Would have preferred another reliever but seems like price was very high for high end pitchers. Blue Jays probably think they can fix Brad Hand. They got their starter at least.

No excuses. Better make the post season the next two years while Berrios is here.
Part of the problem with that is there's 3 teams in front of us in our own division, then pile onto that all the WC-competing teams.... I hate this trade.

I was fine sitting out the craziness and letting things happen organically. Free agency could have been an avenue to address for next season. I did not, and do not, think we have a realistic shot at the playoffs this season.

Keep in mind, SWR has no breaking ball to speak of and lost a few ticks. There was a quoted tweet earlier that pointed out that that is clearly a reliever profile.

And he doesn't throw hard enough to be projectable as a dominant end of the pen guy.

Martin was a 5 tool player who suddenly lost 2 of them this year.

This is what made me calm down after first reading about this trade. Thanks to all for posting this info for the guys like me who don't contribute anything but still want to read about this :thumbu:

Soria is another nice add to the BP. Still I don't think we did enough to justify the price we gave up for Berrios. He's a good pitcher though so we'll see.

So Shaprio drafted him at 5th overall if that is the scouting report that is some bad drafting

He’s got a high floor. He’s pretty much a sure bet to be a major leaguer but his potential is limited by his ability to:

1. Hit for power
2. Play defence

And even his speed isn’t great. To compare him to Madrigal, there isn’t a tool that Martin has that is a clear cut grade above him. The power should be a bit better than Madrigal’s but he’s also not touted as a generational hit for average type of guy and there’s no position that he’s plus at defensively.

Twins trade José Berríos to Blue Jays for 2 prospects - The Athletic

What does Berríos bring to the Blue Jays?

Kaitlyn McGrath, Blue Jays beat writer: The Blue Jays are in win-now mode, with an explosive big-league offense that has a plus-97 run differential. That ranks fourth in the American League, but the team needed a boost in the starting rotation, especially if they want to make a push for the playoffs.

Berríos now gives the team a solid No. 3 starter, who will slot in behind Hyun Jin Ryu and Robbie Ray. It should also push one of Ross Stripling or Steven Matz to the bullpen, which can bolster that group too with a long guy.

And, bonus, Berríos, isn't a free agent until after next season, so he'll be part of next year's rotation, as well. That's smart planning by the Blue Jays, who could see both Ray and Matz exit in free agency after this season.

How happy should the Twins be with the return?

Aaron Gleeman, Twins beat writer: Very. Trading a player as valuable and well-liked as Berríos was never going to feel good, but the Twins maximized their return with a half-dozen contenders looking to add the team-controlled frontline starter.

Martin was the No. 5 pick in last year's draft and the 22-year-old shortstop/center fielder has a gaudy .424 on-base percentage at double-A in his taste of pro ball. Woods Richardson is a borderline top-100 global prospect averaging 13 strikeouts per nine innings at double-A as a 20-year-old.

They aren't without possible drawbacks — Martin's power is in question and so far, Woods Richardson is more about potential more than performance — but this is clearly a strong return for 1 1/2 seasons of Berríos.

I'd rather they had traded Groshans or one of the other infielders rather than a potential outfielder (seriously, who is the next best outfield prospect?), but oh well. You have to assume Ray and Matz will walk next year, so they HAD to get a starter.

The thing is I'm not sure Martin will translate all that well to being a ML outfielder. He doesn't have great speed and his arm isn't great either.

Nothing brings out radical truth/honesty on a prospect then trading him away. Hard to judge any prospect at age 22 but they've obviously decided his lack of power is a big enough concern to risk trading him away.

Rotation and bullpen is looking good. Time is going to start going against us, need to go on a big run here soon.
