Worst case scenario for the leafs is Matthews pulling a Tavares. Stringing the leafs along with “I want to play here and only here”, then having a no movement clause kick in in his final year, and bounce July 1st.
This would put the leafs in a no win situation. Even if Matthews was open to a trade with his No movement clause, what if the leafs have a solid seasons going? Do they just say “screw it, we have to trade him even tho we are a top team” or do they hold on to him, and risk not winning anything and also losing him for nothing? Not an enviable position to be in for whoever takes over as leafs GM next year.
