I'm really disappointed.

I've finally given a shot to doing a full 25 year playthrough with Salary Cap on and I was expecting it to be challenging to try and keep a competitive team together but I've been a top contender for 10 straight years with no end in sight. The hard part was building the team in the first place but after that, it's the same as when I have no salary cap.

I end up every year having to sign a guy to a 1 year, $10 mil contract just to be over the minimum cap limit, not because my team is shit and I don't spend to the cap, I just can't because of the damn morale. Would I love to keep that 85 overall defenseman on my third pairing? Or my 90 overall center on the second line? I'd love to, but the damn morale is the only thing that matters in this stupid game.

Every few seasons, I'm forced to trade away good assets for draft picks and prospects because I just can't find them a spot on my roster. That's just absolutely moronic. Pittsburgh didn't have to trade away Malkin because he was having fits about being a '2nd Line Center'. Nashville doesn't have to part ways with two of their 4 Top pairing defensemen.

Another thing that's just stupid, but this time its to my advantage...

The AI has no concept whatsoever of term. For the computer, it doesn't matter if a guy is signed to a 1 year or 8 year deal, what matters is the moolah. They'll spit on you if you try and send them a 29 year old guy with 1 year left on a 12mil contract but they'll salivate at the thought of robbing you a 34 year old guy at 9,5mil for the next 8 years. (I guess they wouldn't accept the deal if ANYONE played past age 36-37).

So in essence, my strategy, which has been very successful, has always been to sign everyone to the longest deals once they're off their ELC. It doesn't matter who. 4th line grinder at 80 overall? 8 year contract.

What if he sucks or someone better comes along? Trade him for a 4th. That's it. Teams will make lines to get a load of this guy, they don't even know he's got 8 years left, it's as if it's a surprise every year. "Is it over?! Nope! Better luck next year!"

I can agree with the CAP issue. About season 10 I was singing guys for 14 mil a years st to hit minimal cap. Almost impossible to bring up young talented rookies since the one way 2way contract glitch.

I also hate how the contracts (money per year basis) basically tells you if a player will become something valuable or not. It makes it difficult to actually be smart about your signings and getting those steals of a contracts.

I've had MED Elite centers at 20 years old signed for 8 years at 1.20 mil and guess what? They never got higher than 80 overall.

On the other hand, a LOW Top 6 D I signed from free agency to an 8 year contract at 4.65 mil got all the way to an 86 overall. But he was freaking 73 Overall and 23 years old at the time of the signing. So why did he ask for that much f***ing money. It's cheating. I should have been able to get this guy locked up for a decade at 1-2 mil MAX.

''I'm destined for greatness.'' he said to General Manager Andrew Millan.

- "And you think I'll give you 5 f***ing millions? You're a worthless bum." he spits out.

...

"*Sigh* Welcome aboard."

Canadiens oust Bergevin, Hire Nelson as GM
Montreal, QC -

The Montreal Canadiens announced today the firing of Marc Bergevin as GM and the subsequent hiring of Wyatt Nelson. The move comes as a surprise to many in the city, as the organization had recently pledged their loyalty to the now former GM of the club.

In a statement today, Nelson was very blunt about the future of his team.

"My predecessor does not leave me with a tremendous amount to work with. He seemed to try to patch his roster together in a makeshift manner over the past few seasons and should be ashamed of his shoddy performance. In the coming days, I will meet with my coaching staff and other members of the front office to discuss what our roster will look like in the 2017-18 season and beyond. I want the boys in the locker room to know that poor effort will be unnacceptable. We will be exploring our options moving forward and discussing potential trades with the other 30 NHL clubs. There are no untouchables. Everyone is a available for the right...price."

The cryptic ending to Wyatt's statement has many people believing Carey Price may be on his way out of Montreal. Additionally it is believed he may be shopping Shea Weber and Max Pacioretty as well as he looks to overhaul the roster.

Shoulda got one game in
The development on this annoys me. No matter what, all my prospects hardly develop. Trade them away, and all of a sudden their ratings jump up an insane degree. IE Russ Whitfield. Drafted 1st overall in 2019. Goes from a 70 to a 72. Then to a 75. Then a 78. Then an 80. Trade him away and in a year he's now a 91 and still growing. WTF?!

That happened to me a few times too where a player shot sky high in the playoffs into the draft, traded them for a high pick, then saw them drop off at the start of next season.

So I just saw something I have never seen before in all my years playing Be A GM mode. I'm still playing NHL 14 and I'm in the '30-'31 season. I'm in a bit of a retooling phase after the retirement of Erik Karlsson so I've been stocking up on prospects. The main club still managed to make it into the playoffs but I get swept by the Lightning in the second round.

My farm team on the other hand, manages to go all the way and win the Calder Cup, making it back to back championships for the B-Sens, which made me feel pretty proud of the work I had done. So I simulate a few days ahead, and get the pop up notification showing that the Vancouver Canucks won the Stanley Cup and the Binghampton Senators won the Calder Cup.

Then I think to myself - "I'm pretty sure the Canucks won the Stanley Cup last season too" which would be an impressive feat considering I've only ever seen a CPU team manage to win back to back championships once before (back in NHL 12), and in that situation, it was a team that I was the GM for, then I left to manage the Ottawa Senators.

So I go to check the awards history to confirm my suspicions, and I'm shocked to find out that not only did the Canucks win back-to-back championships, they actually successfully pulled off a three peat.

yeah in my current gm mode AI carolina won 4 in a row but i edited quite a few of their players (slavin, darling, skinner, necas, aho, pesce and a few others)

also my big problem with nhl 18 gm mode is that how players develop dont match their size or their play style. especially with elite or franchise players. why is a 5 foot 9 franchise playmaker a body checking machine who is strong as an ox???

I also hate how the contracts (money per year basis) basically tells you if a player will become something valuable or not. It makes it difficult to actually be smart about your signings and getting those steals of a contracts.

I've had MED Elite centers at 20 years old signed for 8 years at 1.20 mil and guess what? They never got higher than 80 overall.
This is definitely annoying, but if you sign them to the term they are asking for there is a chance for them develop. I’ve had a guy who was Med Top 9 F hovering around 78-80ovr. I figured he’d topped out but was a decent role player so I kept signing him to whatever he was asking, like 1 or 2 year deals. At the end of what was probably his 3rd or 4th contract, age 26, he finally developed into an 82-83ovr. I guarantee had I signed him to an 8 year contract, when he was 22yrs 78ovr, he’d never have progressed past 80.

Same thing for the guys who ask for the big contracts before they’re proven. Sure you can sign them to that big $$$ and they’ll develop into a player to match that asking salary. However, I’m positing that they’ll be locked into that progression for the duration of the contract with zero chance of further development. As you increase the term the asking price increases and normally goes past their last development year, age 26. This is the method we've been referencing. In theory they could develop into an even greater player if you sign them for what they are asking, normally shorter term.

Basically I think the contracts are tied into the calculation somehow and that’s why we can use the asking salary as a litmus test for progression. So during development years 17-26 you want short term contracts to maximize development. Still use the asking salary as a tool but don't sign the player to max term deals. Sign them to a shorter deal that will allow for another contract during their development window. Likewise if a player isn't showing that they'll develop try using 1 or 2 year deals. Every time you sign them to a new contract the development calculation changes/resets and gives them a chance to progress. I'm just going from past experience and haven't seen any code or anything.

TLDNR: Never sign guys under 24 to long term deals.

Just had the weirdest glitch happen: all my created players for the draft duplicated... So year one draft, there was Shevchnikov x2, Hughes x2, and also created player Cale Makar was in the draft, although I put his rights to Colorado.

What the heck just happened. Safe to say I just wasted that year of play...

All my created players were put into Free Agency. Also now every time I try and go into Create Player my game crashes. Every. Single. Time.

Four in a row is pretty impressive. With the randomness of the simulation and the lack of GM brain, it's truly extraordinary when you have a situation where the AI didn't shoot itself in the foot and kept a team competitive long enough to win multiple championships back to back like this.

That's an interesting theory, and it sort of ties in to what I've seen in terms of the statistical progression. Albeit it's for NHL 14, but from what I observed, it seems like players are more likely to accumulate significant statistical progression when they're having a good season AND when it's the final year of their contract.

For example, in the GM mode I mentioned in my earlier post, I have a defenseman called Darcy York who was a second round pick 3* defenseman. At 24, he was around 75 OVR but his offensive attributes were excellent. Used him as a powerplay specialist and he put up an impressive 53 points. Fast forward to the end of the year (final year of his contract), and he jumped to 84 OVR. I signed him to a three year contract (knowing full well that the statistical progression wasn't permanent and he would come back down).

The following season, he got a really bad injury and only played 32 games (putting up 24 points) and came back to earth at 76 OVR. He rebounded the next year with 54 points and then scored a solid 57 points in 78 games with a +50(!) on the last year of his contract to win the Norris trophy. That off-season, he shot up to 85 OVR.

Similarly, had another player that I picked up late in one season, he was 80 OVR but also had excellent offensive attributes. The following season (last year of his contract), he put up 82 points in 80 games and he jumped to an 85 OVR. I ended up not resigning him because he was asking for $12 million (I offered $10 million) so he went to Anaheim.

These aren't the only players I've made the same sort of observation on either. So I posit that even with older players, you want them on short-term contracts, even one year contracts because if they perform really well, theoretically they are more likely to gain that statistical progression boost when they're in a contract year.

This game is so freakin' broken.

If you don't sign your prospects right away they go to free agency, even if they don't have an expiring contract.

Think it's unsigned players already drafted before starting your GM:

an example Matthew Strome with the Flyers goes to F/A if he isn't signed immediately after year one.

Quite annoying. I usually sign my prospects (unless they're ready) when the UFA is about to come up, have to save on contracts...

This game is beyond buggy, I'm just noticing it all now.

I'm a back for another GM Mode. I've started a be a pro mode, but I had a problem with my save.

PS3, NHL 15.
I'm back, but this time I decided to do a "fantasy" career, not a "serious" one lol.

So.

- Fantasy draft
- Randomly picked the :jets
- Randomly was placed on the 6th
- NO SALARY CAP. Gary decided to ban it and a rich man decided to put many $$$ in the Winnipeg team
- TIES are back
60 minutes, if tied -> 5 minutes 5 on 5, if tied -> the game is over.
2 points for the win
1 point for the tie
0 point for the game lost (60 minutes or even if it was in OT)

DRAFT

With my first choice (6th overall) I selected Alexander Ovechkin. Who else? :naughty:

I decided to select the BPA almost every round. I had a lot of very good veterans to start this team.
Pavelski, Callahan, Spezza, Parise, Thornton, Marleau, Vrabta, Dupuis, Weiss, Laich, Jokinen, Markov, Bouwmeester, Tyutin, Orpik, Martin, Russell, Carle, Ward, Boyle, Elias, Thomas, Streit, Iginla, Doan, Lecavalier, Jagr ...

SUMMER

But during the summer, I decided to built my team with players under 30 years old (and who are 80+ overall). And then only use the draft. Trade players only when they are 30 . (Ovi out of this rule:naughty:)
Ovechkin, Campbell and Clowe are the only guys I selected in the draft who still on this team. Campbell and Clowe because I need them to complete the team.
Fleischmann the only guy from FA, even if he's 30 y.o.

After 1929837734 trades  some players were acquired then traded for better pieces or younger pieces or for more players, ...

I ruined all my 1st round picks but I've manage to keep those in the next draft (McDavid is coming) Winnipeg had their and the NYI 1st round pick. But no 1st pick in 16 17 18 19 and 20 drafts.

The ages of my players in the summer. So my forwards are here for at least 4 years. The D for 4 years too. The goalie for 3.

Shoulda got one game in
I just had a weird thing happen in my current season. I traded the same guy to Calgary 3 times in 3 days because they kept sending him down to the minors and I kept claiming him on waivers. Finally I got tired of it and signed a 21 year old d-man with an 81 rating to fill out my roster. I kinda wanted to keep it going just to see how many times I could have traded him to Calgary.

I had the same thing happen to me in an old one. Made a blockbuster trade that I used to dump cap and get me two first round picks only for them to waive him and letting me pick him up again. He went for two more first rounders right away to another team, waived and claimed to do it a third time with yet another team. That next draft I legit had 7 of the top ten picks all from one guy. Almost felt bad taking him back so I declined the last time he was waived.

I am having trouble with this: Create Player in NHL18. I am not able to go into the create player option screen, my game always crashes and gives me an error code. Tried reinstalling. Maybe I should delete the game off system storage and then try? Thanks.
