He doesn't need to be benched, he needs help. The team desperately lacks another top 4 dman that can take away minutes from him.

Look at the ice distribution...it's actually very low ice for the 3rd pair that's caused Chabot's ice to explode

Typically you see numbers like
25-20-15

We are seeing more like
30-20-10

I'm not sure if you are entirely aware of this but the Senators depth chart without Zub & Chabot looks like an AHL line up

Without them we are back a 4+ GAA again... Get use to it because unless we see a miracle and see rookies play like vets in the next couple of years we wont see a decent defensive core for another 3-4 years

Its not on Chabot - he's trying to step up when tapped. That's on the coaches and GM. right now he's on a burn-out trajectory.

We are getting too many points... a better draft pick is more important than wins right now... so I agree, bench him for a few games so we can drop in the standings again.

I have to assume that was the intent of the OP?

See what the young guys can do OR play Chabot 55 minutes and let the vets play 4 minutes and the kids can fight over that last minute

If there was a way to like this post multiple times, I'd do it.

Chabot needs legitimate help. Same with Brann. And Sanderson and JBD will need legit partners when they're ready for the NHL, too. Zub is decent, but he is new to the league, as well. He has his own learning curve to try and navigate.

Karlsson damned near performed miracles with the partners he had in Ottawa (Methot excluded from the crappy partner group), and now we think it's some sort of standard. It isn't. These young blueliners have the hardest job in hockey right now, and we're not even giving them the basic support to do it.

Chabot is the most talented piece on the team atm, and my pick for captain.

HE IS NOT KARLSSON. HE NEVER WILL BE. Play him 20-25mins a game and he is a #1D.
This. The only problem is similar to with EK, we have no other competetive defensemen that we can rely on. Need to either play him <25 min and get the best performance out of him but less out of the team, or play him more and expect more mistakes from him but better overall team fluidity.

If he missed 3 games now I'd doubt the team would allow the same amount of goals.

But yea benching him would not be a smart decision. Dial his minutes back.

I actually get shivers thinking of our defense without Chabot.

Chabot is playing too much, its pretty obvious. Bench? No. Horrible suggestion. Reduce his minutes? Yes.

It's worth pointing out that our defensemen are in a tough spot generally because we play extremely unstructured hockey. When we win games, we win in spite of how sloppy our execution is based on how hard our players work and having a certain amount of raw talent.

There's a degree of chicken vs egg here obviously because our unstructured play is at least partly the result of our roster construction. But all that to say, someone like Devon Toews would probably not look as good here because of it.

I'm willing to give the coaching staff some leeway because it's a team with a lot of new players and the condensed schedule does not allow for much practice. But if things are more normal next year, I think that instilling a structure needs to be the main priority and the staff should be evaluated on the result.

Would be nice if Chabot had a partner (Methot) like Karlsson did. They have to fix that at some point.

He's arguably their only legit top pairing D playing 30 minutes a night playing with a partner not suited for the role. Play him less with better players and he'll look better, like a lot of the other guys would.

2009..Jarred Cowan, 9th in round 1...injuries and became a bust
2009..Chris Wideman, 4th round #100...Showed promise, got injured and then pulled a Peel and is gone.
2010 .. no D man drafted above 5th round
2011..no D man darfted above teh 5th round
2012..Codi Cecci, 15th in round 1..Plateaued at 4/5 d level, but wanted to be paid as a 2/3..shipped off. His career is at best unimpressive
2012..Tim Boyle, 4th round #106...Bust
2013..Ben Harper, 4th round #108..floundering as a 6/7.
2014...Englund, 3rd round...bust
2014..Gendron, 3rd round..bust
2015..Chabot, A HOME RUN
2015..Wolanin..4th round...probably a bust
2016..Lajoie a 5h round...a Bust
2017..No D man drafted

in 9 years, only 3 Dmen were drafted in round 1..Two ended up being; a bust and a 5/6 underachieving player.
in 9 years, only 2 Dmen drafted by the Sens are playing regularly and a 3rd (Harper is in/out of the lineup)

you draft top 4 D, you do not trade for or free agent sign. It is too difficult. Top 4 D men are precious and their teams do not often trade them. When they do, it is for a significant return.
You do not often sign them as free agents. They typically command big dollars and long term and are often nearing 30, so term becomes an issue.

Melnyk was on Toronto radio 2 years ago, criticizing the Leafs and adding that they forgot about the Defense...It seems that maybe, he forgot the defense on his own team.

This is pretty short-sighted. You are ignoring the fact that they have drafted a D in the first round in three straight drafts, including one at 5th overall (JBD, Thomson, and Sanderson) and two D in the 2nd round (Tychonick and Kleven). So it's pretty clear they have targeted D as an area to improve on.

Give him some help, he’ll improve.

Play him 30 minutes a night with minimal/no help, you get what you give.

Insane people can’t understand this at this point in time.

It's like the people who were like trade Spezza back when he was playing with illustrious linemates like Colin Greening, Bobby Butler, Milan Michalek...

As an aside. Listen to Chabot's answer. He basically was worried about that stupid offside last time which should have never happened (Dadonov on the 2 on 1). That says a lot that he was worried about that.
