Confirmed with Link: Avs sign Jonathan Drouin (1 year, 825k)

Drouin could flame out, or this could be Nuke 2.0.

At 825k, easily worth the gamble. I think the only downside to this is, assuming Drouin does flame out, is the Avs will probably anchor him to MacKinnon's wing all season long in an attempt to force it to work.

But I have a really hard time seeing it be that bad. MacKinnon and Lehkonen gave f***ing eRod a career year, I'd put money on Drouin having a good season this year.

And talk about a guy who would be dependent on staying in Colorado if things work out. It's the Nuke situation all over again if this move hits it's mark.

I do think it's kind of funny that these two were best buddies drafted 1 OA and 3 OA in the same year. One of them is the highest paid player in the league, the other makes 825k. Talks about walking different paths. I do fully believe Montreal f***ed Drouin's development though.
Imagine seeing a guy get drafted 3OA because a guy was one of the most dominant junior wingers and going, “That’s our franchise C!” No wonder it didn’t work out lmao.

Yeah they were so desperate for a center they completely f***ed his development. Drouin definitely owns some responsibility for his career but he recieved zero help from Tampa Bay who buried him in the minors and Montreal just completely f***ed him forcing him to center. Get him on MacKinnon's wing as a support player and I would be surprised at all if he comes close to hitting 50 points again.

I'm looking at Drouin's old stats. This f***er had 108 pts in 46 games. How is that even possible? He almost doubled MacKinnon's points in half the games played.

Yeah not that Drouin didn’t play a part in the issues in Tampa, but that was clearly a relationship that neither side was helping in. Montreal really f***ed that from the start though. Like it was always going to end that way with them forcing him at C.

Drouin's biggest issue is he's always been incredibly soft in the NHL. He's allergic to contact and dirty areas... won't play through any bumps and bruises... won't battle for pucks at a high rate. That may not play well with Bednar, but it may have to with the lack of players in the top 6. If the Avs find a way to grab a top 6 winger, the odds this won't work out increase. If the Avs don't find that guy (or somebody on the wings is injured), I think Drouin will be fine-ish (he'll produce at a ~50 point rate in that role).

When you are drafted that high teams expect you to be a play driver and he clearly is not that. On a line with MacK and Moose he can just be a passenger and be fine. The work ethic concerns are worrying though but that is why he was available sub $1M.

Interesting. Maybe it is part of his reported anxiety issues. I admit it is pure speculation. But, sometimes there is a correlation between being very sensitive to pain and anxiety. The point is, he may be really apprehensive about putting himself into situations that will cause him pain. If so, he might be able to overcome it to some extent through therapy. Probably he has been through a lot of it given his identity and career depend on it. I hope he can at least partially overcome his issues with the Avs. For his own sake and the Avs.

So basically Drouin and RyJo will be a no-go combo, he needs people to go to the dirty areas and take the bruises for him. And RyJo might not be interested to do that 80% of time.

Drouin - MacK - Lehky/Nichu or Wood - Colton - Drouin are his best bets to be successful?

Only caught the end of the presser in French. He said that he stayed friend with Mack since the junior years but they never talked about hockey or moving before...it only happened in the last few days.

Yea that's 2 players that don't "play the right way". Poor effort, poor defense, avoid contact...

That's why I said in the other thread that if we were to sign Tatar on top of that it becomes dangerous for the team's DNA.

IMO the MacK line is the only line I think Drouin will really work on. No matter who is the other wing (though I think that ends up being Rants). Putting him with Wood and Colton will take away from the identity of that line greatly... and Drouin would significantly hurt their pace.

Most realistically as the season wears on, Drouin ends up on the 4th line with Meyers and whocares... then is a 2nd unit PP specialist with 6-8 minutes of 5v5 time.

They can, and likely will. Whether it works or not is a completely different story.

Personally I hope they separate MacK and Mikko for this season. Unless it's late in the game and we need a goal or two. RyJo needs Mikko and Drouin - Mack combo needs a hard worker that knows defense.

Really feel like we need a top six ish level winger for our forward group to be great. Puts people on their right spots on the line up.

I highly doubt it.

Drouin - Mack - Nuke
Lehky - RyJo - Rants

It will look like that with Nuke and Lehky being interchangeable. Then Bednar will reunite Rants and Mack if they are trailing and need a goal.
And Drouin will be on the Rants and MacK line when that happens. ;)

Temporarily yes

That being said we better hope that Nuke is back 100% (physically and mentally) because we will need him big time.
Yeah zero debate there. The Avs simply can't withstand any regression in the top 6 and really need RyJo to be a lot better... then Nuke to stay healthy and play at his best.

Ryjo has been using his body more of late. Going to the net, etc. A lot of his recent goals are around the net.

Call me crazy, but I do think Drouin, Ryjo, and Nuke would work.

Not all that different than Nuke, Kadri, and Bura. That's the line you can give soft offensive minute's to. The other two lines should be able take more difficult matchups.

Not saying it's what will happen, but a lot of stuff is going to be tried.

I think it may start off like how you posted. Makes a ton of sense to try that.
