I dont understand the prospect progression. If you dont sign your drafted players right away there rating wont improve? Another example is I had Nico hischier for 5 seasons and his overall only went from a 78 to a 80 sometimes 82 then goes back down however in other gm modes I have ive looked at Hischier and hes at 88-89 quicker. If someone could tell me how prospect progression works it would help me out alot.
I read once that in NHL 18 the line they play on matters. If they are listed as a 4th liner they will develop better on the 4th than the 1st, and if they are AHL or depth play in AHL.

I'm convinced this game rigs the lottery so you never win it or get screwed by it.

I saved my file at the deadline as NJ. I'm DEAD LAST in the league. I sim to June, I ALWAYS FINISH LAST and still get stuck with the 4th pick. HOWEVER, EVERYONE ELSE CHANGES EVERY TIME.

I had PITTSBURGH WIN IT after they literally just missed the playoffs once. (Crosby / Malkin were both hurt most of the season).

This is a joke. CPU always outright refuses to move #1. I offered 4th overall and Schneider to Arizona for #1 and they said no. Okay then.

I had a guy who was listed as a 4th liner, yet I played him 1st line in ahl with special team time, and he grew 5 points in his overall by the start of the next season along with a spike in roles (grew to 2nd line). I'm not sure if this always the case, but there are exceptions in my experience.

Okay then.

Getting a team to move a 1st rounder that isn't on the block always requires an overpayment, and how much you have to overpay always goes up as the season goes on. If you want the guy who goes #1 the easiest way is to wait until after he's been picked then try and acquire the player instead of trying to acquire the pick. If you have a high pick yourself and you draft a guy who has similar value it's actually pretty easy to just flip the players with maybe a small add.

Anyone know if EA has said anything about how impossible it is to get teams to retain salary? I know in years past it was ridiculously easy to get them to retain 50%, but it seems like instead of adjusting the algorithm they just decided to make it impossible. Even proposals that are stupidly one-sided get rejected as soon as you ask the CPU to retain anything.

Actually, it depends on how much you’re willing to give, I’ve had the CPU team retain 17% with a little sweetener.

Random roster question, although I feel I already know the answer.
I'm trying to start a new franchise mode with Montreal. I want Andrei Markov on the team, but I want to use updated rosters. Is there any way to make that work? I guess since he's in the KHL now he's gone from the game. He's not on Team Russia either.

Am I out of luck?

Season recap

I didn't meet expectations from the owner (in wins) in the first to season. This time I need to do it, my contract year. + I need to qualify for the playoffs this year too.
And yes, I'll do it. Qualify for the postseason on the last day, in game #82

Sam Reinhart wins the Calder trophy (1st trophy individual + team for the franchise since I took over). Tight race with Burakovsky.

Rochester Americans will also participate to their first playoffs. Eliminated in Round 1 in 6 games by the title holder Utica Comets.

Trade Deadline

It was a good experience, 2 round, 14 games in the playoffs for the young players.

Pittsburgh sweeps Edmonton to win the Cup.

Like IRL, Pens and Crosby wins SC and CS. in 2016 and 2017.

in the middle of season 1 on NHL 18 with rangers. Realized I could trade jesse puljivari 78ovr (elite low) for filip forsberg 86ovr (elite low)...im stuck whether I should go through with trade. I saw something online where puljivari grew to a 92 at 26yrs old. Maybe i can toss zuccarello and 1st or 2nd rd pick.

I did pick up anthony mantha for grabner + late pick: i'll miss grabner's speed but part of getting younger.

Season recap

I went 9-0-0 to start the season. Stopped by Los Angeles (6-3 L).
16-1-0 before the 2nd and 3rd loss of the year, back to back loss against Pittsburgh and first away loss @ Washington.
17-3-0 in the first 20 games.
Normally it's very good to compete for the President's Trophy. One game before the ASG, and 9 games after, I just had 1 wins in 10 games, back to earth.

Then, the TDL

At the end of the season, I was lucky to look in the standings, because it was almost like I was in free fall, and with 5-6-7 games remaining, I didn't have my destiny in my own hands. It would be a fail to go all-in and no make the playoffs.
One game particularly, where I was in danger, down by 3 in Tampa Bay, in 3rd period, my 2nd line saves me from a disaster. In 10 minutes they have scored 3 goals to tie the game, and then I win it in OT.
8 teams (5 atlantic and 3 metro) were battling for 4 spots (2nd-3rd ATL + 2 WC spots).
Like last year, qualified for the post season on the last game.

McDavid without opponents for the Calder Trophy.

Trade Deadline

With my 2 first centers on ELCs, I decided to go all-in this year.

:sabres:avs
R. O'Reilly (86)J. D'Amigo (78)
1st round pick in 2018 (BUF)

But before this trade, I made some trades with picks (all picks from 2018)

4th round pick + 6th round pick to Buffalo
2x 5th round picks + 6th round pick + 2x 7th round pick to Winnipeg

2nd round pick to Buffalo

S. Stamkos (TBL) + S. Crosby (PIT) 112 points => Art + Hart (for Stamkos) and Ted + Selke (for Crosby)

McDavid's deflection wins the series against the Habs. After a crossbard and a post in the 1st OT.

We had the same record with the Habs during the season, but I had one more ROW, so I got the home ice advantage.

After some injuries, I called up Mathew Barzal from the AHL (because Rochester was not in Playoffs).
Game 4, 1st shift, 1st shot and he scores a goal, and it would be a GWG. 52 seconds on the ice. I have another candidate for a 3rd straight Calder Trophy next year.

After 4 years of rebuild, Buffalo Sabres reach the ultimate goal, winning the STANLEY CUP.
The last game was tight. 0-0 after 59 minutes and 2 seconds.
Tyler Ennis scores the GWG with 57.5 to go. McDavid adds another one at 19:26 and Barzal scores the only ENG @ 19:44

Tyler Ennis is called by Gary Bettman to receive the Conn Smythe Trophy.
13 goals + 13 assists for 26 points in 24 games.

S. Reinhart 7 G + 19 A = 26 points too
E. Kane 9 G + 11 A = 20 points
C. McDavid 8 G + 10 A = 18 points
...
R. O'Reilly 3 G + 2 A = 5 points in 11 GP
M. Barzal 4 G + 2 A = 6 points in 21 GP

Z. Parise was the best in points (and goals too I think) 20 G + 17 A = 37 points. But he lost in the SCF.

Trophies

Stanley Cup -> Buffalo Sabres
Prince of Wales rophy -> Buffalo Sabres
Tyler Ennis -> Conn Smythe Trophy
Connor McDavid -> Calder Trophy

----

What's happening lol with the game??? in 4 years only 1 time it's the goalie who won the Conn Smythe trophy and it was in year 1. Finally not a rigged game? lol

Anyone else notice the absurd abundance of talented un-drafted 19-21yr old prospects in free agency? It's not right away and I think it was around 2021-2022 that I started signing these guys. I literally sign one of these guys and he challenges for the Calder. Done it like 3 years in a row now. I'm going to have to make a rule for myself before it ruins my GM. I wasn't paying much attention to it and now I've got 3 of these dudes in my top 6... Also they never reject your offer if it's max ELC or at least it hasn't happened to me. The one good thing is the CPU does recognize they are worthy and will sign them. It just seems to be a yearly thing now and I don't like that.

You will probably have to create him, them add onto Montreal roster.

I don't remember it being this bad in past games :( . I can't stand looking at them on my roster and feels like I cheated, LOL. Had to trash my GM and am starting a new one. May actually post this one if I'm not too lazy.

Found a semi game breaking glitch. It's not to bad but if exploited could be useful. With any of those F/A rookies out of the draft if you offer them a contract and before sending your offer, change their contract type from 2way-1way and back to 2way and their asking price will go down from max to the lowest it could possibly be. Essentially what im saying is you can make it so you're offering 200k atleast more than what theyre asking and they wont decline. Havent tried this method with regular free agents but i feel like the glitch only works if they want a 2way deal. Still pretty weird glitch.

I made a little mistake as a GM, I wanted to promote Barzal + an entire line (Cornel, Carrier and Baptiste) to the NHL, so I traded Deslauriers and Dalpe, but then I realised that Carrer and Baptiste would be only #13 and 14. So I decided to keep them in the AHL, and sign White and Nordstrom to be the extra forwards.

I see I didn't give you the Norris winners. Karlsson won it in year 2 and 5. Suter in year 3 and Doughty in year 4. Can't see and don't remember who won it in the first year.

After beating them in ECF last year, we meet again.
Well, down 3-0, Islanders were able to force Game 7, and they weren't far away of winning that series.
In game 7, after 2 periods, they were leading 3-0, but Ennis, Ristolainen and Barzal scored in less than 3 minutes in the beggining of the 3rd period. Than NYI scored 4th but McDavid ties the game with 39.6 to go.
Then we win in OT.
