That’s a nice pivot.

Back to the point, he oversaw the majority of this core coming to organizations.

We can’t be that petty that we can’t say thanks and job well done can we?
I thought the top picks were committee driven.

Rielly and Marner look better this year since November 18 onwards.

Um.. Marner didn’t play until Dec 4 but yes a healthy player looks better than an injured one.

As for points pace, we need to be thankful that Marner isn’t UFA this year.

Dubas would throw the league max at him.

He didnt play before Nov 18...weird.

Babcock was good but he declined.
He was either unwilling or unable to adapt.

You're right, he took us from last to playoffs. This year he was taking us from playoffs to bottom 10.

^^^^This. This is a perspective I can get behind.

He did a lot of good for us, he's had a stellar career. And now he's a bit of a dinosaur, but there are very few coaches in hockey history with a more impressive record. That's just a fact.

Actually, before he did anything else Babcock took us from 27th overall to dead last.

While true, that's a pretty short journey down compared to the journey he took back up.

And remind me - in that season he took us to dead last, were we trying to win and avoid getting Matthews in the draft? Were we??

Exactly. Every time someone says something about franchise records I just wanna puke.

And if Matthews or Marner sets a franchise record?

he is 86
as far as i know he hasnt coached for a while

but the "its okay to mentaly abuse the players because the W" narrative is pretty dangerous
imho

Franzen’s case is more complicated because as far as we know, the impact on Franzen the person was never disclosed to Babcock.

Franzen the player excelled under Babcock.

And hockey culture is not unlike the military in that it’s a tough game and the thought was it required a tough approach. Keenan. Hitchcock. Crawford. Tortorella. All former Jack Adams winners. (Jack Adams himself ironically was a spiteful and miserable SOB).

All brought up in the same school of thought. It’s not right. It’s just the way it was.

It’s wrong if it continues.

Mental Health is an issue of importance for me. I suffer from Anxiety and Depression and take medication and therapy for it.

Do you think that knowledge will change the way certain posters interact and take personal shots at me or others (at least 20% of this forum likely suffers the same thing)?

There are a lot of people in glass houses out there criticizing Babcock for his treatment of Franzen and likely mirror that in their own postings.

Irony.

Sure. I just wanted to set the record straight - this narrative that he *"took us from last" has been repeated so many times I think some people may have forgotten the facts. And he didn't take the "journey" alone, it would have been shocking if we didn't shoot up the standings after adding Matthews, Marner and Nylander to the team. He did a good job coaching those first couple of years though, no argument from me on that point.

And remind me - in that season he took us to dead last, were we trying to win and avoid getting Matthews in the draft? Were we??

I don't know what the hell we were trying to do. I do remember calling up Nylander late in the season which seems like a dumb thing to do if we're trying to lose games.

Were we trying to win this season?

Why would it be any different for them? Our franchise records, regardless of whether they're individual or team records are for the most part, thoroughly unimpressive. And even if they weren't, it's still a team game so give me the cup, that's it. And if one of our players wins the Hart or the Art Ross (or even the Rocket), I'll applaud the accomplishment but even then, if we don't have success as a team I really won't care much.

Ownership/Shanny.

Made the playoffs 3 years in a row and they liked that extra money coming in.

Babcock's contract also probably made them weary of firing him. MLSE prints money, but paying a guy $6 million a year for the next four years to NOT coach for you likely caused higher ups to balk.

Was Leivo really a loss? I always liked the guy and get that he always had NHL talent, but even with Keefe as the coach where would he even fit on our roster today? For all we know he'd still be in the press box given how deep we are at forward. People act like he's lit it up since he left TO, but he's the same player. He's 26 years old with a career high of 26 points. He played at a 30 point pace last year after getting traded to VAN and he's playing at a 43 point pace this year. He's not a top 6 player. I'm not putting him in our top 9 over Johnsson, Hyman or Mikheyev that's for sure.

But he would be handy to have around now...I just don't like that we essentially gave him away because Babcock didn't like him for some reason.
