First, I think I may have been a bit too harsh with borderline. Second, Martin was ranked second before the draft among the experts so if Martin misses, it just wasn't the Jays management.
I mean they leveraged him into Berrios so it doesn’t matter anymore.

Its worth noting that because we are developing players in such abundance and with the need to protect players on the 40-man roster or risk losing them for nothing on the rule-5 that we are going to likely motivated to ship out surplus prospects who are going to need protection in the next year or two. In other words, don't get upset over trading prospects.
Woodman I’m taking deep breaths. Don’t push me. I’m cooling on the deal but neither of them needed to be protected. Martin is years away from requiring that. I have no issues moving prospects for major league talent but this on the surface seemed like a massive overpay in contrast to other deals. But I get what you’re saying

This is what I’ve been saying. They maximized value on SWR before teams started to get wary of his struggles this year. Martin is a interesting prospect but definitely isn’t a sure thing.
I'm coming around a little bit on it after reading this post but I'm still disappointed haha

So Shaprio drafted him at 5th overall if that is the scouting report that is some bad drafting
People aren't perfect. Can't get too hung up if it was a bad pick (I still don't think it was yet, he was very highly touted at that draft)

Whenever prospects are dealt away I'm always reminded of this:

I think the price was a bit steep, but if some of the shine has come off Martin this quickly it's probably not a terrible idea to get value for him now while the org still can. It's also funny watching the reaction to Woods Richardson considering the standard refrain when he was acquired was that he and Kay weren't good enough to be the return for Stroman. Now he's too good to be the price for Barrios in spite of the fact that his stock has been inconsistent in the last couple years?

If the Jays gave up Martin then they have a poor scouting staff. He was picked 5th overall -oops. Way too early to give up on him.

Or maybe they dealt him before the rest of the league figures out he's not nearly as good as his draft pedigree suggests.

I'd rather a team make a bad pick and rectify it quickly than hold onto the prospect too long because they dont want to admit they might have made a poor selection.

I mean they had him for an entire year at their development complex. They have now seen him play half a season where he cant really play any defensive position well and he's hit for almost no power while sporting underwhelming exit velocities and it looks like theres some definite real concerns around his ability.

I'd say if the Jays thought Martin was going to become a offensive superstar, they wouldnt be making this trade.

Just a reminder to prospect lovers, sometimes 10 top picks work out:

2005 Ricardo Romero LHP CS Fullerton 6
1997 Vernon Wells OF Arlington, TX 5
1996 Billy Koch RHP Clemson U 4
1978 Lloyd Moseby 1B Oakland, CA 2

And sometimes, they absolutely do not:

1983 Matt Stark C Hacienda Heights, CA 9
1982 Augie Schmidt SS U of New Orleans 2
1981 Matt Williams RHP Rice U 5
1980 Garry Harris SS San Diego, CA 2
1979 Jay Schroeder C Pacific Palisades, CA 3

Jeez, our scouting department in the early 80s was...underwhelming, to say the least! What a run of crap...

Kinda surprised no Story trade there. Seems like Colorado backed off on going full on rebuild. Apparently they are going to QO Gray in the offseason.

At least keeping Gray makes sense because he has said publicly he wants to stay long term. But Story isn't going back, getting nothing for him is silly.

Scouting report?
He's been around forever and had some big years with Kansas City years ago where he was one of the leagues better closers. Throws around 93 with good off speed stuff. He will be an upgrade over someone like Dolis if they send him packing. I am guessing he pitches in both mid relief and later innings depending on matchups. His fastball is getting hit harder than usual but he hasn't lost velocity on it so perhaps there are some changes that can be made there. He has also had some bad BABIP luck. Given he likely won't cost much he's a decent addition and wouldn't be shocked if he ends up somewhat like the Benoit of 2021.

Keep in mind deals will still likely be getting reported on even after the 4 PM deadline

I wonder if the backlash they got when they did the Arenado trade, scared them off.

Story has some genuine concerns this year so if teams weren't willing to give up a valuable asset for him they are probably better off either taking the comp pick for him or hoping he accepts and they can try this all over again next season.

I know, I was just thinking Donaldson knows that Toronto and Canada are awesome :D Even though it ended kinda sour, he still had his absolute best year here and lots of good memories. You would think you wouldn't reject a place that you have fond memories, for the most part, of.
Donaldson's gripe wasn't about the city, or the country. It was management and how he felt they handled his injury situation. Lot of finger pointing there. Doubt very much he'd ever come back under the current regime, or even ownership.

Yeah I remember reading that his arm has been a huge issue for him.

In fairness, most of us liked that return on Stroman at the time.
