While a clear step below, Eichel got traded so I'm sure Matthews can be traded too. Idk why people make it seem like trades are unfathomable, calm down people lol.

Because trades involving Rocket Richard winners in their early 20s who actually play a two way game... don't happen. It is unfathomable.

Eichel literally got traded because the bridge between him and Buffalo got nuked from orbit and then they nuked the ashes again because that just wasn't good enough the first time.
Gretzky got traded/sold because Peter Pocklington is a cheap sack of shit who couldn't afford his team.

Outside of some massive event, guys like Auston Matthews do not get traded. Your choice of Seth Jones was not a very good one. He's not a franchise D-man just because he got picked in the top 4 of the draft. He was traded 1v1 for Ryan Johansen who was a very good player but not anywhere close to the realm of Matthews. Not even at Johansen's peak. Johansen's best year in the league? He had two more points than Auston Matthews had as a rookie... while playing 150 more minutes (1599 for Johansen, 1446 for Matthews.)

Offers are made for these kind of players all the time... but without some inciting event, they are not ever moved because the price to make it happen is so high it would kill the acquiring team. I mean, Eichel is basically worthless for this year and there are very serious doubts about his effectiveness going forward... and he got dealt for Tuch, a high draft pick in Krebs, and another high pick and that was viewed as a bargain basement price.

????? Toronto is 100 miles closer to Scottsdale than Miami.

Both are 6.5 hr flights.
US city!!! Tax free state!!! No media scrutiny!!! Team with a solid base now!!!
Not to mention year round golf!!! All fit most any players wants. 34 is a US citizen. I do not think Scotsdale is in play.

Why would Arizona even contemplate a trade for Matthews when there is an outside chance he signs there as a free agent? Isn't that the narrative? He only signed a five year deal and will bolt from Toronto?

Seriously, Matthews isn't going anywhere, at least for the next three years.
i don't think matthews signed his 5 year deal with the intention to leave the leafs. i think it was more about keeping his options open. he is neither married to idea to retire as a leafs, nor is he dead set to sign with arizona. for the later scenario to happen, the coyotes need to build a promising core, where matthews fits in with his game and salary demand. but they have a lot of building in front of them. i can't imagine matthews going to a team in shambles like the yotes today.

Oh I totally agree. I was pointing out the fan generated narrative that Matthews was always planning on going back home to Arizona, and that is why he signed for less than eight years. It is the same nonsense that has desperate Leaf fans insisting McDavid will leave Edmonton for Toronto after his max contract has run out.

he wanted to sign an 8 year deal, but the leafs asked him to sign a shorter deal to 'lower' his hit to fit/resign Marner under the cap and he accommodated the Leafs.

And the thinnest roster in the NHL is now bare.

Coyotes have to pass.

* Not sure about value. Matthews only has a couple seasons of contract control. Unless there is a handshake deal he is staying in the desert the trade could be devastatingly bad for the Coyotes.

If you look back you’ll see it was management that wanted the 5 year route to keep the aav down.
I think they also like the idea of extending him the 8 year career contract when he’s in his mid twenties not nearly 30 like he would be after an 8 year deal. ELC + 5 + 8 buys up all his “prime” without having too many years at the end you might wish weren’t there.
This is speculative of course, but I see the logic

Could we get alot for Matthews sure. But Toronto after sundin was so desperate for a #1 c we called bozak one.
We got Tavares to but Matthews is a top scorer who we need to show we can build with him not let him walk. Not trade him. This is not the player you deal
