An interesting person to read about is Scotty Bowman, who was completely despised by his players and intentionally difficult. I wouldn't be surprised if Bowman had a lot of influence on Babcock's development as that kind of coach.

Scotty Bowmann was a great coach. He got the absolute best out of his players. Probably should have his own thread. He may have been disliked - a lot of coaches are, but he wasn't a sociopath.

If you read some of the anecdotes like waiting for the school year to start before trading a player... Yes his coaching did resemble sociopathic behavior. Or at the very least, playing the role of a tyrant was a feature and not a bug in this style of coaching and managing a room of hockey players.

Ciccarelli thinks that happened to him ( his children actually). He thiks the trade was worked out a moth or so before. Whether it is true or not is unknown, but Ciccarelli thinks it is true.

Wow really? That's pretty crazy

You can be a Bowman or Steve Jobs if your behaviour leads to results, it becomes offensive when it’s a no-talent leader who gets routinely beat out by mid-tier competitors who don’t need to be a tyrant to achieve comparable or better results.

The prevailing sentiment on this topic is you can’t be a tyrant at all.

Goes without saying, I would think.

My sense is Babcock generates very complex feelings in people. Tyranny and manipulation isn’t really new in the sport or in the coaching ranks… and it’s pretty clear no one wants to work with someone like that. But he’s also made so many enemies along the way that I think he’s forfeited his chance at the Hall of Fame, retroactively ruined his legacy and disqualified whatever he once accomplished and probably ostracized himself from the hockey community.

New Spittin Chiclets podcast divulges a LOT of info about Babcock's time in Toronto.

Apparently this happened to a new incoming veteran player, Babcock plugged his phone into a TV with other people in the room and went through his pics and said something along the lines of 'I want to see what kind of guy you are'. Babcock treated him like shit all year until he called Dubas and asked for a trade since they likely couldn't can Babcock, and then another player called Dubas the same day and that's why they fired him.

Biz mentioned that there was someone on the Leafs (don't know if he specified player or staff) that was designated to tell new players that Babcock does this shit.

Ofc when the leafs get arguably their most talented young core ever, we give them this clown of a coach. Embarrassing that Shanny/ownership let this shit go on and allowed him to treat players with such disrespect.

Edit: Obviously it would be really difficult to prove, but its tough to see how this wouldnt influence the Matthews/Marners contract at all. If you gotta deal with an asshole coach for the next several years (he was signed for a long time), youre gunna want to make sure youre comped accordingly.

It actually sheds a bit of light on why negotiations went as hard as they did with the big 3. Yet they saw it as imperative they continue with this disaster of a coach all the way until the wheels came all the way off.

Makes me think the veteran player was Tyson Barrie that complained and asked for a trade.

Firing Babcock was giving up on Marner & Matthews ever growing up (and or attending gym for that matter in some cases).

Yeah Biz even said a lot of people think Babcock was fired for on ice performance but the main reason was because of how the players felt about Babock.

many of us have been saying this for years and got mocked for it. Babcock and Lou screwed us when it came to the RFA contracts. Granted Kyle still could have flexed his muscle and enforced that we shouldn't pay RFA's that much, but it's clear that there were several incidents that put Kyle in a tough spot when it came to these negotiations.

1. Marner not getting his bonuses (I can't remember if Nylander got his) but I'm pretty sure that alone cost us 2 million on AAV if we had just let them get that money on their ELC's

2. Marner being burried on the fourth line his rookie season, Nylander constantly in the dog house

3. Marner and Babcock's list

4. Matthews not getting the play time he probably deserved in the playoffs, never getting a chance to play with Marner early in his career

5. Babcock intentionally suppressing the offensive talents of the kids

6. Probably God knows how many times they complained to Lou about some of this crap
