The head coach has the most influence on a player's deployments.

I can't believe there are people defending this clown.
How weird that anyone would feel sympathy for a guy that lost his job for asking to see personal photos in order to get to know his team better when a player, rather than discuss it with a team member, friend or family member, took it to the media.

If Babcock stole someone's phone -- that's different.

Totally fine. But you're also making a leap in logic. He asks to see a phone, the player is uncomfortable, the player gives Babs the phone. He didn't sleuth, he didn't hit a player and take the phone out of his hands. Nothing like that has been reported, right?

People are assuming everything from he hacked the phones, he stole the phones, he took photos and shared them on the internet.

He made a request that a couple of players (maybe only one!) didn't like. And that player didn't go to the team captain, the GM, a trusted friend, the hr department or his agent. He went to BizNasty.

It's a goofy story, and whatever you might think of Mike Babcock's reputation, there's absolutely nothing wrong with asking to see personal photos in order to get know the team.

Yea, let them show what they want to show. Don’t ask for their phone and scroll through it yourself. Nobody has the right to look through your phone. You show what you want to show, at your own pace.

And if Jarmo didn't like a players deployment he would fire Babcock.
That's not how that works. Maybe eventually, Babcock would be in the hot seat if the team is losing and the GM is fed up. But that could take years.

Why would you feel sympathy for a guy with such a terrible history of mistreating his players?

Even asking to browse an employee's phone is already over the line.

The NHL wants to continue re-hiring chewed up and spit out members of their old boy's club and going through re-treads instead of hiring innovative and progressive young talent, this is what they'll get.

League is stuck in the past just as much as Babcock is.

Rofl at the idea that Babcock asked to scroll through Jarmo's phone during the interview
Jarmo: So why do you think you're the right guy for the job ?

Mike Babcock: Let me see pics of your family to see if you're the kind of guy I want to work for.

Jarmo: But I'm interviewing you ?

Mike Babcock: Hand it over bud.

Jarmo: God damn it you're hired.

I don't think you can blame Jarmo for hiring Babcock and giving him a second change. You can still do your due diligence and still be wrong about something.

However when the accusation came out and then the Blue Jackets did a 10 second investigation and basically swept it under the rug, then it became a fireable offense. He clearly didn't do due diligence there.

Jarmo should be fired.
100% this. If you hire a known bully and get a report that he's doing it again you don't do a half assed investigation.

Who the hell thinks the best way to see photos of a player is asking for their phone? Why would anyone think the best way to get to know a person is to personally scroll their phone? Why not ask for a photo to be sent to them.

Why are you believing Babcock on this?

This coach has the most players who will publically critique him. Jason York is a laid back guy and called Babcock one of the most two faced people he has ever met. Frank Corrado said that Babcock cares nothing for his players, getting to know them , and only cares about himself. Chelios unloaded on how he treats veterans and tried to bench him in the outdoor game to prove a point to Chelios and his GM.

At every stop there are stories of power abuse and toxic methods. But yes, poor Babcock was wronged because he innocently wanted to scroll pictures.

Even tho Biz broke the story Whitney is going to be insufferable for weeks now. Biz is at least a little humble.

I am presuming the story is bigger than just phone pictures. Otherwise seems a bit much for a guy to resign over.

I’ve listened to id say 5-8 different podcasts on the situation. Read a few articles as well. The consensus is pretty clear. It was one younger athlete that we know of that was uncomfortable. Many podcast and radio shows asked former players both in Detroit and Toronto if they had dealt with this situation while they had Babcock as a coach. Some said yes, some said no. Some said they didn’t mind it, some said they weren’t asked to share photos but would have said no.

I’m not defending Babcock at all, I think it’s a weird request from a coach. But I think if any other coach asks the same question it’s a non story. But because Babcock has a history of manipulation and mind games his motivation behind this is questioned. Don’t think it’s as Egregious as people are making it to seem tbh.

This is there best ay to put it IMO.

I'm not saying he was "wronged." But on the other hand, you had guys saying that it wasn't a big deal. Some guys weren't comfortable.

Obviously Babcock has made a few enemies. That doesn't mean that the facts of this situation add up to bullying, stealing a phone, invading privacy, representing the toxicity of hockey culture, or embodying evil.

Seems to be a situation that's far more clumsy than malicious. Yet he has plenty of money and so forth, a gold medal, memories of winning the Cup with guys who showed a lot more resilience than these Blue Jackets guys who ended his career have.

  • Haha
Reactions: Voight
Babcock has a helluva resume so I doubt that.
Did he massively tilt the results in his favor during his career? I mean, it's not like he was a bad coach or anything, and I'm pretty convinced that, all in all, he was a slight positive, but I'm not quite sure the "Results achieved" column is massively better than the (obviously theoretical) "Results expected" column, considering the rosters he had at his disposal.

Anything in the past decade? How far back do you have to go to get anything worth mentioning? And when you finally get that far back, can you isolate his specific contributions to those achievements, or did he just fail to get in the way of teams that were powerhouses with or without him?

Does anyone have any idea or any real reports on how he performed with Saskatchewan? When he was coaching the university?
