Speculation, but there are events that make this seem very probable. After the playoffs Dubas did not say if Babcock would be back or not (likely wanted him gone but had to get approval). A week or so later, Dubas says Babcock will be returning (likely had meetings with Shanny and other stakeholders and they wanted Babcock to stay due to 3 straight playoff appearance = money). Chris Johnson has said that people in the organization loved the way the Leafs played Boston in game 5 and obviously thought Babcock was capable of getting them to play like that consistently.

Then there were a lot of cryptic tweets, likes or things said in the media by Babcock and Dubas that pointed towards them not having the same vision.

Then of course you have Keefe, who was being paid a large amount to stay with the Marlies because he has been Dubas' guy since the OHL and it was only a matter of time before he took over with the Leafs.

Feschuk at the Star straight up said in a coulmn in the offseason that Dubas tried to get a coaching change in the summer but was overruled by those higher in the org (either Shanahan or the mlse board).

Kadri had already played a season for Babcock and was playing an involved two-way game at that point. There was never a huge leap in his game after the list.

Funny enough 16/17 was Kadri's best year, and its not even close. Guy was a 2 way beast, going up against the leagues best lines and neutering them for the most part while putting up 30 goals/62 points, the testimant that he finished 2nd that year in Selke voting to Bergeron tells you all you need to know.

He never finished 2nd in Selke voting lol, why make things up? His highest finish was 20th, as in a couple 3rd place votes. His work ethic didn't change at all from 15/16 to 16/17, he just got PP time with guys that weren't Komarov and Parenteau.

Again with Kadri ,
Elvis has left the building !

To quote another Hall and Oates song

Kadri’s gone
Everybody's high on consolation
Everybody's trying to tell me what is right for me, yeah
My daddy tried to bore me with a sermon
But it's plain to see that they can't comfort me

Sorry, Charlie, for the imposition
I think I got (it got it), I got the strength to carry on, yeah
I need a drink and a quick decision
Now it's up to me, ooh, what will be

Kadri’s gone, Kadri’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I better learn how to face it
Kadri’s gone, Kadri’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I'd pay the devil to replace her
Kadri’s gone, and Kadri’s gone
Oh why, what went wrong?

Get up in the morning, look in the mirror
I'm worn as a toothbrush hanging in the stand, yeah
My face ain't looking any younger
Now I can see love's taken a toll on me

Kadri’s gone, Kadri’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I better learn how to face it
Kadri’s gone, and Kadri’s gone
Oh I, oh I
I'd pay the devil to replace her
Kadri’s gone, Kadri’s gone
Oh why, what went wrong?

Think I'll spend eternity in the city
Let the carbon and monoxide choke my thoughts away, yeah
And pretty bodies help dissolve the memories
They can never be what she was (was) to me

Does anyone remember this video? Somewhat insightful about the nature of coaching and button pushing:

I just picture Babs at home, asking one kid to make a ranked list of which family members they feel are most truthful and honourable, and then reading it out at the dinner table.
He has made his 80 million
If he coaches again it may be at the bottom of the food chain
Maybe Babcock and Peter's can get a gig in the KHL
Hopefully Siberia

Look, I like a good Kadri fight but you are really glossing over some positive stuff.

The list came during the 16-17 season which was Kadri’s best full season. He followed that up with his next best full season.

He was going through a lot of off ice issues and life changes as well. Calling it a crossroads in his life.

He credits Babcock with helping him turn it around and to this day speaks highly of him.

The List was juvenile and cruel in my opinion. But it seems to have motivated Kadri on and off the ice.

To say otherwise is a complete distortion.

MLSE should honestly sue Babcock for being a fraud and breach of contract. The guy was straight up making decisions for the sole purpose of trying to show up Dubas and his players -- anyone who disagreed with him or for that matter didn't massage his feet. I think apart from the Marner thing he was sort of doing his job the first 2-3 years, but as soon as Dubas replaced Lou, he really amped up the entitled petulant child attitude.

I know, MLSE was both silly to give him 8x6M, and can afford to eat that loss, but it still pisses me off in principle. It says a lot about his horrible character that he felt no need to live up to his end of the bargain, and prioritized his own ego over doing the job he was paid so absurdly handsomely to perform. I know I feel a bit guilty when I slack a bit at my job and then look at my paycheck, and then this mother****er got 48 million and felt no obligation to live up to it.

It's pretty much how a malignant narcissist like Babcock thinks.

When he first came to Toronto - he was fully aware of the fact that this winning-starved franchise would cling to his every word and stupid cliche.

He was able to get away with so much stupid and questionable shit with his coaching decisions while being safeguarded from the media (it blows my mind how he never got asked any hard questions).

Once everyone started to see through his bullshit it became abundantly clear how incredibly overrated he is.

Amazes me to see how untouchable Shanahan seems to be in all of this.

Pretty decorated coach, whose former player sought him out to lead a rebuild and ultimately championship.

Cancel culture is funny sometimes.

He's far from untouchable in my books - no clue who you're talking to.

Remember when Mike Commodore used to go on and on about how scummy a human being Mike Babcock was? many in the hockey community simply scoffed at him and attributed it to him being salty, it must feel nice for him to finally be validated with all the things we now know about Babcock's "methods."

To force a rookie to rank players on the team and then share the list with the team...completely bizarre and counterintuitive to building cohesion and comradery and a sure fire way to turn your players against you. Even Johan Franzen described Babcock as "He's a terrible person, the worst person I have ever met." His tactics of emotional/psychological abuse go way back.

Enough said, Leafs management did a great thing dumping him. With regards to his accomplishments, I think Canada's assistant coaches in 2010, 2014 and 2016 (Ruff, Hitchcock, Julien, Quenneville, Trotz) easily could have led Canada to gold as well and his cup win in 2008 was mainly on the back of what was a loaded HOF team.

I predict he'll never coach in the NHL again.

Babcock was as advertised. Instilling a needed work ethic and structure.

In the view of Shanahan, the best choice to implement the Shanaplan. So confident was he in his management, he made him the highest paid in the history of the NHL.

Worked well with Lou.

You may not like the guy but he didn’t change from the guy Shanahan trusted. He was exactly what he was paid to be. We can debate Shanahan's analysis of what a good coach is... his judgement or whether he is out of touch.

Lou is out. Dubas has wanted to take off the training wheels for a long time. He wanted Keefe but Shanahan said no.

Losing streak? Boom. Seized his moment to strike.

Totally support him in his direction.

But make no mistake, the spotlight is squarely on that office. Shanahan’s office will be next.

But don’t cheapen yourself by downplaying. Babcock’s experience as a no talent coach. For the minimal difference coaching makes, he’s had a storied career.

The pettiness is quite hilarious and sad.

Babcock looks stupider every day. It pisses me off to wonder what players we lost just because of his being stubborn. Leivo for one...

Was Leivo really a loss? I always liked the guy and get that he always had NHL talent, but even with Keefe as the coach where would he even fit on our roster today? For all we know he'd still be in the press box given how deep we are at forward. People act like he's lit it up since he left TO, but he's the same player. He's 26 years old with a career high of 26 points. He played at a 30 point pace last year after getting traded to VAN and he's playing at a 43 point pace this year. He's not a top 6 player. I'm not putting him in our top 9 over Johnsson, Hyman or Mikheyev that's for sure.

It can be true that some people Babcock met, responded really well to him. Kadri and Shanahan come to mind.

And it can also true that some people like Commodore had a very negative experience.

Not everyone you work with will like you. Not everyone will hate you.

If married; your spouse may adore you. But ask an ex.... and you’ll get a different story.

We are all a sum of our parts.

What a load of crap. Why do you have a need to defend Babcock? He's a proven d-bag yet you sanitize his terrible behavior with that answer. Shame on you.
