1986 Leafs had the 8th seed with 57 points, and Pens in the other conference had 10th seed with 76 points, 4 points behind the 8th seed, and missed the playoffs.

I replied to myself above. We had 30 less points than the Pens in 1987-88 and made the playoffs over them. Crazy.

It's so crazy that Matthews has been disappointing this year, yet here we stand with him having 21 goals in 26 games. A 66 goal pace....
Not playing all that well early in the season, despite the hattys. But now that he's settled in with Willy he seems to be in a groove. 11 points in the last six games, while Willy has a six game point streak.

Filthy by Willy, Matty first to 20.

JT specialty - shoot. I'd rather see that than him passing. Jarnkrok left alone.

Beautiful fake by Matty - had the goalie moving towards Willy instead of Mitch.

Good comeback in the third.

Jarnkrok is good. Great hit by McCabe. Lagesson is looking pretty good for an extra.

Instrumental in both Matty's goals and could have had a couple more assists tonight.
He's recorded a point in 23 of the 26 games so far, points in 88% of the games which is wild. He hasn't looked like the best winger in the NHL like he did on his point streak, but he's been a model of consistency, especially in the past 5 or so games.

How many regulation wins are we up to now?

Are the chronically-online Twitter users that need a real job like @JFresh, bloggers, fringe-media members that discuss hockey data OK with this team yet despite being OK with the almost-same team for the past 5 years while they won just one single playoff round?

Way to see the Leafs bury the Rangers under a pile of pucks.

But, I'm sorry, I'm still not convinced this team is a contender. Trust is like an eraser. It gets smaller and smaller after every mistake.

So when the Leafs come out hot early in the regular season again I remind myself that I've seen it before.

Nothing new here. Nothing that hasn't been done already. Nothing to get excited about.

Am I happy for my favourite team performing so well?

Of course. But once fooled twice shy. Even an addict can string together a few stretches of sobriety.

That's not something to dismiss lightly.

It's an accomplishment to be proud of. One to build upon for future success. But still hangs heavy with the burden of all those past mistakes.

Being misled a single time is enough to create doubt in every truth thereafter.

I don't think it's still "early in the regular season"

It's subjective, I agree.

26 games played is still less than 1/3 of the season though. I also don't think they've been hot so much as lucky. But that's debateable too depending on how you look at your glass.

I say tomayto you say tomahto.

Great win considering that half the team is apparently sick with flu. Have been playing much better as a unit.

Matthews has had the first game of the year that he absolutely dominated.

Really like what I see of Bertuzzi, he hasn’t been adding too many points but man he is everywhere doing the right things. Same with Robertson, keep it up son and the points will come. Great hustle!!

Key to any team is decent goaltending and jones has been solid. Need Sammy to step up a little. D seems to be playing a simplified game. While McCabe had a few boneheaded plays he has been asked to do a lot. Replacements have been up to the task but it would be great if we could grab a true 3/4 to push McCabe down.

You are like a nice warm blanket on a winter night. Never change. In the meantime, sole possession of second place in the division after Thursday night, with games in hand, and just a puddle jump away from the almighty Boston Bruins for the division lead. It's almost as if this could have been predicted a month ago.

So I’ve been in New York City this week so I caught the games on MSG+ network. The Islanders announcer and colour guy Butch Goring gave absolutely no respect to the Leafs and hyped up the Islander players pointing out they were only one point behind the Leafs. (Never mind the games in hand). Gave Tavares no due cause the goal might be called back. Bunch of sucks like their fans. The Ranger announcers were very complementary of Leafs players, especially our core 4.

Of all the night for my dad to want to go out to dinner it was the night they beat the best team in the nhl and put up 6 on one of the best goalies in the world....

Missed every second of the game :(
Regret nothing.

I would give a lot to be able to have dinner with my dad again, peace be with him.

Enjoy every chance to have with him…….. and next time pick a restaurant showing the game. :)

It’s a shame McCabe doesn’t use his body like that on a nightly basis, it’s obvious he can throw hits when he wants, need more of that in spades……….
