2018-2019 NHL Season

Season Preview

images

In nets the best goaltender of his generation returns for yet another season. Henrik Lundqvist was dazzling last season, and although there are always warnings that father time will catch up this season, the Rangers expect nothing less of Hank. To back him up, the Rangers have tasked Jaroslav Halak with those duties. The 33-year old was a Free Agent signing this offseason.

images
images

On defense, Brady Skjei begins his new deal which comes with bigger expectations as the teams #1 D-man. Also returning are Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan Sproul and Tony DeAngelo. Filling out the defense are rookies Chris Bigras and Neal Pionk, who are somewhat of unknowns coming into the season.

images

The Rangers have a very young, talented forward group. Familiar faces return in 11 of 14 forwards on the roster including Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Pavel Buchnevich, Mats Zuccarello, Vlad Namestnikov, Ryan Spooner, Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Vesey,
Jesper Fast, Vinnie Hinstroza and Janne Kuokkanen. Joining them is FA signing Adrian Kempe and both of the Rangers 2017 first round picks Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil. The Rangers could use their surplus of forwards to acquire a defenseman if the currently inexperienced 3rd pair doesn't work. Cut from the team is vet Matt Beleskey, who finds himself buried in the minors and on the trading block.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers off to incredible start, sit first in NHL
Dec. 1st, 2018
The Rangers are 17-5-3 and have are atop the NHL standings heading into the winter of 2018. Goaltending has been the savior of the team that has been
streaky offensively. Can they keep it up?

images

BREAKING NEWS: After incredible start, Rangers fall victim to a single win in December.
Jan. 1st, 2019
The Rangers were sitting pretty first overall until they got the Winter Blues, going 1-10-3 in the month of December. Lundqvist couldn't save them this time as they ran into injuries to top players in Zibanejad, Zuccarello and Shattenkirk. The rut plunged them to 5th in the Metro, and the last WC spot.

images

BREAKING NEWS: Halfway through season, Kempe leads Rangers in points.
Jan, 5th, 2019
The Rangers stars have struggled, but Kempe has thrived on Broadway. The young forward has 31 points (13-18-31) in 41 games this season. Kevin Hayes has struggled compared to last season, as has Chris Kreider. Henrik Lundqvist owns a .935 SV%
halfway through the season.

BREAKING NEWS: Henrik Lundqvist injured, week-to-week.
Feb. 10th, 2019
With the Rangers needing to decide if they're contenders or pretenders heading into the Trade Deadline, this could finally push the wobbly train that has been the Rangers off their tracks.

The TRADECENTRE broadcast team:
Host: James Duthie
Trade Breaker Desk: Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Pierre LeBrun, and Gord Miller
Instant Analysis Panel: Ray Ferraro, Jeff O’Neill, Dave Poulin, Martin Biron, Pierre McGuire
Trade Bait: Craig Button
Deadline Panel: Jamie McLennan, Aaron Ward

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duthie: Welcome to the 2019 NHL Trade Deadline folks! I'm James Duthie, here with our Trade Breakers, Insiders and others to follow the NHL, specifically the New York Rangers. I'll send you straight to our Deadline Panel for a Recap on the Rangers to this point.

McLennan: The Rangers have been a very interesting team, almost 3 different teams in the same season. After starting off their season on a torrid pace for the second straight year, this year they hit rock bottom in December, before finding a happy medium up until now. The only constant has been Henrik Lundqvist's incredible play, but with his injury you wonder if the Rangers are going to bite the bullet here and sell.

Ward: You'd have to think that's whats going to happen here. They have to resign Pavel Buchnevich this offseason, and can't do that AND sign Mats Zuccarello. One has to go and you can already assume it's going to be the elder.

images
images

images
images
McKenzie: Sorry to interrupt guys but the Rangers have made a couple moves here. First off, they've moved Jimmy Vesey to the Toronton Maple Leafs for Sam Morin and Dmytro Timashov. And in a corresponding move, they've dealt Ryan Sproul, a 2nd in 2020 and a 6th in 2019 to the Anaheim Ducks for Maxime Comtois.

Ferraro: This signals change here in New York. They've dealt 2 roster players, and only gotten one in return. The real haul here is in prospects. Maxime Comtois obviously has seen his stock fall drastically since the year before his draft, but is still a solid prospects. Timashov does have his flaws, but the kids real talented. My favorite part here is Morin though. The swap of Sproul for Morin is a real good one for the Rangers, as they add a more defensive defenseman.

images
images

Dreger: Were not done here. The Rangers have traded yet another one of their captains. Mats Zuccarello, a fan favorite and one of the longest tenured Rangers, has been traded to the Bruins along with Matt Beleskey for Jakub Zboril and a 1st in 2019.

Biron: The Bruins are major contenders this year. But on the flip side, the Rangers are building a real nice crop of prospects. Zboril will be a top-4 defender one day in New York, and this gives the Rangers two first round picks in the upcoming draft.

images
images

Miller: The Rangers have added yet another prospect. This time at the expense of Kevin Hayes and a 4th round pick in this years draft, they've acquired Nikita Scherbak from the St. Louis Blues. Scherbak will join the Rangers right away and they expect him to be a major performer.

O'Neill: Kevin Hayes was really underperforming this season and the Rangers are lucky they got this haul for him. They preyed on the Blues desperation for size and depth up the middle, as any contending team needs. Scherbak gives the Rangers song depth on the wings, and a real shooter that they just lack for the most part up front. This is a real good haul.

images
images
images

LeBrun: Were just moments away from the deadline here and the Rangers seem to have made their final move to solidify the tank this season. They've traded Jaroslav Halak, while Henrik Lundqvist is already out, along with prospects Dawson Leedahl and Sergei Zborivskiy to the LA Kings for prospect Kale Clague, RFA Tobias Rieder, a 2nd rounder and a 6th rounder.

McGuire: Rieder can't be signed until the offseason, Clague is a prospect, and the draft picks are just that, draft picks. The Rangers have gutted their roster, with the remains a team barely recognizable. If this Trade Deadline was a success remains to be seem, but if they're goal is to sell, then they've completed that.

images
images

Button: Two more notes here guys. The Rangers have claimed Riley Nash off waivers from the Bruins, and he will join the team for their game tonight in Ottawa. Also, the Rangers have recalled Brett Howden from the AHL.

Duthie: Well, that's all here guys. We'll see you at the draft.

Henrik Lundqvist ran into injured that derailed his chance at 30 wins again. Otherwise, posting the best SV% of his career, he was inredibly and the Rangers can count on him next year to carry them. They will need to find a new backup.

Next summer I need to re-sign McDavid, Barzal, Ristolainen, Wigle, Raddysh, ... Kane too, but the captain seems like an TDL candidate.
So I've traded those 5+ millions that Foligno was making.
Could have a very stacked team for this year too.

Jarratt injured for 2 months in the start of the season.
McDavid, Ristolainen, Slaney to the ASG.

And then it happens, despite being at the top of the league, I've decided to trade my Captain since Day 1.

Kane's stats with Buffalo
RS : 794 GP - 314 G - 291 A - 605 PTS
PO : 119 GP - 46 G - 38 A - 84 PTS
3 cups
This year he was at 25G + 24A = 49 pts in 62 GP

Reinhart will be the 3rd "A"
and in the summer, Ristolainen will be the new C (Zadorov and Reinhart A's)

Wigle won the points race in rookie category by 1 point. But it's my goalie Slaney who won the Calder trophy.

Can someone please help?!!

I'm deep into a franchise mode and in the resign stage, I have 32 contracts and it won't let me sign anymore of my draft picks?

Yes, i made sure i releases all RFA's and have more than enough in cap space?

The player rejects my offer and say i no longer have room on the roster for him. I can't wrap my head around this one.

Can you only have so many entry level contracts?

I forgot to mention this is NHL 18 for ps4.

Thanks in advance for anyone that helps me out!

Sounds like you've run into a known glitch - I've heard people reporting this as well.

Did you have auto sign free agents on at any point?

Never, I hate the auto signing feature.

That really sucks if its a glitch though, I had a sick franchise going and was in the year 32-33 haha.

Ah! the ELC bug has reared its ugly head in this year’s game. This bug will not allow you to sign any entry level contracts during the re-sign phase. All the prospects say the roster is full, even though it clearly isn’t. This tends to occur after I’ve drafted a lot of players leading me to believe there is another limit to the roster. You can have 50 players under contract and you should be able to have as many un-signed prospects as you like. However, it appears that once you’ve reached a certain number the game recognizes it as a full roster. Ignoring the fact you don’t have 50 players under contracts. Now I’ve got to battle it out with other teams in FA to sign 3 of my prospects. Luckily, I’ve never had one stolen because of this.
"

Basically, you drafted too many players in your most recent drafts. It's annoying and happens to me sometimes, but I've learned how to play around this obstacle.

Hello I started be a GM with my favourite team the Montreal Canadians, I want to rebuild thru the draft mostly and make a new culture in montreal. 2017-2018
I would normally be holding training camp and trying/testing out some prospects. This year I’ve already got the roster set in my mind and will do all that next season. I’ll be utilizing these games to finalize the lines and subsequent strategies.

Free Agent Acquisitions:
RW PWF Jarome Iginla – 79ovr 40yrs – Top 9 F – 1yr $1.500M
C PLY Marcel Goc – 75ovr 34yrs – Bottom 6 F – 1yr $0.650M
TWD Dennis Wideman – 77ovr 34yrs – 7th D – 1yr $0.650M
HYB Mathias Niederberger – 74ovr 24yrs – Med Backup – 1yr $0.650M
Analysis:
Goc and Wideman will start while Iginla is an insurance policy for several youngsters currently in the lineup. All three of these veterans should help stabilize the team and provide a good atmosphere. Mathias Niederberger was simply the best goalie available and we only had four under contract.

WSH Preseason Recap(4-3-0)
I made a few adjustments and feel we’ll be a competitive team right out the gate. I think Brett Connolly could have a break out year and move up in the lineup. Andre Burakovsky needs to prove himself this season and could also earn a promotion if he plays the right way. My trio of big bodies: Tom Wilson, Devante Smith-Pelly, and Alex Chiasson will all be required to produce wherever they are in the lineup. Should they go stale I won’t hesitate to inject Jarome Iginla, in their place, or move them around. The blue line looks solid with rookie Christian Djoos earning a job alongside veteran Matt Niskanen while Orlov and Carlson hold down the top pairing.

Regular Season
I’m expecting a playoff berth from both teams and feel Washington are Cup contenders.

WSH 16-Game Recap
22pts – 10-4-2 – 3.44gfpg – 2.56gapg – 33.3%pp – 88.1%pk – 7-2-1(Last10)
2nd in Division – 4th in Conference – 6th in NHL
The special teams and a formidable top line are getting the job done at the moment. Ovechkin(23pts) leads the NHL in scoring while Oshie(20pts) is tied for fourth. Several players are racking up points on the Power Play with Oshie(6ppg) and Kuznetsov(8ppp) leading the pack. Winning could become a problem should we slowdown or stall in that area. It’s still too early to make a judgement, but I’m worried about the teams’ defense. Our blue liners are playing well, especially the top pairing of Orlov(7pts) and Carlson(12pts), which could indicate a strategy problem. It could also point to a goaltending issue, but it’s unlikely both net minders would be suffering. We’re currently scoring in droves and I won’t be changing much for fear of mucking it up. I will however be making a few minor adjustments to the forward lines and strategies. Should they stick I’ll update the lineup in the next recap.

HER 20-Game Recap
23pts – 11-8-1 – 2.25gfpg – 2.35gapg – 17.9%pp – 88.1%pk– 7-3-0(Last10)
6th in Division – 9th in Conference – 15th in AHL
Without the talents of Jakub Vrana(22pts) and Riley Barber(15pts) this team would have trouble scoring. I’ve got to get more production from the other forward lines and will have to try different combinations. I updated the forward lines and adjusted the line strategies. I also made a slight adjustment to the 2nd defensive pairings line strategies. If everything works out I'll post the updates next recap.

WSH 32-Game Recap
44pts –20-8-4 – 3.13gfpg – 2.41gapg – 24.1%pp – 87.2%pk– 8-1-1(Last10)
1st in Division – 1st in Conference – 3rd in NHL
I knew the special teams would regress and feel the adjustments I made helped mitigate that. The PP came back down to earth and our average goals per game dropped with it. We’re still averaging three goals and I’m quite happy with that. The changes I made were defense oriented and that’s quantified by the fewer goals against per game while the PK slightly regressed. The PK regressing would normally mean an uptick in goals against per game. However, my adjustments increased our team defense by a large enough amount to mitigate that regression and overcome it! The team is rolling and I received several offers for players like DSP, Vrana, and Eller. I was tempted to pull the trigger on two of the Eller offers, but ultimately felt they weren’t worth risking the team chemistry. DSP could’ve been dealt, but the return offered for him was laughable. I just wouldn’t feel comfortable with our depth should I deal those guys for anything less than maximum perceived value.

Speaking of maximum value, T.J. Oshie(14g) has been a force to reckon with. He’s scoring at a point per game pace(32pts) and will likely demolish his career high of 60 points. Likewise Evgeny Kuznetsov(5g) is scoring at a point per game pace(32pts) and should challenge his career high of 77 points. Now we come to Ovechkin leading the league in points(45pts) and goals(25g) completing our dominant top line. On the blue line we’ve got John Carlson(7g) taking charge with 23pts. Veterans Orlov(10pts) and Niskanen(10pts) aren’t absent, but Carlson is the obvious offensive threat. Rookie Christian Djoos(+3 +/-) has held his own on the 2nd pairing and even replaced Orlov on the top pairing during a 6 game injury absence. He isn’t producing offense like I thought he would, scoring a single point, but he’s not a detriment and as a rookie that’ll do. In contrast, the slow skating and aging Brooks Orpik(1g) has scored 3pts. Other standouts include Tom Wilson(17pts), who leads the NHL in hits(79h) and is 2nd in blocked shots(20bks) among NHL forwards. Andre Burakovsky(11pts) is a possession monster with 11 giveaways) and 24 takeaways. That bodes well for Andre as the only other players on the team with a similar ratio are superstars Ovechkin(7gv/32tk) and Backstrom(13gv/25tk). While Burakovsky isn’t scoring in droves he isn’t a liability and his defense helps generate offensive opportunities. If it wasn’t obvious I’m extremely pleased with the output of this roster. The updated forward lines are below:

HER 40-Game Recap
47pts – 22-15-3 – 2.33gfpg – 2.35gapg – 15.8%pp – 86.1%pk– 5-3-2(Last10)
3rd in Division – 5th in Conference – 12th in AHL
I was able create a bit more offense without sacrificing defense. I’m going to consider this a win on a team that is lacking NHL prospects. Jakub Vrana(19g) is our lone all-star leading the way with 38 points followed by Riley Barber(25pts). I’m extremely pleased with Mathias Bau(20pts) and his massive 6’7” frame. Our top blue liner appears to be Jakub Jerabek(10pts) with a +5 +/- rating. Jonas Siegenthaler(3g) is exceeding expectations and leading the defenders with 13pts. Backup netminder Vitek Vanecek(7-3-0) has been terrific with 2 shutouts and a 93.7%sv and 1.69gaa. Starting goalie Niederberger(16-13-3) has been adequate with 4 shutouts. I’ve still got a few weak links to sort out. Connor Hobbs(4pts) is leaky with a -13 +/- and 37 giveaways. He’ll be replaced by veteran Aaron Ness. Hampus Gustafsson(12pts) is also suffering from a poor +/- raiting(-9), but I can’t figure out why. He has 22 takeaways versus just 16 giveaways and 47 hits with 5 blocks. It doesn’t make sense and to top it all off he’s only averaging 11:50 in ice time. I don’t know WTF is going on with him, but I’m going to put him on the Power Play and see what happens. The updated forward and defensive lines are below:

Trade @ Game 46
BOS.jpg
Analysis:
RW PWF Devante Smith-Pelly – 78ovr 25yrs – Low Top 9 F – 1yr $0.650M
I kind of liked DSP, but he’s a redundant piece here with Chiasson, Wilson, and Iginla. I finally got a decent offer for him and I took it. He was having a career year in Washington scoring 11g and 18pts in 44gp. I was tempted to hang onto him wondering if he’d developed a bit more. However, a 4th rounder for the upcoming draft was too enticing. Jarome Iginla will replace him in the lineup.

WSH 48-Game Recap
59pts – 27-16-5 – 2.94gfpg – 2.65gapg – 22.6%pp – 84.4%pk– 4-5-1(Last10)
3rd in Division – 5th in Conference – 7th in NHL
For a stretch we were struggling to score more than a goal a game and lost four in a row. I think we’re through it now and don’t feel any changes are required. Even with the recent losing streak we’re still in the top 10. Our top offensive players are: Ovechkin(58pts), Kuznetsov(42pts), Oshie(41pts), Backstrom(36pts), and Carlson(34pts). Other standouts include Jarome Iginla(6pts in 9gp), Lars Eller(24pts), Tom Wilson(21pts), Andre Burakovsky(19pts), and Brett Connolly(19pts). In net Holtby has proven why he’s the starter with a record of 23-14-5 versus Grubauers 4-3-0, as backup. I’ve been thoroughly impressed by our top line and Ovechkin(29g) is 3rd in goals scored and 1st in the NHL with 58 points. The man-child Tom Wilson is leading the league with 116 hits while producing on the 2nd line. After popping my cherry with the DSP trade I decided to update my trade block for the approaching deadline.

Long Term Injury @ Game 53
Braden Holbty suffered a torn hamstring and will be out until April. Mathias Niederberger was called up from the Bears to serve as Grubauers backup.

HER 60-Game Recap
68pts – 32-24-4– 2.33gfpg – 2.40gapg – 13.9%pp – 84.0%pk– 4-5-1(Last10)
6th in Division – 10th in Conference – 15th in AHL
We’re still hanging around the playoff picture, but have struggled without the reliable Niederberger in net. Phoenix Copley(2-4-1) has been terrible as his replacement and the assistant coach refuses to use Vanecek(11-4-0) as a starter. I don’t have time to hand hold so it is what it is. Our top offensive players are: Vrana(55pts), Barber(33pts), Graovac(29pts), Bourque(29pts), Walker(29pts), Bau(27pts), Boyd(27pts), and Mitchell(26pts). Other standouts are Wayne Simpson(20pts), Jonas Siegenthaler(18pts), and Madison Bowey(17pts). Our star player Jakub Vrana(24g) is tied for 5th in goals scored and is tied for 4th in the AHL with 55pts.

Trade Deadline
I was comfortable standing pat and didn't have much in terms of value on the block. So I was pleased to receive any attention at all.
VGK.jpg

Analysis:
C SNP Tim McGauley – 62ovr 22yrs – Low AHL Top 6 F – 2yr $0.650M
I know this wasn’t a great deal or anything, but it did free up a contract spot and creating two picks from one isn’t too shabby. Besides I can always trade for another 2019 3rd rounder before next year.

WSH 64-Game Recap
82pts – 38-20-6 – 3.03gfpg – 2.48gapg – 22.5%pp – 84.7%pk– 7-2-1(Last10)
3rd in Division – 3rd in Conference – 5th in NHL
The offense has been trending up ever since Iginla(12pts in 25gp) joined the lineup full-time. Backup netminder Philipp Grubauer(14-5-1) has upped his game after Holtby’s injury with a 92.1%sv and a 2.29gaa. Our top offensive players are: Ovechkin(85pts), Kuznetsov(59pts), Oshie(54pts), Backstrom(50pts), and Carlson(43pts). Ovi is 3rd in the NHL in goals scored(29g) and is 1st in scoring. Big Willy continues to lead the NHL with 152 hits and has already surpassed his career high with 12g and 29pts. The STL Blues had offered me two 1st rounders for Orlov and Wilson and 2 of my 2019 mid-range picks. It was tempting, but with the season we’re having I couldn’t justify it.

Long Term Injury @ Game 70
T.J. Oshie was injured with a broken hand and will be out until May. This will be a major opportunity for Brett Connolly to step up and break out. Should he collapse under the pressure of the increased responsibilities Jarome Iginla will take over. Oshie(25g) tied his career best of 60pts in 9 fewer games. Hopefully he heals up quicker than expected, but I’m considering him done for the year. Hershey Bears forward Riley Barber is now fully recovered from his injury and was recalled to replace Connolly on the 4th line.

WSH End of Season Recap
94pts – 44-32-6 – 2.98gfpg – 2.72gapg – 23.1%pp – 82.8%pk– 4-6-0(Last10)
4th in Division – 7th in Conference – 11th in NHL
We suffered through some adversity as the season was winding down. With 6 games remaining the following players were out due to injury: Holtby, Oshie, Wilson, and Orpik. Then Christian Djoos was injured with two games remaining, right after Orpik returned. We dropped all the way to the 1st Wild Card spot after the trio of Holtby, Oshie, and Wilson went out. The Riley Barber(-7 +/-) experiment was a complete failure and he was sent down to Hershey, after the last regular season game, and Jakub Vrana was called up. I hope he can bring the same offensive spark he showed in the AHL because we need something.

Analysis:
I want to say first and foremost that it’s stupid how Christian Djoos was not considered a rookie when he literally has zero NHL games played before this season. Alexander Ovechkin went berserk this season scoring 100+ points for the first time in eight years. He led the NHL in scoring and was tied for 2nd in goals scored. Evgeny Kunetsov was terrific centering the top line enabling Backstrom to manifest a 2nd scoring line. T.J. Oshie tied his career high of 60 points from four years ago and would’ve smashed it had he remained healthy. The following players also had career years in scoring: Burakovsky(42pts), Eller(40pts), Wilson(34pts), and Connolly(30pts). Tom Wilson(14g) deserves another mention for stepping up into the top 6 and excelling. If he hadn’t missed the final 8 games he’d have continued to lead the NHL in hits(172). Alex Chiasson(29pts) had a standout year and scored a career high 14 goals. Representing from the blue line we had Carlson(57pts), Orlov(28pts), and Niskanen(21pts). Rookie Christian Djoos(2g) finished with just 6 points and should’ve gained confidence from his play in the back half of the season. Fellow Rookie Chandler Stephenson(2g) scored 3pts as an adequate depth forward(12gp). It’s been tough ever since Holtby(25-16-5) went out and luckily Grubauer pulled off a winning record 20-16-1 to help us amble into the playoffs.

HER End of Season Recap
95pts – 44-31-7 – 2.41gfpg – 2.41gapg – 14.6%pp – 85.2%pk– 3-4-3(Last10)
4th in Division – 6th in Conference – 10th in AHL
We began to turn it around after Copley picked up his play and finished with a respectable record in a tough Division. It was so tough in fact that we narrowly captured our playoff berth, by a single point, as the Sound Tigers finished just behind us with 94pts and 11th in the AHL. It’s absurd to think the 11th best team won’t be in the playoffs, but that just happened. Another team from our Division, the Wolf Pack, finished 16th in the AHL with 89pts and will also miss out. Riley Barber(33pts in 51gp) has rejoined the team after a long injury absence and then an immediate callup to the NHL upon recovery. It’s a great boost to our offense, however losing Jakub Vrana(79pts) totally offsets that. Knowing this I reworked the lineup keeping that in mind.

Analysis:
We’re going to need Bourque(19g) to step up big time if we want to cover Vrana’s scoring. I think Barber(10g) will also need to bring his best game after being a sour note in the NHL for us to succeed in the playoffs. This was the year of the rookies in Hershey with several impressing me. Mason Mitchell(16) scored way more goals than I expected and led all rookies on the team in scoring with a tidy 40 points. He centered a 4th line with his older brother on the wing and perhaps that helped a bit. Hampus Gustafsson(17g) ended up scoring the most goals of all rookies and that also took me by surprise. I tried to groom the gigantic sniper Mathias Bau(12g) and he did alright. The defensemen Jonas Siegenthaler(7g) was terrific on the 2nd pairing while Lucas Johanssen(2g) was sort of meh on the 3rd pairing. At least he did gain a lot of experience this season and his progress was noticeable. Other than the rookies the only other decent players were on defense. Madison Bowey(12g) lived up to his billing leading the defense with 24pts and Jakub Jerabek(17pts) wasn’t too shabby either. Tyler Lewington was a fighting machine(28!) and he gave me, what I hope is, a brilliant idea. I’ll explain it later if I decide to implement it and if I re-sign him you’ll know I plan to.

EA really dropped the ball on not allowing custom rosters for the 32 team expansion mode. It is basically unplayable for me because of this. Hopefully fixed for NHL19.

WSH Lines:

Round 1: WSH(44-32-6) vs CAR(50-26-6)
Young sniper Jakub Vrana will join Washington’s top line after playing all season in Hershey. He was nearly a point per game player, scoring 29g and 79pts for the Bears. We’re stretched thin and due to salary cap restrictions, I’m unable to call anyone else up. I think we can pull off the upset, but can we survive long enough after that to make it matter?
Game 1: 0-5 CAR, ouch that was rough and this could get ugly fast.
Game 2: 3-2 WSH, Ovechkin put this team on his back netting 2g while Grubauer stopped 27s.
Game 3: 7-1 WSH, Ovechkin(1g) and Kuznetsov(2g) each scored 3pts while Grubauer(97.0%sv) was marvelous.
Game 4: 5-4 OT WSH, Burakovsky(2g) and Backstrom(1g) each scored 3pts while Iginla(1g) added 2pts of his own. Chiasson notched the game winner to bring the upset within our grasp. The bad news is that Jakub Vrana was injured with a neck strain until April 29th, missing the rest of this series. He’ll be replaced by Iginla and Tom Wilson has been given the go ahead to play injured(broken nose).
Game 5: 3-1 WSH, Philipp Grubauer(97.1%sv) made 34sv and Tom Wilson proved his toughness scoring the winning goal.

Round 2: WSH(44-32-6) vs NYR(48-29-5)
Tom Wilson and Braden Holtby are now fully healed. Grubauer is going to get the net until he falters. Jakub Vrana(3pts) could return as early as game three, but will likely be in for game four. Ovechkin(3g) has been a beast scoring 6pts in the 5gp. Andre Burakovsky(3g) and Nicklas Backstrom(2g) join him with 6pts as well. Evgeny Kuznetsov(2g) is right behind them with 5pts of his own and if we keep scoring like this I think we’ll be just fine.
Game 1: 3-0 WSH, Grubauer with the 21sv shutout and maintains his hold on the starting role.
Game 2: 2-1 OT WSH, Grubi! Grubi! Grubi! Could be heard throughout the arena as the extra period began. Philipp Grubauer(50sv) stood on his head stopping puck after puck all game and the fans had a feeling overtime would be no different. He didn’t disappoint turning aside all 14 shots until Alex Chiasson notched the winner. I’ve decided to give Grubauer a rest and assured him he will start in net for game four. Braden Holtby will start next game and Jakub Vrana will return bumping Iginla down and scratching Stephenson.
Game 3: 7-6 WSH, Ovechkin(1g) scored 3pts in this back and forth gun show featuring eight 1st period goals. Grubauer will return to the net next game.
Game 4: 3-2 OT WSH, Grubi chants returned to the air as he made 47sv to complete the sweep. Brett Connolly scored 2 goals including the winner.

Eastern Conference Finals: WSH(44-32-6) vs BOS(46-28-8)
Philipp Grubauer(94.2%sv and 1.72gaa) will remain in net with the hot hand. Our top offensive players are: Ovechkin(10pts), Backstrom(9pts), Kuznetsov(8pts), Burakovsky(8pts), Wilson(5pts in 5gp), Connolly(6pts), Eller(6pts), Orlov(6pts), and Carlson(6pts). Alex Chiasson(4g) has been clutch with 2 game winning goals. It’s hard to lose when your team is averaging 3.67gfpg and 2.44gapg. Christian Djoos is fully healed and will replace Kempny, who was so reliable it was tough taking him out. T.J. Oshie could return as early as game three and help provide that knockout punch.
Game 1: 0-4 BOS, we only mustered 23 shots on net and really hung Grubi out to dry. He’ll remain the starter for Game 2. Oshie is fully healed and will replace Vrana on the top line and he will scratch Iginla.
Game 2: 2-3 BOS, Grubauer(90.9%sv) was mediocre for the first time and Holtby will take over as the starter.
Game 3: 2-3 BOS, Dennis Wideman was injured and will be replaced by Iginla.
Game 4: 1-0 BOS, Brooks Orpik took a game misconduct penalty with 11:07 left in the 3rd on the PK(4v5). The score was 0-1 BOS at that point. Braden Holtby made an incredible 57 saves in the losing effort.
This was a fun playoff run and it was unique having Grubauer be the hero. Our top offensive players were: Ovechkin(10pts), Backstrom(10pts), Burakovsky(9pts), Kuznetsov(9pts), Eller(7pts), and Orlov(7pts). Rookie Jakub Vrana(1g) scored 5pts while the veteran Jarome Iginla(1g) fizzled out with just 2pts. Grubauer finished with a 93.2%sv and a 2.04gaa while Holtby had a 92.0%sv and a 3.35gaa. Christian Djoos(-1 +/-) appeared to turtle under the pressure and I should’ve left Kempny in. I’m unhappy with the result being a sweep, but I’m ok with reaching the ECF in my first season.

Round 1: HER(44-31-7) vs WBS(48-27-7)
I’m feeling pretty good about the lineup and think we can pull it off.
Game 1: 3-4 OT WBS, we battled valiantly firing 42 shots on net, but could not finish them off.
Game 2: 3-4 WBS, outshot them slightly 36 to 33 and can’t seem to stop them from scoring. Vitek Vanecek will start next game.
Game 3: 6-4 HER, Graovac notched the hat-trick as Vanecek struggled making just 19sv. Phoenix Copley will start next game and at least the team seemed to respond.
Game 4: 1-2 WBS, Michael Leighton(97.1%sv) of the baby Penguins was the hero of this series. We outshot them 35 to 20 and now I’m wondering if Vanecek could’ve stopped 19 again…LOL
We had a terrific 3.25gfpg and a 22.2%pp/100%pk! However, we finished with a 3.50gapg and couldn’t find goaltending. The team really missed Mathias Niederberger and this is an area I want to work on for next season. Our top offensive players were: Barber(5pts), Graovac(4pts), Simpson(4pts), Boyd(3pts), Bourque(3pts), and Mitchell(3pts). I’m happy with how my team played outside and around the net. Oh, and apparently the assistant coach switched the goalies in game three 7m into the game…WTF! Vitek Vanecek(100%sv) stopped 2 shots and was replaced by Phoenix Copley who finished the playoffs with a miserable 86.7%sv and 3.46gaa.

RW TWF T.J. Oshie – 85ovr 31yrs – Top 6 F – 8yr $5.630M
I know he had a terrific regular season, but we really did get by just fine without him. Jakub Vrana looked good during his stint on the top line and that made Oshie expendable. I guess he drove his value way up, with the 60 point season, because I could not refuse two 1st rounders.

This wasn’t an amazing draft for me, potential wise, but I’m quite happy with the prospects. I got a good mix of young guys(17yrs) I can leave unsigned to develop and guys who are ready for the AHL. I also passed on a decent Center prospect(Jan Jenik) late in the 4th for another defender. I’ll probably sign three or four of these guys to entry level deals.

Re-Sign Phase Recap
Contracts: 42/50 – Cap Space: $8.815M
I released several players and a few unsigned prospects to clear space on the roster. I had to really negotiate hard and overpay John Carlson and Marcel Goc. I signed four recently drafted prospects and one of my predecessors’ draftees. I’ve got enough Cap left over to sign a significant player or two and will use the rest to strengthen our depth.

Started a Franchise mode with the Leafs with the fantasy draft turned on a few days ago.

Finally managed to win the Cup in 2020-21 with a roster of

Nick Ritchie (88) / Connor McDavid (96) / Jesse Puljujarvi (89)
Kyle Connor (86) / Elias Pettersson (84) / Josh Ho-Sang (83)
Owen Tippett (81) / Ryan Getzlaf (82) / Christian Fischer (83)
Jacob De La Rose (77) / Christoffer Ehn (77) / Serron Noel (77)

Timothy Liljegren (83) / Seth Jones (89)
Jake Bean (85) / Ryan Merkley (87)
Olli Juolevi (80) / Niklas Hansson (78)

Thatcher Demko (89)
Andrew Hammond (78)

Trading a 2nd rounder for Getzlaf before the season turned out to be huge win for me as he had the Cup winning goal against Murray of the Presidents trophy winning Canucks in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Unsurprisingly McDavid won the Conn Smythe with 34 points in 24 games. Also got the Art Ross (101 pts), Hart, Lady Byng, Selke and Lindsay.

2018-2019

I made some big trades during the offseason and released several players. This season the roster will feel more like my own instead of like playing with someone else’s toys.

Free Agent Acquisitions:
HYB Laurent Brossoit – 75ovr 25yrs – Med Fringe Starter – 2yr $0.850M
OFD Mike Green – 82ovr 32yrs – Top 4 D – 1yr $5.000M
TWD Jack Johnson – 79ovr 31yrs – Top 4 D – 3yr $2.500M
TWD Toby Enstrom – 78ovr 33yrs – Top 6 D – 1yr $1.900M
OFD Raphael Diaz – 75ovr 32yrs – 7th D – 1yr $0. 800M
RW PWF Nick Ritchie – 81ovr 22yrs – Low Elite – 1yr $3.600M – ANA Offer Sheet 2019 2nd
LW SNP Shane Prince – 76ovr 25yrs – High Top 9 F – 1yr $0.900M
LW TWF Oscar Moller – 75ovr 29yrs – Bottom 6 F – 2yr $0.875M
C PLY Mark Letestu – 77ovr 33yrs – Top 9 F – 1yr $0.950M
Analysis:
Some fans might be perplexed as to why Mike Green has been brought back into the fold three years after his release. The answer is simple, he was the best available replacement and to be honest I love his game. I also took care of the goalie situation and shored up our defensive depth. I sent an offer sheet to Ritchie after Orpik’s contract was expunged and snagging him for a 2nd rounder is a steal.

Trade:
TOR.jpg
Analysis:
DFD Brooks Orpik – 77ovr 37yrs – 7th D – 1yr $5.385M
I had already consigned myself to the fact that I’d be stuck with this contract until it’s expiration. So, receiving this offer after I’d already signed all my free agents was a delight! I think the Maple Leafs were trying to get to the Cap floor, but whatever the case I’m extremely pleased. This freed up a roster spot and over $5M in salary!!! To think I had actually contemplated buying him out, LOL.

RW SNP Jakub Vrana – 82ovr 22yrs – Med Top 6 F – 1yr $2.500M
A lock to make the team. Competing for a top line role.
LW PWF Nick Ritchie – 83ovr 22yrs – Low Elite – 1yr $3.600M
Another lock for the squad. Competing for a top 6 role.
TWF Chandler Stephenson – 75ovr 24yrs – High AHL Top 6 F – 1yr $0.650M
Played as a depth forward last season and is looking to earn a bigger role. The competition is steep this year and he’ll have to produce to get my attention. It’s unlikely he’ll make the cut.
LW SNP Shane Prince – 78ovr 25yrs – High Top 9 F – 1yr $0.900M
Good chance of making the team. Looking to earn a bottom 6 or depth role.
RW SNP Riley Barber – 76ovr 24yrs – Low Top 9 F – 1yr $0.725M
Had a miserable 12 game tryout as the season was winding down last year, -7 +/- rating. He clearly wasn’t ready and I’m not sure much has changed. I don’t think he’ll make the squad, but I want to gauge where he’s at.
C TWF Tyler Graovac – 74ovr 25yrs – Low Bottom 6 F – 1yr $0.675M
I don’t think he’s NHL ready, but I’d like to see what he’s got because he didn’t develop in the AHL.
TWD Jack Johnson – 79ovr 31yrs – Top 4 D – 3yr $2.500M
A lock to make the roster, but not an automatic starter. He’ll need to earn it and I’m sure he will. Competing for 2nd or 3rd pairing role.
TWD Toby Enstrom – 78ovr 33yrs – Top 6 D – 1yr $1.900M
Not an automatic starter, but he’s definitely on the team. Competing for 2nd or 3rd pairing role.
TWD Christian Djoos – 77ovr 24yrs – High Top 6 D – 1yr $0.650M
Played on the 2nd pairing last season and wasn’t a detriment. However, he’s slightly regressed and may not be ready. Competing for a 2nd or 3rd pairing role.
TWD Madison Bowey – 78ovr 23yrs – Med Top 4 D – 1yr $0.850M
A lock to make the team, but must earn a starting role. Competing for a 3rd pairing spot.

WSH Preseason Recap(4-3-0)
Congratulations to Toby Enstrom, Shane Prince, Christian Djoos, and Madison Bowey for making the starting lineup. The veteran Jack Johnson will start the year as our 7th defensemen and Chandler Stephenson will resume his role of depth forward. Jakub Vrana will begin his rookie season on the top line after scoring 3g and 7pts. Nick Ritchie earned a role on the 2nd line alongside superstar center Nicklas Backstrom. I feel terrible for Andre Burakovsky(3g) being relegated to the 3rd line after scoring 6pts. I’m tempted to try him in place of Wilson on the 2nd line, but I prefer to have a right-handed threat on every line. I’ll be sure to give him plenty of special team opportunities. Brett Connolly(2g) is suffering from the same logjam after scoring 4pts from the 4th line.

WSH Regular Season
I feel the team is even stronger than last season and fully expect a Cup Finals appearance.

I lost the earlier recaps for both teams and will have to begin at game 40. Not much has been missed as the lineup is still the same. I did make an adjustment to the 3rd lines strategies and a few special teams’ tweaks, but that’s about it. Our top offensive players are: Ovechkin(49pts), Kuznetsov(45pts), Backstrom(41pts), Burakovsky(31pts), Vrana(27pts), Letestu(23pts), Carlson(22pts), Orlov(22pts), and Ritchie(20pts). Our defense looks good and the youngsters Djoos(4pts) and Bowey(5pts) are playing well. Mike Green(9pts) has been adequate, but I expected more than 2ppp after 39gp. I made some adjustments to the 2nd unit in hopes of sparking something. Our Captain(Ovi) leads the league with 28 goals, but has fallen to 3rd in scoring with 49pts. Kuznetsov(6g) is right behind him in 4th with 46pts. Ovechkin is also 2nd in hits with 96. The young and sensational Jakub Vrana(5g) is tied for the rookie scoring lead with 27pts.

HER 40-Game Recap
50pts – 21-11-8 – 2.58gfpg – 2.15gapg – 23.3%pp – 88.2%pk– 4-3-3(Last10)
2nd in Division – 4th in Conference – 7th in AHL
I’m happy with how this group is playing and a new start has emerged for the Bears. Our top offensive players are: Gustafsson(33pts), Barber(27pts), Bourque(26pts), Moller(25pts), and Goc(22pts). Our defense is led by Raphael Diaz’s 16pts with Johansen(7pts) and Siegenthaler(6pts) also contributing a bit. Tyler Lewington already has 12 fights and I’ll go ahead and explain what I’m using him for. He’s on the 3rd pairing with rookie Livio Stadler(5pts). Playing in that role means you aren’t on the ice much, for instance Lewington is averaging 13:23 minutes. I wanted Stadler to get on the ice more than that so I put him on the PK and 4on4. I’m not sure if Lewington is getting instigating minors or what, but he’s got 85pim and his 12 fights would equal 60 of that. In any case I think its working and Stadler is averaging 16:53 minutes a game. My rookies are playing well, but I’m annoyed with the game not recognizing players are rookies when they clearly are. I literally just drafted Stadler(5pts) and Kryski(17pts) and signed them to contracts during the offseason. Both are not recognized as rookie skaters… Which makes no sense because I drafted and signed Kosorenkov(13pts) from the same draft and he’s recognized along with Damien Riat(15pts).

WSH 60-Game Recap
70pts – 33-23-4 – 3.00gfpg – 2.68gapg – 18.4%pp – 79.3%pk– 2-8-0(Last10)
1st in Division – 5th in Conference – 9th in NHL
As you can see from our last 10 games we’ve struggled coming into this recap. Andre Burakovsky went down with an injury and Jay Beagle has struggled in his absence. During this period I received several tantalizing offers for Madison Bowey, but decided to hold onto him, in hopes for an even better return, as the deadline approaches. Our top offensive players are: Ovechkin(68pts), Kuznetsov(64pts), Backstrom(57pts), Vrana(40pts), and Burakovsky(38pts). Jakub Vrana has taken the rookie scoring lead while Ovechkin has fallen to 2nd in goals and tied for 3rd in scoring. Ovi does still lead the league in hits with 145. On defense Carlson(32pts) and Orlov(28pts) are a dominant top pairing and youngsters Djoos(7pts) and Bowey(5pts) are doing well on the 3rd. It’s the 2nd pairing of Enstrom(4pts) and Green(12pts) that I’m expecting a bit more from. I’ve adjusted their strategies to allow for more offensive freedom. In net Holtby(25-19-4) has struggled this season but, has gotten great goal support, 90.6%sv and a 2.71gaa. Meanwhile backup Grubauer(9-3-0) has been terrific posting a 93.5%sv with a 2.14gaa.

HER 60-Game Recap
74pts – 33-19-8 – 2.52gfpg – 2.08gapg – 18.9%pp – 88.3%pk– 6-4-0(Last10)
3rd in Division – 7th in Conference – 10th in AHL
I’m really pleased with how this team is playing and the veteran presence Moller, Bourque, and Goc. That trio is the heart of this squad and they’re lifting up the youngsters. Our top offensive players are: Gustafsson(48pts), Barber(46pts), Bourque(39pts), Moller(36pts), and Goc(35pts). Both netminders have played great this season with young backup Vitek Vanecek(8-2-1) being particularly impressive, 94.1%sv and a 1.52gaa. Laurent Brossoit(25-18-7) is no slouch either managing a 92.5%sv with a 2.13gaa. Our top rookie is Jake Kryski(25pts) even though the game doesn’t recognize him as such.

Trade Deadline
I had another bite for Bowey, but it wasn’t what I was looking for.

WSH End of Season Recap
92pts – 43-33-6 – 2.87gfpg – 2.77gapg – 16.6%pp – 79.0%pk– 4-5-1(Last10)

We were eliminated from contention with 1 game remaining on our schedule. I can’t say I’m happy, but I know we’re a good team and one that deserves to be in the playoffs. It was a lack of effort on my part after the trade deadline and I take full responsibility. I didn’t think Jay Beagle’s regression was that serious, but the 3rd line and 2nd defensive pairing stunk it up after the deadline. I’m also very disappointed with Holtby’s performance.

I thought we’d make it in easily, but we just qualified by winning our final regular season game. Our playoff chances will all come down to goaltending and if we can ride a hot goalie. Either Brossoit or Vanecek are capable of streaking us through a round or two. Then we’ll need our reliable veterans to step up and produce. I think it could happen but, it’s also just as likely that we’ll flame out in 3-4 games.

The following players look promising and have earned an invite to next year’s training camp: Gustafsson, Barber, Kryski, and Mitchell. Other players who could earn themselves an invite through post season play are: Graovac, Riat, Kosorenkov, and Johansen. This is an exciting time for these youngsters as the big club missed the playoffs this year and that means changes are coming. It’s likely several roster spots will be open and up for grabs during next years camp.

Game 1: 1-2 PRO, Chad Johnson made 33sv and held us off during a 3rd period featuring 14 shots against for the baby Bruins. Raphael Diaz was injured and Michal Kempny will replace him.
Game 2: 3-1 HER, Goc scored 2g while Brossoit made 24sv to even the series up.
Game 3: 1-0 HER, Brossoit stifled the Bruins offense making 25sv and Bau notched the winner.
Game 4: 3-4 OT PRO, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson scored 2g for the baby Bruins and forced a final elimination game. Connor Hobbs was injured and will be replaced by Jakub Jerabek
Game 5: 2-1 HER, Brossoit made 19 stops and Bourque scored the winner during the 1st period.

Round 2: HER(42-30-10) vs CHA(49-26-7
We’ll be without Connor Hobbs for the entire series, but will get Diaz back by game two or three. We have good defensive depth and that was on display in the final game of the previous series. If Brossoit stays hot I think we can pull another upset.
Game 1: 1-6 CHA, the offense disappeared firing a measly 16 shots on goal. Raphael Diaz will return bumping Kempny down and scratching Jerabek.
Game 2: 3-4 OT CHA, Walker provided 3 apples while Graovac(1g) scored 2pts in a tightly contested affair.
Game 3: 4-1 HER, Brossoit made 27sv while Kosorenkov scored the game winner.
Game 4: 3-2 OT HER, Brossoit stopped 32s while Barber(1g) scored 2pts and Gustafsson notched the winner. Jonas Siegenthaler was injured and will be replaced by Jerabek.
Game 5: 3-0 HER, Kosorenkov(1g) scored 2pts while Brossoit stymied the opposition with 21sv. Connor Hobbs will return to the lineup next game bumping Kempny over and scratching Jerabek.
Game 6: 3-5 CHA, Veteran Matt Cullen(2g) scored 4pts for the Checkers forcing game 7.
Game 7: 1-3 CHA, Julien Gauthier(1g) and Booe Nieves(1g) scored 2pts apiece.
We failed to take advantage of PP opportunities(10%pp) and ultimately were outscored more often than not. Our top offensive players were: Barber(11pts), Goc(8pts), Bau(7pts), Gustafsson(7pts), Walker(7pts), Moller(7pts), Bourque(6pts), and Graovac(6pts). I’m sure all the defensive injuries didn’t help and I failed to realize Kempny(-5 +/-) was struggling. Laurent Brossoit(6-4-2) finished with a 91.8%sv and a 2.31gaa.

During the last two days, I started a new Franchise Mode with the Russia Red Army as the 32nd team in the NHL. The only rule is that I can only draft, trade and sign for Russian players. In the expansion draft, if the team did not have a Russian player available, I had to take an expiring contract to release in the resign phase.

I already simulated two seasons. Russia Red Army finished with 45 points in each season (20 wins, 19 wins) but saw some growth from their younger players. One interesting note, I never made a top 10 selection in either of the three draft since there were no good Russian players available, thus I had to trade away the pick. In my first draft, I traded the 2nd overall pick (Nolan Patrick) to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Nikita Zadorov (80 overall + medium top 4 D, 22) + Mikhail Grigorenko (80 overall + medium top 6, 22 ) + 2nd round draft pick 2020.

It's a challenging GM mode with trade difficult to high. We will probably make the playoffs in year 6/7, unless if Panarin or other star players drop to Free Agency.

Definitely the best I've seen, but I always lose interest way before this point because it's too easy. However, if you try using some self-imposed rules you can have a much more challenging experience. I find the following to be the most fun and competitive. Requiring great skill and knowledge of the game in order to succeed.

Self-Imposed Rules:
1. May not propose trades or edit trade offers received.
2. May not sign free agents who require an Entry Level Contract.

Anyone else deep into a be a GM game and noticing that 90% of first round picks are from the WHL every year? I don't think I've ever seen any game generated player go top 10 who wasn't Canadian and from the WHL. Some years there are literally no first or second round picks from Russia, Sweden, Liiga, etc. Is this just weird luck I'm having or do others get this too?
