I can't imagine why he'd pick Colorado

He's not getting a top 6 role with either team.. the money is going to be the same, the Rangers are closer to his hometown, they have kreider who he played with at BC, and the East is a much easier road to the SCF than the West is.

It's amazing. 21 pages for this kid. Dedication of Rangers fans (shrugs).

It's also amazing how 2/3 of the people in this thread think NY is the ideal location for him without knowing exactly what he wants. Guaranteed ice time? Play with his brother? Ex-teammates? A big city? Warmer weather? Proximity to home town? West Coast? Lower age of consent?

None of us know his preferences aside from potentially getting ice time, and people are listing reasons why NY is ideal for him.

Colorado is a good place for him. Three of their RW's are like 35+. They have excellent centers to play with.

Pittsburgh is of course also a good place for him for the same reasons, and they have little depth on the wings.

That is fair, I didn't mean to paint him as soft. He battles and will engage physically. But when I think of Backes physicality is a huge part of his game, especially the ability to wear down dmen on the forecheck.

I tend to like the Wheeler comparison the best. Wheeler with Boston before he broke out is a good comp.

HT, for sure. And I agree completely. Backes is one of the best hitters in the game, My impression of Hayes is that he rarely levels people at all in College. I mean I've not seen much of him at all, two full games and some clips, but that doesn't seem to be his game.

A few notes.

He is big. Listings are what they are, Hayes gotta be close to a honest 6'4.

He is a fairly smart player. He works well with smart linemates so to speak. Like he is just smart in the attacking zone. He can pull of the odd move and has a good shot on he rush.

He will never be able to always be on top of the puck and to eat guys up on the forecheck. He skates like a big man. It will be up to his linemates to get him involved in the play.

My strong impression of him is that he is a center turned RW. I think he just as well could play LW.

I don't think he makes the team out of camp, but with his size I think he would get a lot of attention. Eventually he would make it. Good odds for it at least. We really need size and he has a lot of it...

Inferno, further to this, I do think we are a little intrigued by getting a player with center ability -- and -- size into the organization.

AV really likes to use, and is really good at using, that heavy top line. We also have two -- excellent -- puckmoving centers, in Zucc and of course especially MSL, who can make up for a center who isn't good at skating the puck up ice against a collected NHL D.

There are basically no centers with size available in this league, there are extremely few to start with and the odds of getting one seem more or less impossible. You have like what a handful of guys like Malkin, Kopitar, Getzlaf, E Staal and co, the dinosaurs Lecavalier and Joey Thornton, and a handful of second tier guys like Hanzal, Berglund and J Staal. But that's about it, in total what 15 Cs or whatever.

Hayes is a center out of HS who has played some center in College, and he also plays somewhat of a center game at the wing. He is so smart that potentially could work in a center role in the NHL with a lot of support. Like Arnott who really panned out when he got to play with Elias and Sykora. Either on a line between Kreider and Nash, or at center with a Zucc or especially MSL on his wing. Like a Hags-Hayes-MSL line could get up ice. A line of Kreider-Hayes-Nash that gets a lot of zone starts would be tough to play against. Its a long shot for sure, but you don't get a long shot to find a solid centericemen with size in this league that often.

Personally, i like Haggerty more to be honest. Don't lose anything by signing Hayes, so its a "no brainer". But honestly, Haggerty's skill set would fit this team more. He's a better skater, he's a right handed shot, he has a ridiculous shot that he gets off quickly, and he has enough size.

I'ts Stempniak's spot to lose, but if Haggerty were to be put with guys like Brassard and Zuccarello, he could be ripping home shots on the LW. Especially on the Power Play.

Not looking good for #bruins on Kevin Hayes. I'm being told Rangers and Avs appear to have inside track.

nice nice. I still say the kids in the minors to start the yr. They didnt rush Kreider or Miller so give him AHL time and call him up later unless he crushes it in camp...........assuming NYR even gets him. Big IF still

I think he becomes a Ranger. Just the feeling I get

I don't know how credible the reports really are, but what has been reported is that our offer made him want to consider his options one more day. Unfortuneately that -- could -- mean that he had his sight set and was bound to make a decision yesterday, and that we wasn't that "sight" so to speak, since our strong pinch. If that is the case I recon we still would be the underdog, but...

Mmmh, I don't know. Down the road maybe. But where is Haggerty going to play in the near future? For me it seems like he is a sniper RW that will have to get to the level where he can play a grinding game in the NHL before he is ready. I have a hard time seing him stepping in as some kind of goto sniper at left wing that scores like 25-30 goals instantly.

Because COL has some of the best young players in the league...they are going to be competitive for a LONG time.

Afer watching a few of his college games, I disagree (with your reasoning, not your conclusion). He is a power forward who should absolutely be ready for the grinding game of the NHL. He is strong on the boards, fore checks like a beast and obviously has a great shot.

That does not mean I think he's NHL ready. He needs to develop as a player, and especially needs to improve his decision making offensively and his defensive game. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make the team after a few months worth of AHL seasoning if he can improve in those areas, and if so he would be a good fit on the Brass line.

However I think it's more likely he gets a taste this year and battles for a spot next year.

Yeah I am sorry I realize that I was a bit unclear.

To put it like this, from my point of view what could get him into the NHL right now is his shot. I don't for a second believe that he could beat out what in all honesty is a pretty tough competition (at least both of Fasth and Stempniak) for a spot in the NHL with his grinding game -- coming right out of College. If nothing else, it takes time for him to just get used to the NHL game, and Stemp and Fast are too good for him to beat out while he is giving handicap to them due to (i) his inexperience with playing pro-hockey AND (ii) by playing out of position on the left wing.

So if anything is giving him an edge on the competition its his shot. And I would be very suprised if that alone was enough (while I realize my previous post could be interpreted as me saying that he is a sniper only, I just don't think anything else gives him and edge).

And while we could use a shot, I think Hayes is more verstaile and contributes in a diffrent fashion with his size. Hayes would basically not have to go "toe-to-toe" with anyone, in the sense that he could get a shot as a big player in one position instead of a smaller player in that position. I.e. he will not have to beat out another PF/bigger player for the same position. Haggerty would have to like beat out all of Stempniak, Fast, Kristo, Chris McCarthy and so on.

We really need size in the lineup.

According to @Buccigross via @rayferrarotsn twitter feed. Kevin Hayes signing with the Rangers. Interesting decision from the kid
