ds that played last year shoots right. Their LDs kind of suck, but they have 11 of them.

Carolina- Sekera (44 pts), Hainsey, Harrison and JML (all LDs)

Chi- Keith, Hjalmarsson, Oduya and Leddy (all LDs)

Col- Holden, Hejda and Benoit (all LDs)

Dal- Goligoski (42 pts), Gonchar, Daley, Oleksiak among others (all LDs)

Det- Kronwall, DeKeyser, Ericsson, Quincey among others

EDM- All suck.

FLA- Campbell, Kulikov

LA- Great D fits for DD and Voynov

Minny- Suter, Brodin, Ballard, Scandella, Stoner and co.

MTL- Markov, Emelin, Boullion, Tinordi, Gorges and co.

NSH- Josi and then they have a few holes.

And you get my point, it just goes on and on and on.

Besides the 2-3 rebuilding teams, almost all teams are stacked at LD. No openings whatsoever, and its also common with teams that have way too many LDs as opposed to RDs and are forced to move guys out of their position. And D's playing the wrong side is really a handicap in this league right now.

Its not easy for a young LD that should get top 4 minutes to get into the league right now...

I thought the Rangers acquired Umberger for the sole purpose of not signing him, and instead getting the 2nd round comp pick because he was a former 1st rounder.
They were negotiating with him, but they made the trade knowing they would get at least a 2nd rounder back. In those days you had a wait a full season after your senior year to become a UFA.

2 year ELC. Arbitration eligible at the end of the ELC. Hayes is 22. Needs 2 years.

$825,000 is the max for A bonuses

$2,000,000 is the max for B bonuses

$925,000 NHL salary

10% of that salary can be a signing bonus. $185,000 in total

$2,850,000 in bonuses

$925,000

$3,775,000 cap hit

$70,000 AHL

The Rangers can use the bonus cushion if Hayes hits some of the bonuses.
