Pretend for a second you weren't, and instead you were a 20-something millionaire athlete, and the 5th or 6th thing on your phone was an intimate video your wife/girlfriend sent you to tide you over through a couple of weeks of prospect tournaments and training camps... I'm sure you'd be fine with your coach checking that out before training camp even starts "to see what kind of man you are."
I would just say that I have pictures and/or videos that are of the private nature but I'm willing to show other stuff. When you're 18 and older you're suppose to have reached a level of maturity that makes you able to say no to certain things. If you haven't reached that level, like some of the Blue Jackets players haven't, you shouldn't be allowed to vote either.

Simple as.

The problem is, like the report I posted earlier here, Babcock had the phone in his hand and was going through it. The player was concerned that Babcock was going to go through his text history also. This all happened away from the arena also. It just makes the whole ordeal very suspicious.

You should try reading the reports - he took the players' phones and not only scrolled through them himself, but cast them up on a screen through his own computer.

And sure, you just tell a coach with a reputation like Mike Babcock "No" to a request like that in a one-on-one meeting. This is a coach who had such a bad reputation among players that he had to go on a PR campaign on Week One after being hired about how much he had changed and matured as a person. Because he lashes out vindictively and holds grudges like it's his purpose.

He was on thin ice from the moment he was hired, and decided to put himself in an adversarial awkward situation to several players almost immediately. Mgmt was completely right to say they don't have time for that BS and pull the plug.

Look, if these kids truly have something to hide, that's a point of concern, no?

If you’re the father of one of these player’s girlfriends, how would you feel about a creepy old man rifling through his phone? A guy like Fantilli likely dates teenage girls? Stuff that’s meant for Fantilli’s eyes only is none of Babcocks business and none of his concern.

Asking to see a picture of his family is one thing. Looking through a players phone for minutes, is another. Babcock obviously crossed that line.

Trust on a personal level and trust on a professional level are two different things. It is famously said that all the players on Montreal Canadiens hated Scotty Bowman 364 days a year, and on the 365th they got their championship rings. And Scotty Bowman is regarded as the best NHL coach of all time.

With Babcock it’s more that the players hate him 365 days a year and on the 365th day they’ve been golfing since round 1 ended.

Why would anyone trust him professionally when he hasn’t been out of the 1st round in over a decade and has gotten humiliated in every head to head coaching battle he’s been in since 2009?

Nothing to be concerned about cause nobody has the right to access that info unless personally disclosed. How is it that hard to understand?

Maybe the players have screenshots of them bad mouthing the coach in a group chat? The coach has no right to that.

Maybe a player has a pic of their genitals because they had a questionable sexual encounter and wanted a close up pic to make sure nothing was wrong? The coach has no right to that.

Maybe the player has photos/screen shots of monetary or personal legal documents? The coach has no right to that.

Maybe the player has a photo or video of a family member in medical distress? The coach has no right to that.

Maybe the player has nudes their gf/wife for when they’re sexting on the road trips? The coach has no right to that.

Maybe the player has a photo of their pet fish? The coach has no right to that.

Maybe the player has a photo of a sun set? The coach has no right to that.

I honestly think this is a nothing burger kind of thing. If they don't want to show stuff on their phones than don't, he doesn't have the ability to force you to show your phone. Do I agree with Babcock? No! That said this isn't something that should lead to anyone getting fired or resigning. People are acting like Babcock is like one of the worst people on the planet, when the biggest things he has done to date, was ask a player for a list of low effort players and ask to see phone stuff.

I wouldn't have done either of those things as a coach, but they also aren't that big of a deal as far as piece of crap people are concerned. The stuff with Franzen is not really clear what he did, and would be the bigger deal of wrong doing.
Did you miss the part where he confronted a player outside of the rink and took their phone and searched it for several minutes?

Did he take it? Like as in, ripped it out of a players hand? Because I haven't seen that reported anywhere. Only thing I have read is that he asked players for phones and they gave them to him. If he took them by force, wouldn't he be in trouble with the law, not just fired from the team?

No. That’s not how this works.

Do you think the players were free to make the decision to decline without it affecting anything at all from their perspective?

But do you think a guy who got a second chance as a coach (by the way Keefe has been worse than Babcock, as Babcock got fired just as the Leafs were hitting their stride while Keefe has a laundry list of playoff chokes) would deliberately try to do something that would get him fired right away? What do you think his intent was? Unusual as it might be, it doesn't strike me like his intent was bad at all. Does Babcock strike you as a guy who has ever really been up to par with the youth of today? It seems to me like with some princesses it was a misunderstanding, and that's about it. Why it went further just tells you how soft the NHL is today.
The Blue Jackets went through the process of hiring a coach who already had baggage attached to him. Now, before the season even starts, they're letting him go. This is a nightmare for their PR and HR departments.

Players deal with tough, abrasive, volatile, mean coaches every single year. This is nothing new. What is new is having one fired before coaching a single game.

There is clearly something different about this situation. Dismissing it with the claim the NHL is "Soft" is a pretty lousy takeaway.

Even if he didn't do anything wrong, I'd strip the C off Jenner and bring in some good locker room guys. Jenner was the C when the pld gong show happened, right?

It's not like they were going to make the playoffs.

If you see no issues with your authority figure/boss requesting your phone so that they can search and look through it then not much else to discuss here lol.
