I'm confused. Are you implying that the players were upset that Babcock was hard on them for their on-ice performance? They haven't even played a game yet. Heck, they haven't even had a practice yet.
I'm saying if you're so upset that he asked to see your phone, it doesn't bode well when a coach says "ya stunk." Look, Babcock undoubtedly makes people uncomfortable. We who don't have access to the truth can take one side or another. But somewhere in the middle, there is someone who took a dispute between himself and the Head Coach and took it to the media, derailed the season and got a guy fired. If this was a racial slur, something sexual, something life-threatening... totally different. A locker room is not a "safe space," it's a place where honesty and accountability are needed.

What does that picture of a locker room have to do with snatching phones?

Yeah, because as it turns out the "Most Worthless Generation" the Boomers did pretty much everything completely bassackwards, including fielding these cultural and intellectual dinosaurs like Babcock, and my generation X and others following are now having to clean up their messes not just in hockey but in society generally.
And us older folks made a fortune doing it. ;)

My understanding is that Babs resigned so he won't get paid.

I wouldn’t take it too literally. In a situation like this, the resignation is often brokered under certain conditions. The main one being a severance of some sort.

Resigning unilaterally with no warning is what might cause someone not to get paid.

That's a really really strange leap in logic.

What does invading the privacy and personal life of a player have anything to do with how a player would react to criticism on their on-ice performance???

Sleuthing in a player's phone is waaay outside of a coach's jurisdiction. Giving a player harsh feedback for their performance is not.

What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room. What happens in a player's personal life stays in their personal life.

I'm sure these players have all been held accountable in travel and their junior leagues. This has nothing to do with a coach being mean to them. This has nothing to do with any on ice or off ice regiments or routines. This has nothing to do with hockey - what Babcock was supposed to be coaching them on.

This was a coach who decided to demand something he had no right to, exerting his power and facing the consequences for it. I honestly want to stop hearing any of this nonsense that he just wanted to see pictures of their family for team building and mutual understanding. If you want pictures to see, ask them to provide them at their own discretion, you don't need to touch anyone's phone. Set up a group meeting for everyone to share - don't ask unprompted behind closed doors to scroll for yourself.

The complete lack of ignorance and delusion that some posters are spewing here is insane. Why are you talking about safe spaces?

Agreed. But has that been confirmed by anybody? I’m hearing a lot of gossip and speculation but Davidson and Jarmo didn’t reveal anything on the specifics during their news conference. Maybe they were asked about it afterwards, I dunno.

Ah so you simply don't understand power dynamics and abusive behavior. Simple as.

Maybe a player thinks, "this is my first NHL coach, I have to do what he says"; he controls their future. Maybe they say no, hey get their minutes cut. Maybe they get demoted to a lower line, get no time in camp even.
You're saying no one else in that organization knows hockey? If Babcock demote a player and everybody else, including Jarmo Kekäläinen thinks that player should get more ice time, do you think it's Babcock who's in charge of that then? Of course not.

Totally fine. But you're also making a leap in logic. He asks to see a phone, the player is uncomfortable, the player gives Babs the phone. He didn't sleuth, he didn't hit a player and take the phone out of his hands. Nothing like that has been reported, right?

People are assuming everything from he hacked the phones, he stole the phones, he took photos and shared them on the internet.

He made a request that a couple of players (maybe only one!) didn't like. And that player didn't go to the team captain, the GM, a trusted friend, the hr department or his agent. He went to BizNasty.

It's a goofy story, and whatever you might think of Mike Babcock's reputation, there's absolutely nothing wrong with asking to see personal photos in order to get know the team.

The head coach has the most influence on a player's deployments.

I can't believe there are people defending this clown.

New to the game?
