Rosenthal: Max Scherzer prefers NL West contenders, sources say, and pace of talks accelerating - The Athletic

Padres manager Jayce Tingler and Max Scherzer just missed overlapping at the University of Missouri. Scherzer was teammates at Missouri with Padres bullpen catcher Brad Flanders for one season. All three remain friends.

None of that might matter in the hours ahead as the Nationals try to negotiate a trade with a team for which Scherzer will waive his no-trade rights. But Scherzer’s preference, according to major-league sources, is one of the three NL West contenders — the Padres, Dodgers and Giants. And the Nationals, interested executives say, want to get a deal in place as quickly as possible. That way, they would create ample time before Friday’s trade deadline to entice Scherzer to waive the no-trade protection he enjoys as a player with 10 years of service, five consecutive with the same club.

Other teams also are in the mix for Scherzer who, because of deferrals in his contract, will not be paid the prorated portion of his $35 million salary until 2028. His luxury tax hit for the final third of the season still would be approximately $10 million, but in pure cash alone he would be affordable even to low-revenue contenders. One of those teams, the Rays, are one of three from the AL East talking to the Nationals, along with the higher-revenue Red Sox and Blue Jays, according to The Athletic’s Jayson Stark.

Twins trade chatter: What we're hearing about José Berríos, Byron Buxton and Kenta Maeda as deadline approaches - The Athletic

• If the Twins did deal away a Berríos or Buxton-type player, they’d be far more interested in adding prospects who are projected to be big leaguers no later than 2023 as opposed to lower-level prospects slated for the big leagues in 2025 and 2026.

• While the Blue Jays have very intriguing arms available in right-handers Alek Manoah and Nate Pearson, the Twins have expressed more interest in Toronto’s next tier of prospects, a group that is heavy on position players. Austin Martin, Jordan Groshans and Orelvis Martinez are all listed as shortstops for a team that has Bo Bichette at the major-league level.

Kevin Smith with two doubles today and Zach Logue with a great outing (4IP, 0hits, 0 earned runs, 1 BB, 8K)

You'd have to think Smith is either getting traded or being called up soon. We should really be figuring out what kind of player he is at the major league level.

Prime candidate t go to the Cubs imo. I doubt he is enough to get Bryant or Kimbrel but he could be a 2ndary piece.

Not sure if legit, but OK, f*** it. This is the one you might have to do.

Am I wrong to want to pay up more for him than Berrios? I think Lopez has 3 more arb years after this one and is 25 years old. I am not sure I want to pay for Berrios with 1 year left and then be forced to pay him whatever he wants to extend him given the prospect capital it will take.

I truly have no idea if that account is legitimate or not. I have my doubts - but then again, Springers signing was broken by a guy most of us have never heard of while he was sitting in a barbers chair. But, besides the point, I would not be shocked if the Marlins genuinely were interested in dealing Lopez. They have tons of pitchers who are either MLB ready and contributing or close to MLB ready and projected to be good. I saw earlier they were looking to acquire long term pieces for CF and C, which are both positions the Blue Jays have *some* depth they could deal from (depending on whether or not they view Martin as a center fielder). Different GM's, but the Marlins have followed this method before by trading Gallen to Arizona for Chisholm. I am with you though, I would much rather trade for Lopez and his more years of control than Berrios who, while being a good starter, has never truly taken that step to the next level that he will likely be valued at, in my opinion.

Eduardo Escobar was my Jays position player deadline prediction but he was just traded to the Brewers. There goes that prediction.

Ross still has time to call Arizona and get Asdrubal to check off one of my deadline predictions. Also, be on standby for a shower in case Twitter rumours start heating up.

Milwaukee didn’t give up much. A 26 year old 3B killing AAA pitching and 18 year old with raw tools playing very well in rookie ball.

If the Jays intend to buy and fix all their holes then the price for Escobar would have been Kevin Smith and a raw middle infielder we rarely talk about. That’s a price I would have considered if we were looking to upgrade.
